The old Wisebram’s Department Store building on Main Street in downtown Barnesville is under renovation and will be the location of a new Slices Pizzeria.

Isn't there already a locally owned pizza joint and a nationally known pizza place in Barnesville??? Is there really a market for 3 pizza places?
Come on, give us a nice pub, tavern, or public house that serves tastful beer, has a nice decor, resonable priced with some healthy food, and is family friendly. Need ideas? Check out the Brick Store Pub. www.brickstorepub.com This is what Barnesville needs.
I wish them a wonderful and profitable business but really don't think another pizza place in little ol Barnesville is really such a good idea. This is just my personal opinion though.
From what I've heard from a source, there will be no other place in Lamar county like the Slices downtown. Good food, good atmosphere, good service, low prices, family friendly- a complete package. I look forward to the dining experience!
Welcome to town Slices!!!
It will make it if it's good food. American Pie has gotten a little old and won't even accept a debit card. Last time I was at Pizza Hut the whole staff was standing right outside the door smoking. I don't know about you but I didn't like the looks of that. Haven't been back since.
I agree...three pizzerias in Barnesville is a bit much. I do believe, however, that with this one selling beer that it might be bit more successfull than American Pie. I personally love American Pie, but the truth is..."God is great, beer is good, and people are crazy"
what is the word on the new hot dog place out on college drive? i think it's called big daddy's or the dog house or something like that. when will it open? nothing like a good hot dog. i was sorry to see the little dog place on main street not make it.
Great will try it when I come to town at Buggy Days ... Be sure to have clean staff and enough for that weekend.. Looking forward to coming to town that weekend.
I agree. I went once and told them there bathroom smelled awful and needed to be cleaned. I mean you could tell it was from nastiness and not a freshly disposed dodo (lol) Any ways the woman looked at me funny and said "it's not suppose to smell like Roses"
I spoke my mind and left with-out ordering, and then had my son (2 year old) relieve himself outside. That is how nasty the bathroom was!
I have not been back and will not.
I use to like American Pie at first, but they have gotten sloppy and hasn't been fixing them with as much sauce or something.
So you mean to tell me that to combat filth and poor public hygiene you had your son urinate just outdoors of a restaurant? I am sorry but I am not sure that is the best lesson to teach a 2-year old.
It was on a tree, he was just pottied trained and had to go tee-tee. It was better then that bathroom! He could not hold it any longer! He was hidden from anyone view.
Three pizza restaurants within a half mile of each other is a bit much. Why do some people think that in order for a restaurant to be successful you have to sell booze? McDonald's and Chick Filet have done very well without alcohol. I ordered an Italian sausage sub at Slices last year and it was made with soybean. It was nasty. Needless to say, I did not return and nor would I ever enter the one they plan to open in Barnesville.
This sounds great. Pizza Hut is disgusting and the wait time there is awful. What makes the wait time even worse is when you see the employees standing around in the back and out front smoking. American Pie has always been good but I stopped going now that they dont take debit/credit cards. I never carry cash and America Pie isnt worth the trouble of going to get cash money. So looking forward to Slices. Is this the same people that own the one in Griffin?
I am sorry you had a bad experience at Slices last year. I am not sure how you knew the sub was made of soybean unless you asked a knowledgeable person in the restaurant (manager and/or owner). To my knowledge it doesn't say on a Slices menu that any product is made of soy.
I am also confused as to why you feel people think that in order for a restaurant to be successful they find it necessary to have booze. When responsibility is at work a beer or a glass of wine is nothing more than a beverage like any other. Slices does not advertise that they are a bar and grille or that they will be doing late night drink fests.
My suggestion would be to try the Slices here in B'ville when it opens to form an opinion of it rather than an experience you had in another location at another time.
Why would you paint a mural of downtown when you can look out the window and see it? I get the Barnesville theme, but enough already. Why not do something a little more creative instead...perhaps something we don't normally see in Barnesville?
Well, if it's anything like the Slices in Griffin, I'll save my nickles. The pizza there is terrible and the manager is a jerk. I've been 3 time b/c my kids like the balcony, but the last time was just that...the last time. If it's the same as the one in Griffin, the pizza nor the prices are as good as the two places we already have in town. Barnesville needs another pizza place like it needs another dollar store.
If you think about it, a toddler taking a tinkle isn't any worse than any of these stray dogs and cats hiking it up and piling it up all over the place. At least most humans aren't carrying worms.
Ever had a hamburger in a public school lunchroom? I'm a fan of school lunches but there isn't any denying there is a difference between some nice Angus and a soybean burger. IMHO
