Something doesn't smell right about this Lamar County soap opera and I don't mean the rank BBQ smoke that used to emanate from Vaughn's exhaust fans at his short lived restaurant enterprise in Milner.
Questions:
Were Vaughn and Dorsett treated differently than other criminals facing similar long terms in the penitentiary?
Did they bargain such a sweet plea because they had cash and a faltering business to forfeit to Lamar County?
What was the source of the $100,000 cash?
Should it not have been seized as part of the defendants' continuing criminal enterprise?
The 21.59 acres owned by Vaughn and Dorsett at 330 Old Alabama Road is presently valued by the LC Assessors office at $534,501!
A review of Vaughn and Dorsett properties values is nearly 1 MILLION dollars. This can be verified at http://www.qpublic.net/ga/lamar/
Why was the bulk of their assets left intact and not TOTALLY seized?
Under Georgia Code 16-11-131 (b) Vaughn could have been sentenced to 5 years in prison if convicted on a single count of felon in possession of a gun charge. He had 23 counts against him!
There were and still are many valuable assets that could have possibly forfeited by the defendants. Are there other valuable assets not discovered or overlooked by the system?
Who profited from Vaughn's receiving such a "slap on the wrist"?
the man served two years. give it a break. hopefully he has learned his lesson and will stay out of trouble. if not then he goes back to prison and then stiffer penalties.
people who have committed worse crimes do less time.
p.s. - i am a white blogger. (wanted to throw that one in before all the racist comments come out)
This is a prime example of what is wrong with our judicial system. kinda reminds me of parents that threaten their kids with punishment for doing things against the rules then dont follow through with the punishment. the kids learn that the final outcome is not so bad and do it anyway... if the only thing that keeps folks from commiting crimes is integrity, we are in trouble...
Well I tell u one thing a man can commit all these crimes if they was going to release him early why did they give him all this time and he not even serve a quarter of his term thats dang stupid!! It's all about the money thats all just cause he got money he can get out they to learn he did the crime he needs to serve all the time that way justice will be served if he did it once he will do it again it's just a matter of time!!
Maybe he's learned his lesson????? Yes, hopefully he has, but going on track record here doesn't look good. If you recall, he had just gotten out of prison when he commited these crimes he is serving time for now. But, to be positive, let's hope he has learned and will start fresh and stay on the positive side of things.
I don't think two years is all that much for the damage he caused. No wonder we have a problem with people stealing. He got to keep all that property. Maybe we should have seized it and hired a real prosecutor. The one we have not did a plea with a guy caught with a stolen gun and stolen car, and it turned out that one killed someone for a set of wheels and paralyzed another young man.
I know plea deals save the prosecutor time (he gets paid the same if he goes to trial or not) but plea deals suck for public safety.
"hopefully he has learned his lesson and will stay out of trouble. if not then he goes back to prison and then stiffer penalties."
Your weak lament may bring hope to you, but alas, HOPELESS is closer in being the correct verbiage due to Vaughn's prior criminal acts and subsequent proof that he "didn't learn his lesson" very well. Short prison sentences make for inadequate teaching of lessons to be learned.
As you will read, Vaughn was convicted of very serious charges in 1988 and was incarcerated for about 20 months. It appears Vaughn "flew below the radar" for almost 20 years while amassing a fortune in assets. With two such shallow sentences, do YOU think Vaughn has "learned his lesson..."? I think not.

That is a very astute observation.
My thought on that subject would be:
'people who have committed LESSER crimes do MORE time'....BECAUSE they did not have the resources to make platinum plea bargains. These LESSER-MORE defendants were forced to take any plea deal without dictating terms.

