Lamar County voters go to the polls today to cast ballots in the general primary runoff. Polling places throughout the county will be open from 7 a.m. - 7 p.m.
The only race on local ballots is that for the Republican nomination in the District 3, U.S House race. Mike Crane and Steve Ferguson are vying for the GOP nod. The winner will face Democrat Angela Pendley Nov. 8.
There were 264 Lamar countians who cast advance ballots with 62 absentee ballots mailed out of which 41 had been returned.

The Lamar County Trojans will host an intrasquad scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 6 at 6 p.m. at Trojan Field. Admission is $5.
There will be bounce houses and snow cones for the kids and the booster club will operate a full concession stand. After the game, recreation players will have the opportunity to play flag football under the lights on the Trojan Field turf.
South Atlanta H.S. will be here for a scrimmage Aug. 12. Monticello will come to town for a second scrimmage Aug. 16. Both those events start at 7 p.m., also at Trojan Field.

Lamar County schools will open at the end of July with school starting Friday, July 29.
Students and parents will meet with teachers and find their way to new classrooms during Open House Wednesday, July 27 from 2-6 p.m. at all schools. The school’s 2016-17 calendar will include 180 days of instruction with 10 professional days for teachers and administrative staff.

Advance voting in the July 26 general primary runoff comes to an end Friday. Ballots may be cast daily at the elections office in the administrative office on Thomaston Street.

Elections supervisor Anita Reid reported Monday 118 Lamar countians have cast advance ballots thus far. Her office has mailed out 60 absentee ballots of which 38 have been returned.
At their July 19 meeting, the Lamar County Board of Education approved a revised dress code presented in the 2016 LCMS/ LCHS handbook.
With this new revision students will not be required to wear shirts with collars, but will still be required to follow dress code stipulations that reflect concepts of modesty and school spirit. A dress code must still be enforced to enhance the safety of the school’s students.

After responding to a domestic situation on Concord Road, Pike County deputies faced a suspect with an assault rifle in his hands Tuesday night. The suspect ran his vehicle into a patrol car and refused to follow deputies' instructions. The suspect has been identified as Dakota Caldwell, a white 24-year-old male.
The deputies were called out to a domestic situation around 11:21 p.m. and were informed that one individual involved in the dispute had left the scene in his vehicle. It was reported that he was armed with a firearm.

Players and coaches from the 6U coach pitch softball team from the Lamar County Recreation Department were honored with a proclamation by the county commission at its meeting Tuesday night for their historic season.
The team won the state title and will play in the World Series later this month in Perry. This is the first World Series team in county history, according to chairman Charles Glass.
