The LCCHS Class of 2013, 155 seniors strong, will receive diplomas in graduation exercises set for Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

After colors are posted by the JROTC, multiple class members will have roles in the commencement. Kaylee McCormick will sing the National Anthem while STAR student Kendall Little will deliver the welcome. [Full Story »]

Piedmont Green Power, which came on line May 1, is not proving to be a good neighbor, at least in the eyes of 24 people who signed a petition asking Barnesville city council to do something about the 60 decibel-plus noise they can hear from the plant.

Kiwanis luau fundraiser is Friday

The Barnesville Kiwanis Club is hosting its annual reverse raffle Friday, May 17, at 7 p.m. at the Barnesville Civic Center. The party this year will be a Hawaiian style luau.

Tickets for the 21 and over event are $100 per couple and includes an all you can eat cookout catered buy Ooo La La Catering, an open bar and entertainment. There will be major prizes with every 15th ticket pulled and a grand prize of $5,000 cash. All proceeds will benefit the Barnesville Kiwanis Club.

A benefit ride for leukemia patient Jarhya Ussery will be held Saturday, May 18, just one week after Relay for Life. Jarhya, 3, had a stem cell transplant designed to replace her bone marrow and is receiving treatment at Egleston’s Children’s Hospital of Atlanta.

Money raised at the benefit will help offset medical expenses. Jarhya is the daughter of Chartiaes Jones of Culloden and the granddaughter of Ira Jones Jr. and Betty Jones. She has a brother, Rogers Wooten III, 2. [Full Story »]

Relay for Life: 'Tooning out Cancer'

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life will be held on Saturday, May 11, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Lamar recreation department track. The survivors’ banquet is from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, May 9, at Slices.

“So far 30 survivors have confirmed participation,” said chairman Tracey Muise. “We typically have around 100 survivors walking.” [Full Story »]

UPDATE: Monroe County deputies searching for a late model, red Chevy S-10 or Ford Ranger pickup in connection with a double homicide in the vicinity of Pearidge and Woods roads found the suspect car late Tuesday evening but did not find a suspect. Lamar County High School junior Lawrence Austin has won the Class AA 300 meter hurdles state championship at the Georgia Olympics in Jefferson. Austin's time, 38.60 seconds, was second best of the seven classifications in the event. The Trojans scored 45 team points at the meet to finish fifth in AA.
