Would collection of sales tax at point of sale be a solution?

Teacher furloughs are bad for Georgia’s students, but with the current economic woes you may think there is no choice. Think again. Last session, DuBose Porter (D-Dublin), and candidate for governor in 2010, co-sponsored HB 356, which allows for the collection of sales tax at the point of sale. Thus allowing local governments to collect their own, as well as the state's sales taxes, instead of the Department of Revenue. Had this bill been allowed out of committee by the Republican leadership it would have brought in an additional 1 billion dollars in revenue without raising taxes or fees. It was not like this was an experimental or untried idea. Alabama has already passed a similar bill which, when implemented, brought them an additional 1 billion dollars without raising taxes.

I believe this is what Monroe Academy was trying to do before it closed. They had a few meetings and it sounded like a great idea.

I know the teachers aren't to happy about the furlow days, but somethings got to be done. If its that bad they can quit and go find a better job. I'm sure someone else can fill their spot right quick.

This is a great example of politicians refusing to relinquishing power for the good of its people. Those who can control the revenue have the power. Just think a billion dollars along with additional revenue as a result of better transparency and it looks so simple to do. Georgia, it’s pretty bad when Alabama can so something so simple and we can’t even get it out of committee. Right wingers, you can’t blame this on the Dems or Obama.

Dubose Porter was wrong. I don't vote Dubose Porter. We don't need Obama. I vote Karen Handel or John Oxendine?

The reason that something has to be done quickly now is that Governor Sonny and his band of merry men have done nothing to deal with Georgia's economic situation for the past 7 years. Furloughs and across the board cuts are as Representative Porter says easy and unimaginative ways to put a band aid on the problem, rather than addressing it in long term ways. We have witnessed an unprecedented erosion of local autonomy and legislative power under Perdue. The result has been a decline in the quality of life for all Georgians. No water for Atlanta in 3 years;four days school weeks; substandard education in K-12; and the dismantling of a University System that was rising to national prominence. What is worse, they have done this and are raising taxes too. Representative Knight is using "double-speak" when he claims that the fact that my property taxes will be $200-$300 is not a tax increase. It is exactly that.

It is past time to throw the bums out.

How long should a bill like this last, before it dies, a natural death, and is no longer enforced? One of the problems, Georgia and other states have is there is no sunset provision on any revenue collecting law. I feel there should be, simply because times, economies, and demographics of population change, plus other factors.
I feel all legislators should be asked to be sure there is a sunset bill on most all laws made.

Yes, after gutting the University System and public education during his terms, Governor Perdue can take credit for the next decade's decline. I wonder if the financial improprieties in the Department of Transportation exist elsewhere? I would not be surprised.

Tea party weekends. Hurt economy, health care, school and so many. Bring our Gadsden flag, America flag, Bravehart, George Washington, Moses and the ten. And Protest. Freedom. Saving freedom. No more bailout. No more tax. No change. Stop credit card. Stop Obama. Obama took 7 months to mess up.

This trouble has nothing to do with Obama specifically. The Democrats and Republicans have been working at getting us in the spot for years now. What Obama has shown is no matter who we elect it will always be the same. It doesn't matter what color or party, they all work for themselves.

If you think the tax issue killed by Republicans is bad, write the two Georgia Republicans about the illegal aliens we are supporting. Try, as I have, to get someone to do something about the illegals who work under false SS numbers, get paid $12 or more an hour, claim to have so many dependents the get earned income tax credit (they get cash back they never paid in), they also get free health care when out poor working class people who pay taxes do not. We even hire special teachers for their children, something we never did for Asians, Indians, Poles, Germans, or anyone else.

We used to ask what skills people brought to our land and require them to learn English, and now we are all learning Spanish. Tea parties are a joke. Our leaders are skilled at slandering the other team and shifting blame while they all ruin what once was the greatest nation ever.

We do exactly what they want to keep them in power.

It really didn't take Obama seven months to mess up. His campaign was messed up, but people were so infatuated with having a first black president, no-one really listened to the things he was saying. The first big mess up was done by the Americans when they elected him. In listening to the news recently, I learned that Obama's green czar is a self-proclaimed communist who has served time -- I knew for a fact that we really, really messed up. These czars answer only to Obama. Before I am attacked - his skin color does not bother me, but his many associations with radicals and marxists does. He is actually telling us what he wants -- we just are not hearing it right until it is too late.

I don't kknow why you say tea parties are a joke. Illegal immigration is one of the things we are speaking out against as well as cap and trade and healthcare. It doesn't matter to me if you are a democrat or a republican. It's time for all politicians to be held accountable and listen to the people of the USA for a change and stop focusing on what they want for themselves. It is our way of being heard, and if Washington says they pay no attention to the tea party goers, I really don't believe them.
