The LCCHS Trojan football staff, in conjunction with the Trojan Gridiron Club, will host a youth football camp July 13-16 at the high school practice fields.

Maybe it just because it's a holiday, and people are busy with the 4th of July festivities. But, there just seems to be no passion for sports in this county. You would think that people would be all over this forum talking about high school football, and anything football related -- since the season is bearing down upon us.
Granted the article relates to a youth football camp, but it is being hosted by the LCCHS Coaching Staff in conjunction with the Trojan Gridiron Club. A million dollar stadium, and nobody seems to care about the football program, or any major sport for that matter. Where's the passion folks?
Perhaps, the passion you are looking for is misplaced.
I would like to see the type of passion you speak of shown to our Schools.
I would like to see the type of passion you speak of shown to our School Administrators.
I would like to see the type of passion you speak of shown to our Teachers.
I would like to see the type of passion you speak of shown to our Students that choose to excel in something other than sports.
As for the million dollar stadium, wouldn't it have been nice to divide that million dollars between the four public schools in our county, and please do not turn this into a lesson about SPLOST I understand, but money spent is still money spent.
I am not the type of person that believes there is no place for high school sports, I actually enjoy high school football BUT,,, please let us remember our priority.
It all goes hand-in-hand. They're all extensions of one another. We're now painting with a broad brush on this topic, and your point(s) are well taken... The jest of your post is that there seems to be no passion for anything school related... Perhaps!
Many times we use the computer as a shield. Some people go to blogs or online posts and say things that they would never repeat in a face to face discussion. THANK YOU for not stooping to that level. It is a pleasure to have this discussion in a civil manner. It would be a joy to have it over coffee at the Red Rooster, or maybe at half time of the first LCCHS game.
Now to my reply.
Yes, I do have passion for things school related, the word that you may have passed over was PRIORITY.
I would love to see the Trojans playing in the dome this year but I would also like to see kids focus on what school is here for.
That is where our community passion must grow. We must praise our kids not only for scoring touchdowns and intercepting passes but also for completing homework assignments, maintaing classroom order, and passing exams.
You are correct when you say I am painting with a broad brush. I do think that our priorities must be brought back in line.
Academics build the foundations for developing life's skills. On the other hand, so does athletics. They complement each other extremely well. Or, at least they should... We can be highly educated, but if we don't possess the skills that are learned and taught through athletics in terms of teamwork, communication, sacrifice, commitment, & striving for excellence -- then we will not be well-rounded in our educational, vocational, & professional pursuits. Sports teams really mirror life's pursuits of being successful in one's chosen field. Individuality becomes secondary in a team scenario, as the team is normally as strong as its weakest link. It's all relative to succeeding, and they should all be given priority at the end of the day.
Well, that may be the case. But, winning will solve a lot of those problems. It -- winning -- just has to be done consistently. A winning tradition has to be established and maintained in order to change the mindset -- and, to remove the apathy.
The facilities are -- now -- second to none. Winning consistently has to be established at the rec ball and middle school levels. Winning is not just a part time job. It's a full time job. You will get what you expect... A self-fulfilling prophesy, if you will...
Expect to lose, and you will... Winning comes with a price. The question is whether the coaches, fans, & players are willing to pay it?
I care about our football team, I think a lot of people do.The million dollar stadium was a big need in this town, because, that old field, did not belong to us, it was Gordon field.
Plus, it was off of campus. There's just something to be said for having the venue on campus. Stadiums are arenas that should be protected by their gladiators on the 'home turf'. Football was being played on a borrowed field -- a contractual agreement, I believe... Baseball used to be played at the rec dept., of all places. One year it was played on the Gordon College baseball field. We've come a long way, baby. Just gotta' learn how to win consistently to get rid of the apathy that pervades this Co., when it comes to all things sports-related...
No...it belonged to the school system until the land swapping to get site of new stadium. Now, it owned by the city. It hasn't been owned by Gordon for a while.
Thanks for clearing that up. Nevertheless, a stadium off of campus just doesn't have the same feel to it. Bad karma, imo. It's like fishing in somebody else's pond.
I am pleased to see that the new people care about the future of Lamar County. Hats off to Dr. Truby, Coach Scandrett, Mr. Austin, Coach Strickland, the coaching staff and the board of education. I have been here my entire life, except when I was in college. I can't recall Lamar County every offering camps to help the kids to become better. Please continue to do things like this. You all have offered baseball camp, softball camp and next week a football camp. I hope you all will add a basketball camp next summber. You guys keep up the great work. Keep the camps going please?
The camp is going well. Today retired pro football player C.L. "Shep" Shepard spoke to the youth. He told them to be sharp- meaning come to practice or class on time and ready to work, be focus-pay attention when coaches, teachers and parents are giving them instruction, believe in themselves and be respectful of their parents, coaches and teachers. The future trojans looked and sounded like they were having a ball. The coaches even looked and sounded like they were having a ball also. The coaches are doing a great job. I not sure how many of the live here in the county, but when you see them give them some words of encouragement. God bless Lamar County football on all levels.
