Empty Stocking Fund work underway

Empty Stocking Fund organizers held face-to-face interviews with applicants Saturday, Nov. 10 at Lamar County Activity Center and approved the 150 children they feel the charity can afford to provide Christmas gifts for this year.

“We had a great weekend,” said organizer Vicki Forsyth. “I was told people got there about 6:30 a.m. to get in line. When we arrived there were about 30 or so people in line. All the applicants were very nice and respectful, waiting patiently for their face-toface interview.”

Brad White posted a resounding victory in the race for sheriff. Capturing 62 percent of the votes cast in the three-man race, there will not be a runoff.

Van Baker was elected with 71 percent of the vote in the district three commission race.

Plenty of hugs, many tears and an abundance of patriotism filled the Barnesville Civic Center last week when 58 World War II veterans and spouses were honored by the Barnesville Rotary Club.

SIDE NOTE: Junior Hamrick, commander of the local VFW Club, reports Veterans Day will be observed in Barnesville on November 12 in that November 11 falls on a Sunday this year. Gordon State College Student Government Association Senator Charisma Cowan helps Barnesville youngsters Norman Durham, Zrnya Watts and Derrious Watts carve a pumpkin.

Each month the Gordon State College SGA participates in a community service project. This month, in keeping with the Halloween theme, the 25 SGA members provided small pumpkins for the children to decorate and take home and also assisted in carving several large pumpkins. The children gathered at the pavilion at the Ed Taylor Memorial Complex on Gordon Road. [Full Story »]

The Lamar County Trojans play host to the Bleckley County Royals in a key region battle Friday night at Trojan Field. Georgia High School Football Daily lists the game as number one among the state's most important games for the week. It also has Lamar as a nine-point favorite.

Ken Green's analysis follows:

Lamar County hosts Bleckley County this week with sole possession of first place in Region 4-AA on the line. The Trojans are 6-0-1 for the season while the Royals are 6-1. Both teams are 4-0 in region play. [Full Story »]