IDK why everyone is shocked over 3 pizza places in B'ville. we have 3 BBQ places... and had several chicken places. Maybe it will be good maybe not but at least it gives us an option. I do agree that it would be nice for something different but anything is welcomed.
I predict Slices will put American Pie out of business. I've tried American Pie several times, and only once did I enjoy my meal when I ordered the betty salad. Every time I've ordered pizza, I've been dissappointed.
Well, I certainly have not graced the doors of the Pizza Hut since I was a kid. American Pie's decor does not really appeal to me and the toppings in my opinion are tiny.
If slices puts out a product with mixed greens and spinach salads instead of iceberg lettuce, offers a choice of whole wheat crust and a variety of sauces, decorates with art work and provides an atmosphere that looks like an old english pub and not a sports bar I will be super excited.
I hope the owners read this and hit on at least a couple of things I have mentioned...um like real greens instead of iceberg and no sports bar decor. The decor of the Slices in Griffin is better than most places locally but I would like to see something a little more classic.
That makes sense being that it is a pizza joint. But...if you take a look at the atmosphere of the Slices in Griffin, it wouldn't really go. I think Slices is supposed to be a "hometown" kind of place that is cool to hang out at, rather than a fancy Italian place. Whatever they do with the decor, I hope its more creative than random pics of kids on dirtbikes and TVs playing CMT all the time...
Andrew; I am Italian and I know the difference between real Italian saugage and soybean. It doesn't take a genius to taste the difference. If you want to get a buzz on at lunch, go ahead. I prefer a diet coke. It doesn't kill brain cells.
So when is it scheduled to open for business? Perhaps the weekend before instead of during the Buggy Days drama downtown when all of the local organizations have food booths trying to make money for their causes? Just throwing that out there ...
I agree about the Pizza Hut. Last time I was there is was terrible for service and cleanliness. The employees were all standing around talking trash and cared less about customers. I'll never go back.
I don't see how Barnesville expects to support three Pizza places. Most of the time Pizza Hut and American Pie are empty. Pizza is like a once a month food for me. I'd bet for others too.
CMT on the TV's is a killer for me too. Especially when it is on two different channels. I've always found the food OK at American Pie but the TV's so annoying I want to leave.
We have some strange people around here, letting kids pee outside and choosing restaurants by the booze they sell. My kids were raised to pee in bathrooms and flush toilets and alcohol isn't food.
I am excited about any new business coming to Barnesville. However, I would like to somewhat defend Pizza Hut.
I know for a fact that the Pizza Hut of the past will be no more. They have done away with just about everyone and they have a new manager. Complete overhaul. So, hopefully we can now enjoy pizza from there as well as Slices.
Yea, I guess I should have told him to tee tee in pants.... What should I have done Mom of the year, the bathroom was nasty, he couldn't hold it any longer. He was just pottied trained right before that happened .My kids do go to the bathroom and flush the toilets, our bathrooms are clean and don't smell of urine soaked toilet paper and your shoes don't stick to the floor when you are walking across it.
Here is my second thought on the issue. It really isn't that big of a deal. Sometimes you just have to go and we are talking about a 2-year old. I am sure that you told him this is only because it was an emergency and you have since taught him proper hygiene. No harm, no foul. That's what I say.
i think barnesville needs a CCs pizza. That would shut down all of them. Pizza hut is aweful and shouldnt be up and running right now. The service is horrible with the exception of one or two people that work there.
...oh right...I forgot that having a beer with a slice of pizza will kill brain cells and cause people to run amock among the streets of Barnesville and kill everything in sight...and Barnesville's crime rate will soar!!!!...much worse than if we got a rail system in town!
We need something besides BBQ or Pizza places. Something with salads and healthy non-greasy foods that is a little more removed from caveman style meat on a greasy stick over wood flames. A place that serves real clean fresh fish from reliable sources, not Chinese Tilapia grown in sewer pits.
An american style restuarant would be nice, pizza, bbq, chicken and fast food is old. The diners around town are low quality and greasy spoon joints. Just a nice restuarant would be awesome.
I'm just looking forward to another Friday night food choice, I plan to hold my judgement until I have eaten there at least twice.
And I love a beer with my Friday night meal, and manage to keep my dignity intact so nobody needs to worry about me running amok.
You'e right....The new owner has worked for the Griffin Slices as waitress and manager. She also brings many years experience to this
endevor. The owners, Debra and Bill Adamson are dedicated to a clean and comfortable place for college students, business people and families. They are working hard to bring a positive and enjoyable eating experience to us all. And the food ain't bad either!
Our sausgae is not made with soybean.. it is italian rope sausage

