Charles Finney died AUGUST 16, 1875.

An attorney, Finney saw so many Scripture references in Blackstone's Law Commentaries that he bought a Bible and came to faith.

the point is that the first amendment to the constitution should only be considered a guide line or a foot note. It should only matter if it suits ones own personal goals

I'll be glad when the Christians actually get OUT of politics. Slowly but surely we are making it there. Still a long road ahead before people start using their heads instead of the "holy spirit" when making decisions that effect everyone.

we would be in a lot better shape is these leaders would pray and fast before they make decisions. There were days and days of prayer and fasting before the constitution was written. It seemed to work pretty good until a bunch of idiots made it up the latter.

According to Congressional records, better than 85% of all of the members of the US House of Representatives and the US Senate claim to be followers of one the "Christian" denominations. The good Lord is alive and well in your representative government. Can I get an AMEN?!?!

You pray and fast for us then. If your prayer comes true you'll say, "see God does answer prayers", but if he doesn't you'll say "well I guess its Gods will." Either way God comes out smelling like a rose. I want a politician that makes his decisions on what he or she thinks is right and not by what the Bible said. Someone who is rational and logical.

I believe your thinking is a tad backward. In the 60s the courts kicked God out of the schools. As time continued, people that thought they could do a better job has slowing been taking God out of every equation in life possible. The only thing they have to show for it is that they have moved the country a little closer to hell while giving a little bit of this great country's blessing back. For a long time leadership has been sacrificing God to appease a few people. In the end we will all bow to God and answer for our lives – including you – believe it or not. I’m not trying to scare you or preach to you. I’m just giving you some free information. If this country continues down its chosen road and continues to turn away from God, I know what the outcome will be. It’s already been carried out once. I’m happy that I won’t be around to share the heat with the ones that chose to stay because they thought they knew more.

I cannot put much validity into a book that was translated into the kings English by servants commissioned by King James. Remember folks, if these translations went against the kings personal beliefs, it was considered heresy and punishable by death. In other words, if the king thought the sky was green and you said it was blue your head could be lobed off by the henchman’s axe. There has to be some "misinterpretations".

not sure. I will not try to decifer the ancient Hebrew language. that is my point. can you ? why dont you prove some interpretations yourself and back it up with facts... I dont believe you can...that is called faith. faith and facts do not intermingle often. they contradict one another and rarely co-exist.

if you dont want to read Gods letter to you in the kings english, then learn to read hebrew and you can translate the orginal copy for yourself.

You know, I wouldn’t have any problem with politicians serving our country as Christ served his brethren but that is NEVER the case. Heck, I have been studying theology for twenty-five years our more and I find what Christ actually teaches to be universal to all religions. When Christ was walking this earth no one knew what he was talking about because it was so radical from what people then saw the world to be that the disciples didn’t get it either. It was the established religion of that day which lead to the demise of Christ and most of all the disciples. Not much has really changed since then. Ministers who actually have realized the real message behind the teaching of Christ are restricted by centuries of dogma and are forced to preach a religious package so far removed from the actual meaning that most of the congregants don’t stand a chance of perceiving the higher vision. They are taught form with little or no respect to content.
The eyes see, the mind knows, the heart feels, words do not exist.

it is still a book that was translated by servants of a king. I never said that I believed that christ never lived. A thousand years from now Jim Morrison may have the same status. that is if we make it through 2012.

Actually the Bible, as we know today, has gone through tremendous editing and transisition loss much from translating and it goes back all the way to the first century A.D. Before the printing press was invented in 1440 there we thousands of copies of the Bible that read different from each other and as many a 10 thousand different copies much due to just spelling. In 1450-55 the first Bible was printed which was only 42 lines long. The Catholic Bible in 1546, Protestant Bible in 1647, The Greek Orthodox Bible in 1671 and the KJV in 1611. Much of the original scripture was written by individual that were not actually there at the time of the event. John Mark of the book of Mark was not of the twelve disciples. Scholars don’t really know or agree who wrote Books John and Mathew. Luke and Acts were written by Luke who was a Gentile Physician (not of the 12 disciples). For many decades after the actual events, accuracy was limited by word of mouth.
As far as, the Old Testament, Why should I care what it says other than for historical value since I am not Jewish? If I wanted to know what it actually means I wouldn’t ask a Christian minister. I would consult with a Rabbi since it was written for the Jew faith.
Biblical literalist are a dangerous bunch .

My grandmother battled mental illness several times in her life, but one thing for sure was her love for God. She prayed everyday for loved ones and strangers alike. She read her bible every day. She always saw the bright side of things. Never was she pessimistic. She wrote simple but beautiful poetry about her life and love for God. She was a founding member of a church in Thomaston. Towards the end of her life, she stopped going to church because of the lack of compassion towards her and her ailments. She was ridiculed and people tended to talk about her in covered whispers. Even family members did so. I remember someone asking her one time why she quit going to church. Her reply was “ God dwells in every true house of the lord. My church is in my heart. That is where he speaks to me".

