Former Monticello mayor Susan Dykes Holmes has announced her candidacy for the District 125 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives now held by Jim Cole. Cole is expected to be appointed Secretary of State by Gov. Sonny Perdue on Monday.

UPDATE: Nearly 24 hours after The Herald-Gazette and The Pike County Journal-Reporter first broke this story, the Georgia Department of Corrections has finally confirmed that Leeland Mark Braley hung himself in his cell on death row. He was found dead at 5:12 a.m. New Years Day.

Our sister publication, The Journal-Reporter, learned Friday via anonymous sources at the Georgia Diagnostic Prison in Butts County that convicted killer Leeland Mark Braley committed suicide by hanging himself on death row overnight Dec. 31 - Jan. 1.

Rudy B. Knight, for years a fixture at the Lamar County Jail where he worked as a jailer and dispatcher, died early New Years Day at his home. He was commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was also a Master Mason and past master of Pinta Lodge #88 F&AM here.

State representative Jim Cole will be appointed Secretary of State, according to the AJC.

Cole currently represents northeast Lamar County. He is Gov.Sonny Perdue's floor leader in the state house of representatives. A special election will be held at some point to fill his unexpired house term which ends one year from today. [Full Story »]

Henry Wisebram died at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 27 in Atlanta. Funeral services will be held graveside at Greenwood Cemetery in Atlanta at 2 p.m. today - Tuesday, December 29.

Wisebram was a second generation Barnesville businessman. The family department store, Wisebram's, anchored the downtown Barnesville business district for decades having been founded by Henry Wisebram's father, Elijah, in 1919.

Joshua Henry Wisebram, 86, a native of Barnesville, recently residing in Atlanta, died December 27, 2009. He is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Jeanne Wisebram; daughter Dr. Diane Wisebram and her husband Edward “Doc” Jewell; son Steve Wisebram and his wife Woodie Wisebram; grandchildren Witt Wisebram and Harden Wisebram, all of Atlanta; and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Former Pike countian, acclaimed musician and Athens music scene veteran Vic Chesnutt, who died Christmas Day there, will be buried here at private services.

Chesnutt recorded and collaborated with groups such as REM and Widespread Panic. He recorded 15 albums of his own music. His obituary made the New York Times. [Full Story »]