My husband and I have are working hard to making the new Slices a great FAMILY place to come and dine. We have Pizza, yes, but we also have Spring Mixed salads (not iceberg), Great sandwiches (not made from soybean) and Pasta Dishes. It is not our intention in putting any one out of business. We just want to add something else to the community. I have worked at the Griffin Location for a while now and intend on making Slices the best place to bring families and friends, in town.. Look forward to hearing more..
We are so excited and we appreciate all your comments ON EVERYTHING...
Although I don't like American Pie's food. I do like the fact that they have chosen to use local sports as their decorating theme. It is nice to see the local teams and players' jerseys hanging on the wall. I think American Pie has been geared toward the high school crowd, and they used to support the local teams. I guess they still do.
My family ate lunch at Slices in Griffin a couple months ago and the food was good. The pizza slices were huge, and the sauce and topping options were plenty. All in all, I thought it was much better than American Pie and Pizza Hut, but not quite as good as Mellow Mushroom. However, it was much less expensive than Mellow Mushroom.

How did slices get a pouring license when the law states you must be within 300' of a church...hum...I guess it helps having a city council person own the building...I believe I will check with zoning on this.
I wonder what the methodist church thinks about a new restaurant being able to brake the state law by serving alcohol or rather getting an alcohol license within limits of a place of worship.A family oriented restaurant does not traditionally serve alcohol. If we allow this to happen what will be NEXT for the community,a SHOW BAR?
I am not sure what state laws you are referring to. According to Georgia Alcohol & Tobacco Division all alcohol/restaurant limits are subject to local option. There are currently no state mandates on restaurants serving alcohol.
To get a beer, liquor or other alcohol license in Georgia, or to get a lottery license, is to become familiar with a dizzying variety of local regulations and requirements. While the state creates a process for considering and granting licenses to sell beer, wine or liquor, the details of who can sell what where is largely left to local governments, which vary a great deal in their ordinances and regulations.
Perhaps in the eyes of our local officials Slices was a sound business decision to generate income in the downtown business district as well as bring about more food options.
Is your argument with there be a restaurant that serves beer within the alleged 300 feet of a church (which would pose no threat unless the church patron walked into the facility) or that a city council member may have influenced the decision of local officials?
There is no such local law that requires a 300' barrier. The phone number to city hall is in the book if you care to check...but just in case, it's 770-358-0181
"I wonder what the methodist church thinks about a new restaurant being able to brake the state law by serving alcohol or rather getting an alcohol license within limits of a place of worship.A family oriented restaurant does not traditionally serve alcohol. If we allow this to happen what will be NEXT for the community,a SHOW BAR?"
I guess you've never been to Disney World, Six Flags or Universal Studies. Each are VERY much family oriented, but low & behold- they serve beer!
What kind of Mickey Mouse world we live in? What do you think will be next- a Minnie Mouse Show Bar?
It's exciting to see the noise level our project downtown has created. Ever since Anne & I purchased the "Old Wisebram Building", we've had people from the community share their memories and experiences of Wisebram's. From Santa coming to town on the fire truck, buying their back to school cloths and who will ever forget having your feet x-rayed for that "perfect fit". We recognize the importance of the tradition that this establishment has played in Barnesville for many generations.
When I first heard that Carter's was leaving, I immediately knew that I wanted a resturant to fill the space. I wanted to create a pleasant, comfortable dining experience for any member of the community to come, sit, dine and share their memories of a "time gone by".
I first contacted Mr. Wisebram to get his feelings of this transformation and shared the vision we had for the building. It was during this conversation that inspired the decor for the new establishment. Not to give away all the surprises, but we will use many items Mr. Wisebram graciously gave me before moving to Atlanta.
Once I had the opportunity to meet and get to know Bill & Debbie Adanson, we sat and shared our visions. We are totally aligned on our goals and objectives for this project. Of all the projects I've been involved with during my 21 years in Barnesville, I find this to be the most exciting.
I invite you to come by and visit once Slices opens. Share your experiences and stories with the next generation. Be prepared- it's not the department store you once visited but the memories are alive & well. If you come during the first week of October, you may see Mr. Wisebram himself. He has promised a visit and has it on his calendar.
No, you won't see an Italian mural. This building is all about Barnesville...always has been and always will be!

Thank you so much for sharing that with us and our readers Bill. I can only speak for myself but I certainly have a big enough mouth (go ahead...launch your jokes, folks). I'll see you there!
The Georgia Code you site refers to 'distilled spirits.'
3-3-21.

Distilled spirits are defined as, "is a drinkable liquid containing ethanol that is produced by means of distilling fermented grain, fruit, or vegetables. This excludes undistilled fermented beverages such as beer and wine" by the Encyclopedia Britannica.
The menu at Slices (per our August 12 article) will include pizza, calzones, salads, specialty beers and wine.
Where is the grey area? I don't see anything other than the 100 yards(300ft)?