Translation aside, the earliest book of the New Testament was not written until approximately seventy-five years after the death of Jesus. No first hand account of the life of Jesus exists except for a few references by Jewish historian Josephus. The New Testament underwent nearly a century of embellishment by word of mouth before beng written down. The Old Testament can not be ignored when speaking of Christian dogma because the Christian religion grew out of prophesy found in the Old Testament. There are many sources of information regarding the NT books-one is "The Passover Plot" by Jewish historian Schonfield.

Broaden your horizon whoever you are & quit being dumbed down by the liberals. Most of the industrialized countries of the world worship the Christian God. Look at the countries that don't...especially the Muslim countries (Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, etc.). In the Old Testament God says there will be strife in their lands for thousands of years and this is true and history has proven this to be true. I am not a preacher or Biblical scholar but I do know you need to go to a church and talk to someone who knows more about God than I do. Without God in your life, you are a sheep being led to slaughter and it doesn't have to be that way.

I absolutely do believe a person can be a Christian without going to church. I know some poor examples of Christianity that go to church and some very good Christians who never go. Most people find God after they are in jail. But I actually think he is in the heart of mankind if they so choose. I think God is everywhere. He is at every car accident and at every parade. The poor people who do not believe in God are missing the time of their lives, and the best Consultant EVER! It takes two things to enjoy the miracles of God. Faith and Trust. Here is my explanation. You have been to or seen the circus act when the tightrope walker pushes the little wheelbarrow across the high wire. You have Faith that he will not fall. If you have trust you will get in the wheelbarrow. Take a load off your feet and hop aboard.

This person, Enoc Sioul is dangerous and even misrepresenting the truth. It doesn't matter what religion you are affiliated with or even none at all, the Bible is a book used to obtain higher moral ground. The principles in the Bible are non-argueable. The most amazing part of the Bible is that it has foretold truths that in 1600 were unimaginable (especially those in Revelations.) Enoc is a false witness and believing his writings are dangerous. According to Revelations, there will come a time when we will all have to choose between God and the devil. It appears Enoc has already made his choice and it is bad news for him...don't make the same mistake.

What a great question. The answer is in what one believes what it is to be a Christian.
As for me…I choose to attend a church only because other than in reading there is where I find my lessons in life. I am not talking about learning the Bible but to learn how to love as Christ knew how. I find my salvation in what I choose to see when I look into the eyes of my brother/sister. It is in those that I would choose to turn away from is where I find my greatest lessons. Everything else is just minor details. What I find most important is to live what you believe and to believe what you live. To being a bit of an existentialist helps in doing that. I have sense some of that in you.

King James – from Scotland to England

James inherited the throne of England after the death of his mother's cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. James was never a very popular monarch among the people of England. He laid much of the groundwork that would eventually lead to the beheading of his heir Charles I during the English Civil War, but because of his political skills, his rule was relatively stable. James married Anne of Denmark by proxy on August 20, 1589, and in person on November 23, 1589 and again in person in January 21, 1590. They had eight children, of whom only three lived beyond infancy: Henry, Prince of Wales- (February 19, 1594 - November 6, 1612), Elizabeth Stuart - (August 19, 1596 - February 13, 1662), and King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland - (November 19, 1600 - January 30, 1649).

James dissolved the English Parliament on February 8, 1622, following a dispute involving parliamentary criticisms of a marriage proposed by James, of his son Charles to Princess Maria Anna of Spain. King James was quoted as saying, "Monarchy is the greatest thing on earth. Kings are rightly called gods since just like God they have power of life and death over all their subjects in all things. They are accountable to God only ... so it is a crime for anyone to argue about what a king can do."

King James is considered to have been one of the most intellectual and learned individuals ever to sit on any English or Scottish throne. He is primarily remembered for authorizing the production of the King James Version of the Bible, the highly popular English translation from Greek and Hebrew, which remains the most printed book in the history of the world, with over one billion copies in print. King James had nothing to do with the translating the Bible, he merely authorized it and provided financing for its production. Beyond that, however, James wrote several books himself.

Look, either you believe the Bible or you don't. It's very simple. Either you believe that Jesus is the Son of God, born of a virgin, died on a cross for your sins, washed them away (not covered them-that's what the sheep and goats blood was for before Him) or you don't. If Christians are wrong then we all have nothing to lose anyway because it won't matter. If everyone else is wrong they risk eternity in hell. Even scientifically speaking one makes more sense than the other. It takes a lot more faith to believe that all things are random and there is no order than to believe in Jesus Christ and Him crucified. If right and wrong are relevant to a situation and all go to heaven then perhaps your places may be next to Charles Manson, Hilter, or Hussein.

