The Lamar Co. Trojans Summer Baseball Team is in the process of winding down what has been an extremely busy summer.
The month of June has seen the Trojans play in three invitational tournaments, including their own
Bringin' The Heat Summer Tournament that just concluded on Saturday at Aldora Field.
Next on the agenda is a team camp at Berry College in Rome, Ga. where the Trojan Players will receive individual instruction from the Berry College Coaches in the mornings, and then play games in the afternoons against other teams participating in the camp. The Trojan players and their coaches will be housed in the Berry College dormitories, fed in the college's cafeteria, and have access to the college's recreational facilities during their 'off-times'.
This will be the 2nd consecutive year that the team has attended Berry College's Baseball Camp that is directed by Berry College's Head Baseball Coach, David Beasley, and his assistant coaches.
Going into this week's camp at Berry, the Trojans have a summer record of 14-3-1.
The Trojans have participated in invitational tournaments at Mary Persons, Crisp Co.,and Barnesville. In the just recently concluded 'Bringin' The Heat Summer Tournament at Aldora Field, the Trojans went undefeated in their pool play with wins over Jackson, Monticello, Marion Co., and Paideia to advance to the championship game against Schley Co. Schley Co. won their pool play at Mary Persons in the other half of the tournament bracket. The 14-team tournament consisted of teams from Lamar Co., Marion Co., Paideia, Jackson, Stockbridge, Monticello, Spalding Co., Mary Persons, Upson-Lee, Schley Co., Henry Co. Woodland, Macon Co., Crisp Co., & Howard. Crisp Co. and Spalding Co. dropped out of the tournament, after some early games, for varying reasons. And then forfeited the remainder of their scheduled games.
In the championship game on Saturday against Schley Co., the Trojans being the home team, led 6-3 with 2-outs in the top-half of the 7th inning, and only needed one-out to win the tournament championship.
An infield error on a ground ball extended the inning and allowed the Wildcats of Schley Co. to tie the game at '6-all' to send the game into extra innings.
At the end of the day, the Trojans finished as runner-ups in the tournament, as Schley Co. ended-up defeating the Trojans by a 9-6 score. Some side notes on the tournament was the great job that the Trojans Dugout Club did in putting on the tournament. The concessions were outstanding which included daily specials like scrambled-burgers, taco salads, chicken fingers & fries, homemade peach ice cream, & sweet iced-tea. And, to quench the thirsts of the players, coaches, umpires and fans, there was plenty of Power-Aids available, too.
Not by accident, however, but the tournament's moniker -- Bringin' The Heat -- could never have been more accurate, as the temperatures were sweltering, and soared well into the mid-to-upper 90's.
After the Trojans return from a full week of instruction and games at the Berry College Camp, they will have finished the summer baseball program. Then will come a well-deserved rest for all of the players and coaches before school starts back in late July.
I would suggest that you get somebody that is affiliated with the rec. program to cover the activities of the tournament at the Rec. Dept., and email them to the folks at the H-G. I feel certain that they would give you equal time.
It is very important that the kids get coverage even down at the rec. league, because it allows them to get some credit, too, while stimulating interest in youth baseball in the Lamar Co. Community. Hopefully, a win-win situation for all that are involved...
At any rate, I do not cover sports. Trust me, you don't want me to. I know nothing about them and was recently chastised for calling a golf club a 'stick.'
I typically post in the sports section (note: POST) what is sent in by our readers and by those who participate in such events.
I cordially invite you to email in any information you may have regarding said Parks & Rec tournament. I will be happy to publish.
It sure wouldn't do any harm when playoffs return next spring.
Other teams like the private schools, for example, that learn about the tournaments can request participation and pay their entry fees, if there are slots available at the time of their requests. See Paideia...
But, back to your observation about playing the private schools... I'm not sure whether that would be an advantage one way, or the other, as long as the quality of the teams already scheduled for the tournaments is good. If you will look at the list of the 14 teams that actually participated in the local tournament, there were quite a few of them that were AAA, or above. Lamar Co. plays in the AA Classification.
Also, in the Mary Persons & Crisp Co. tournaments there were teams from the AAA & AAAA classifications -- so, the quality of the competition that the Trojans faced this summer was very good. And, they held their own as the 14-3-1 record would indicate... However, your point is well-taken...
The most important thing is winning a region championship, which most real baseball fans in the area knows has to go through Pike Co. -- a program that never rebuilds, but just reloads each season.