(B) Any wine or malt beverages within 100 yards of any school building, school grounds, or college campus. This subparagraph shall not apply at any location for which a license has been issued prior to July 1, 1981, nor to the renewal of such license. Nor shall this subparagraph apply at any location for which a new license is applied for if the sale of wine and beer was lawful at such location at any time during the 12 months immediately preceding such application;
(C) Any distilled spirits, wine, or malt beverages within 100 yards of an alcoholic treatment center owned and operated by this state or any county or municipal government therein. This paragraph shall not apply to any business having a license in effect on July 1, 1981.

(b) Nothing contained in this Code section shall prohibit the licensing of the sale or distribution of alcoholic beverages by:

(2) Bona fide private clubs, owning their own homes, subject to licensing under Chapter 7 of this title; and

(c) For purposes of this Code section, distances shall be measured by the most direct route of travel on the ground.
(d) (1) In counties having a population of not less than 175,000 nor more than 195,000, according to the United States decennial census of 1970 or any future such census, the distances provided in subparagraph (a)(1)(A) of this Code section for separation of businesses licensed under this title from churches and schools shall be measured as follows:
(A) From the property line of the tract on which is located the business regulated under this title;
(B) To the property line of the tract on which is located the church, school ground, or college campus; and
(C) Along a straight line which describes the shortest distance between the two property lines.
(2) No license in effect on April 13, 1979, shall be revoked before its date of expiration by reason of the method of measurement set out in this subsection if the license was granted in reliance on another method of measurement. No application for a license or for a renewal shall be denied by reason of the method of measurement set out in this subsection if the application is for premises for which a license was granted prior to April 13, 1979, in reliance on another method of measurement.
(e) (1) As used in this subsection, the term "housing authority property" means any property containing 300 housing units or fewer owned or operated by a housing authority created by Article 1 of Chapter 3 of Title 8, the "Housing Authorities Law."
(2) No person knowingly and intentionally may sell any alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises within 100 yards of any housing authority property. This subsection shall not apply at any location for which a license has been issued prior to July 1, 2000, nor to the renewal of such license. Nor shall this subsection apply at any location for which a new license is applied for if the sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises was lawful at such location at any time during the 12 months immediately preceding such application.
The "grey area" as you refer to it as is the product being sold. There is a definitive difference between distilled spirits and non-distilled beverages. Therein lies the letter of the law.
It was a year ago when I inquired about a beer license in this very same vicinity. I even had someone wheel off the measurement to the church as a result of this inquiry. Declined for 300' rule...was I wanting to lease from the wrong people to get this passed?
There is local ordinance defining this. I too was given the same response on malt beverage and wine license. It raises an eyebrow to say the least...I would not want to be the one in the spotlight when the fallout comes. This has upset more than we know I am sure. Another pizza parlor/bar...skip the pizza and open an upscale bar since you were able to pull off a license. Maybe a steakhouse/seafood restaurant. Something to bring forsythians and griffinites to Barnesville. Their is simply not enough patrons to keep three pizza joints in business. We are just moving revenue from American Pie and Pizza Hut to another non-local businness owner. How did this get approved...we need an extraordinary establishment to bring outside revenue to barnesville. Not another pizza joint(save the sales pitch on how slices is not ordinary, it is what it is, pizza)We need something new and different.
I just wanted to say that I tried the new pizza place and I don't think it has anything on American Pie!!!! The waitress didn't know what she was doing. Then the lady owner was so rude to me about an instance that I had NO control over!!! I was not impressed. I thought that the way she talked to me in the restaurant was VERY unprofessional and it had nothing at all to do with me, but HER staff!!! I felt like I was not helped and greeted like I should have been because I had my ten month old with me. The food is pricey, especially for lunch! The only thing that was awesome about the place was the atmosphere minus the staff!!! So F.Y.I, don't let the waitress sit you on the stage when you have a child because the lady owner is gonna be RUDE to you like you were supposed to know because that's YOUR job!!!
If your "taste" in pizza is the same as your "attitude" please stay at American Pie. At the time of your complaint, it was a brand NEW place. The waitresses were brand new at the job as the OWNERS wanted to bring in local youth to work there. As for the owner that you felt insulted by, have you never "goofed" and done the wrong thing? Maybe she "goofed". Cut'em a break. The food is good and well worth the price, but only for people with "taste"
i hate the food there personally... and i'm tired of paying $10 per person at big chic... does she think that's a top of the line food joint where she can charge that much? between that, OBs and Shanes you go broke... i got to sell a ton of moon to afford that stuff
Come on, give us a nice pub, tavern, or public house that serves tastful beer, has a nice decor, resonable priced with some healthy food, and is family friendly. Need ideas? Check out the Brick Store Pub. www.brickstorepub.com This is what Barnesville needs.