To be a Christian is to CHOOSE to live by the teachings of Christ. To understand the teachings of Christ the Old Testament is necessary due to the fact that Christianity was birthed out of Judaism. To attend church is to fellowship with your brothers and sisters in the faith-and to pray for the ignorance of those who choose to attend and not live by the Truth. Remember "Father, forgive them for they not what they do?"

It makes more sense to read KJV rather than a modern interpretation because of course the newer ones are skewed to fit today's political market and are generally written by one to three individuals-not sixty-six men that shut themselves up to seek God with fasting, prayer, and deep study of the original texts to make sure they were accurate. The fallacy that the Scriptures were suited to fit King James is absurd. Remember the birth of a Nation called America? Protestants were the ones being beaten, jailed, flogged, and killed for having this book so suited for the King. Perhaps the person who started this rumor should have studied history more closely. It seems like I remember reading in our history books that people were fleeing the presence of King James for the freedom to read this new Bible and practice their lives under its authority-rather than his.

Quite ironic that now people argue that the King wanted this particular version...

In fact there is very little if any actual evidence of Christ's existence short of the Bible. Even the mention of Josephus, who is the lone contemporary historian of that time, is inaccurate in an earlier post.

In my extensive reading of history I've not ever heard that there was praying and fasting related to the writing of the constitution. The writers were actually rather indulgent and likely to gather at the local tavern. Where did you get his hogwash?

You are correct. I mistated that Josephus was a contemporary of Christ. Josephus actually lived in the first century just after the time of Jesus and is one of the oldest known references. Some historians believe that the writers of the gospels borrowed heavily from Josephus.

History tells us that King James was an atheist. He had the scriptures translated to apease the masses of rebellous Christians who refused to coward to the lawmaking authorities of the day but rather stand up for their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Have you ever ordered fast food and got the wrong order? Have you ever made a statement and when it gets back to you, you absolutely did not say it the same way? Read the following and then tell me that you truly believe that there are no discrepancies in the Bible. You actually sound too smart in your blog to be that gullible.

When Queen Elizabeth of England died in 1603, King James VI of Scotland took the throne as King James I. There were at least
three popular versions of the Bible at that time: The Geneva Bible, the Great Bible and the Bishop's Bible. In January, 1604
the Puritans asked King James I for a new translation. Work on the new Bible began in 1607 with 47 translators who met twice each
day. The translators worked in 6 groups at 3 major universities. 2 groups worked at Oxford, 2 groups worked at Cambridge and the last 2 groups did their work at Westminster. In 1611, the first version was ready for publication. As with any other publication, revisions were made.

On 09/11/01, a terrible tragedy happened in our America. Three Caucasian males done some spectacular rescue work. Two years later a statue was erected in their Honor. The committee decided that it could not use three Caucasian males in the statue, that would reflect discrimination. How stupid. Read the numbers above again, if you will, renglish8. Can you really picture 47 men agreeing on something so complex as The Holy Bible? I have been married four times and I can picture 47 men in agreement on absolutely NOTHING.

Christians and other religious extremists are the cause of most of the hate, strife, and discontent in the world. There have been thousands of times more murders and mob killings in the name God then there ever have been in the name of Lucifer. The few times I've really been shafted in business deals have been by Christians.

The last thing I want is to live in a country where hateful, prejudiced, self-righteous self-anointed "Christians" make the rules. They are just as bad as the taliban, only they carry a different bible.

I’m sorry if I am rocking your biblical apple cart but if you would read up on how the Bibles was composed, so when you do read scripture you will know the (who, what, when, where, how, and why) of the text you are studying.
The term “false prophet” is just a word fundamentalist use for someone that gives then something to think about that is outside their religious comfort zone.
I do not fear my God. Why should someone fear that which is love? I certainly do not fear yours and someday maybe you will learn not to either.

The American "church" has been asleep for years and now we're waking up to realize that complacency affords some serious consequences. America is not God's chosen people and His blessing on ANY nation is all because of His grace and mercy. Christians should be involved in politics like they should be invovled with any area of life. Unfortunately much of what has been called "Christian" in politics is not representative of Jesus but of religious agendas that are no better than the next guy. Christians need to let the message of Christ invade their own heart first and then take it to Atlanta/Washington. Then it might actually make a difference.

If you are so obtuse to think that "God" has some special favoritism he saves for "Christian" nations, I would refer you to a little place called Central/South America. The population throughout that part of the world is better than 95% Christian, yet its millions of residents live in some of the most impoverished and embattled countries in history.
Thank you though for the comment. Grotesquely flawed logic is always nice for a good laugh. Here's some sound logic you and all of the other "good Christian folk" ought to consider. Being a "Christian" does not make you a good or better person. However, being a better "Christian" CAN make you a much better person.

