Water audit is ‘clean bill of health’

The Lamar County water authority got a clean bill of health on its 2008 audit at its June 23 meeting.

"We're in a pretty good financial situation," said auditor Tom Melvin. General manager "Amberly (Ferris) is doing a really good job down here."

Dear Editor:

Due to the recent bank bailouts and the stimulus package, the average American taxpayer has become politically active in a way no one could have anticipated.

Most taxpayers are completely fed up with all political parties and are holding tea parties across the nation as a way to protest our elected officials catering to special interest groups, big banks and corporations instead of listening to us, their constituents. [Full Story »]

Authorities probing Caldwell Bridge Rd. killing

Pike County deputies and other authorities are investigating an apparent home invasion at 560 Caldwell Bridge Rd. near Concord July 1 in which a man was reportedly shot to death and his wife savagely beaten.

Pike County coroner Terrell Moody identified the dead man as 60-year-old Jimmie (Buzz) Burousas Jr., son of former Lamar County chief magistrate Jimmie Burousas Sr.

Roberts recuperating at home

Susan Lowe Roberts is recuperating at home after surgery to remove a cancerous breast tumor. She has undergone several months of chemotherapy and expects to continue with more treatments as well as additional radiation treatments later this month. [Full Story »]

Teens or adults caught sexting are facing stiffer penalties than ever before. In Georgia, anyone with a nude cell phone photo of a person under age 16 can face felony child molestation charges, which would mark them as a sex offender for life.

It is heartbreaking to see so many pets (well fed, well taken care of) being found - some abandoned and some just wandering.

Buddy Lanier has been an athlete all his life. He recently started the job of his dreams, director of the Lamar County recreation department. He directed the Barnesville Civic Center from the time it opened 12 years ago until just a few weeks ago when he was hired as director of Lamar County parks and recreation. [Full Story »]
