Throughout history, great nations have faced great challenges. America, the greatest nation of all, has faced many of the greatest challenges of all – the American Revolution, World War I, World War II, the Cold War, the War on Terror, and many others. In each instance, America attempted to avoid conflict through diplomacy, conciliation, and occasionally even appeasement. However, when those efforts failed, and push came to shove, America took a deep breath, drew a line in the sand, and said to her enemies, “Cross this line and you will pay.” And pay they did. Objectivity – it is the absolute bedrock of science. There is no notion, idea, hypothesis, concept, principle, axiom, maxim, theory, or law more fundamental to science than objectivity. In fact, in the absence of objectivity, science does not exist. Call it what you want, but it ain’t science.

So what happens when scientists in general lose their objectivity? They become anything but scientists – beach bums, flower children, Birkenstock-wearing granola munchers, bearded recluses in self-imposed exile from the outside world. A sad thing indeed. [Full Story »] 

Hunt Slade, owner of Safehouse in Griffin which burned in downtown Griffin Monday night, offered these words of comfort:
To all of our friends and family that share in the loss of our beloved shop this evening to fire - thank you all so much for your support and encouragement. The worst site tonight was not the flames breaking through the roof of the building or the smashed in windows; it was the distraught look on the faces of those that have come to know each other within its walls. Well, before I collapse into bed I want to tell you this - Safehouse is not a building and it is not a person. Safehouse is a community of people who believe in something better for their lives and their town. So hug each other and be thankful that we can all see one another tomorrow. This fire claimed wood and metal but took no lives - not a single person was injured and so we go on. We will rebuild. We will start over with all of the experience we have gained and all of the powerful heartfelt relationships we have grown and we will all be stronger for it. Make something that counts and share it with someone - we did and not even a raging fire could destroy that. I am grateful for you all. [Full Story »] 

Last week’s epistle on copper thieves, the damage they do, the question of whether the current prescribed punishment fits their crimes and placing some of that punishment burden on the backs of scrap dealers who buy stolen metal drew a vast, varied reaction. [Full Story »]

In June of 1976, I was Ron Paul’s speechwriter. Shortly after I joined his staff as his newsletter writer and economic analyst, I recommended that he do what I had been doing for a year: buy a Code-A-Phone telephone answering machine and make a weekly 3-minute recording for people in his districts to call. He could send the tape to his office in the district, where the machine would be set up at a local phone number. Residents could call it for free. He thought this was a good idea. So began his weekly speeches.

My window is different than all the others along the pedestrian bridge that links the Medical Center of Central Georgia with the parking deck across Hemlock Street.

The glassed in walkway is three stories off the ground and all but one window pane is tinted. My window has a clear pane. I figure the original glass was broken at some point and replaced before the tinted glass could be matched. [Full Story »]