Your ego may take a hit here Enoc but I don't think for one minute you are a prophet of any sort...I said you are a "false witness." You aren't capable of rocking anything of mine because I am very firm in my belief. I just don't want you to persuade those who may not be as resolute in theirs. Sometimes being educated doesn't always make a person smart...and I don't think it is very smart to try to persuade people that the Bible is nothing more than a fictitious novel pieced together over time by a bunch of laymen. Your God may be all about love now but start publicly leading His sheep astray and you will find out that there is alot of tough love in God as well.

don't think I would have mentioned being married four times in a debate about rightousness and Christianity. The fact remains that there are millions of God fearing,loving Christian people all over the world. There are also many who name the name of Christ and do not live by what the Bible states-therefore we have a society that is riddled with people who call themselves Christians and yet persist in shady business deals, hypocrisy of all sorts, and sins of all types. No wonder people don't believe it is real. They haven't seen people who call themselves Christians live what they say they believe. I get that. I was there once myself...and very adamant abut it too!That does not negate the fact that there are real Christians who live out their entire lives heeding and living by what they know to be true. Jesus told the woman caught in adultery to go and sin no more. Millions of people all over the world have chosen to do the same. Like I stated earlier, either you believe the Bible or you don't. It's very simple. If you don't, then you don't. And yes, I have seen thousands of men agree on things. Ever been to a ball game? Or a political rally? When men have a single purpose-they agree. Wonder how the Constitution ever got signed?
I also strongly suggest that if you do not want to live in a country that is founded on the Word of God and has been repeatedly blessed by the fact that there are so many praying REAl Christians in it then there are several other countries on this planet that will accept you. By all means go live somewhere else. What rules would you like to have? None? We are almost there. In a society where anything goes...everything goes. Have a problem with pedophilia? Sorry, it won't be wrong anymore...everything is relative and who are you to judge? You don't know what that person has been thorough..and it's a disease after all....people-think! There must be laws to live by. The laws must come from somewhere. If we are random by design and have no real purposes then why exist? What IS the purpose of it all? It is so amazing-it is much harder to believe in nothing than to believe in something and with so great a gift as salvation...how can we refuse? Jesus said he did not come into the world to condemn the world but rather that the world through him might be saved. And this is the condemnation that men loved darkness rather than light...

I apologies Mr. Coffey, I must have you confused with the Coffey family that lives in Lamar County. I went to school here in the 60s and 70s.

1: 'Thou shall have no other gods before Me.'
2. : 'Thou shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness
of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth
beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.'
3. : 'Thou shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain.'
4. 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.'
5. 'Honor your father and your mother.'
6. 'Thou shall not murder.'
7. 'Thou shall not commit adultery.'
8. 'Thou shall not steal.'
9. 'Thou shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.'
10.' Thou shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not
covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his
female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything
that is your neighbor's.'
As you can see the Ten Commandments were written in the time where a primitive group of people was given a set of rule that would keep them from reverting back to the barbaric state in which they once evolved. Granted this is a code of conduct by which all societies should abide if it is deemed to be of divine origin or not. We should also recognize that we do not live in a theocracy and respect different belief systems. Yes, I read my Bible daily, but that is not all I read. If this country fails, as did Rome, it’s not because of its people but the Christian religious community lacking the ability to adapt to the spiritual needs of modern man. Another reason for the failure of the country will that the common man has lost control of its government because losing to the threat of the greed of the ruling class, thus, the evaporation of the middle class. The dynamic range of the haves and have nots is greater now than ever before in modern times.
People want to come to the US because they think they will have a chance for a better economic life and as usually they will bring their culture with them. This country has become less a melting pot and more a pluralistic society. Many long time citizens have had a difficult time dealing with this fact.

They were also lawyers, politicians, as well as, ministers.
Not very many people could read in them days so the educated had to wear several hats. MOst all were upper class land owner and to be able to also serve as a minister greatly increased your influence anoung voters.

Damn well said, tylerdpeek. It is too bad we cannot make a vaccine that makes politicians, real Christians in their heart. If so, let it take priority over The Swine Flu vaccine. GREED has ruined the world. Greed and drugs, running neck to neck, but it looks like obama is taking the lead, even over those catastrophes. God blessed us with a wonderful America and we blew it. I wish an Amish person would run for President and bring his whole Amish Family aboard. They could bring us down a notch or two.

You need to take you a big ole sip of communion wine so you can level out a bit, Doc. You and all your Grandpappies and Grandmammies will never love and respect God as much as I do. All my husbands may be in Heaven also. This world absolutely sucks nowadays. But if you think that God meant for you to read the Bible and take it word for word, then you must believe that those scholars sipping their wine were also God.