Wait! The lead sentence says "barring public outcry", he will be paroled.
So, tell us, who do we complain to? I want to see if citizens can really change this!
According to LC Assessor Records, the property was purchased in September 2007 at a county sale. A prominent local businessman was awarded the property on a bid of $335,000. A restaurant called Backwoods Grill is doing business at that location...for now anyway.
He got really screwed over by Buice and them, there was a lot more to the story than was put out there. I am glad he will get out. Besides, he lost almost everything he had, including 2 years of his life. And he is a really nice fella too. Oh well, I am glad to see him get out.
I tell u who got the money for it dang police stupid butt they probaly didn't do nothing for county citizens either!! They better hope that man don't get out and blow the thing up!!
Every1 acts as if this is new the police needs snitches without them they wouldn't get nothing done. So OF COURSE they r going 2 work out plea deal ect.......ect....... This is the system & how it works they need the criminals as much the criminals need the police it's a balance of order. LOL..ppl just seem surprizes when the find out the police is involved. DUMMIES they gotta put the drugs back on the street. TRASH 2 I guess!
It does seem like a slap on the wrist but one must understand the power of prayer because yes God does still hear a sinner's prayer maybe we all should learn to pray and get to know Jesus because there is power in prayer!
If this guy knows what’s best for him he will move out of the area. He’ll be easy pickens for any county boy who can nail him for something that will revoke his parole. This case is an excellent example of Lamar County’s inability to bring to justice to a high profile case when the defendant has the financial resources to stage a costly defense. It is, all about money. A county with a population of only around 17,000 people, it does not take too many cases to bust the budget. When he joined the county’s largest white mega church it was an incredibly smart tactical move and proved that he is no dummy.
Fact is, he was not convicted of all the accusations, and a plea bargain that dropped most of the charges was offered for a reason.
Possibly they didn't get the big dog he thought he did, and also didn't want other stuff to get out like it would in a jury trial.
Possibly BBQ man would have walked if it went to trial and all the evidence (and lack therof) was presented. Who knows. but again, sling enough $h!t at someone, and some will stick.
I think the plea bargian probably saved the county some embarrassment.
15 TO 20 years might be an overstatement. Wasn't he involved in a criminal case in Spalding County in the mid to late 90's. His former partner in the paving co. went to prison. I thought Rudy did too, just for a shorter time.

Personally Mary says... i think you should just not even be getting on here and leaving comments on a article about a man getting out of dad-gum jail when errrryyyboodddyyy knows about you and your late husband (HA HA). Probably best you just mosey on down to that store you work at buy yourself a big ole jar of "HUSH MOUTH"
This case cost Buice his re-election by how he handled it. He lost Milner and it was just enough votes to wedge him out of office.....Justice served. Who would have thunk?
"Vaughn was implicated in a multi-state cargo theft ring but avoided trial on the vast majority of the charges filed against him."
Where were the FEDS?
If criminal actions were perpetrated in multi state jurisdictions, would these acts not qualify for Federal intervention?
Questions to ponder while Vaughn lounges in the LaGrange Facility awaiting his harvesting the fruits of his sowed sweetheart plea deal.
Was there an ongoing criminal enterprise?
Did Vaughn violate the RICO Act?
Was a Criminal Conspiracy present?
Were any real estate assets and business ventures financed with unreported income?
Was rental income reported?
Were bank accounts investigated?
Was a paper trail followed to discover details regarding Vaughn properties?
Were the seized weapons legally purchased?
Who purchased them for Vaughn? He is a Felon.
Were the forfeited weapons stolen property?
Were these weapons destroyed?
Were the serial numbers intact on all weapons?
Were any Federal or State Agencies involved?
The FBI, IRS, ATF, GBI, and the T-Men could have assisted and shined a light to the bottomless pit of the Vaughn Empire.
Were local authorities looking at 'a low budget conviction at any price' when the $100K cash and abandoned BBQ building were offered?
Local question from this inquiring mind:
Why are sale details missing on some Lamar County properties owned by Vaughn?
"No sales information associated with this parcel." is displayed at the Assessors web site when one wants to see sale details.
Who did he purchase the properties from?
How much was paid? This is PUBLIC information.
http://qpublic.net/ga/lamar/index-search.html
Type in Vaughn and check my statement.
Vaughn owns many properties in Spalding and Butts Counties as well as Lamar County.
Vaughn is far from being a poor ex-convict who must stay in a half-way house when he is released. He doesn't have to consider being an "ordinary" poor Black ex-con worrying about his next meal and if he can find a job. No suh!
Vaughn will be released with a jaunty step and an ear-to-ear grin on his rotund face.
Vaughn will cruise over to his Old Alabama Road acreage where the partying will begin.
I can visualize Ol' Rudy and Miss Peggy on the patio sipping Hennesey Cognac while counting their rental money. They will raise their cut crystal snifters and propose a hearty toast to the authorities who gave them new life with their "PROSECUTORIAL PLEA DEAL OF A LIFETIME".
What's next for Randolph Vaughn? Who knows?
With Vaughn's garnered wealth, organizing experience, imposing personality, numerous loyal "friends" and his "remarkable" business acumen, he potentially has a career looming in the rough and tumble political arena.
your right something doesn't smell right! but think about who was the sheriff while he was doing all his junk? it wasn't Buice thats for sure, now that the good old boy network is back in place lets see just how quick ol rudy is back in business.
After more research, it appears that Mr. Vaughn was not convicted in the 1990's case in Spalding County. So, even though he may have been implicated, I guess he did for all practical purposes fly under the radar for 20 years.
Don't bother getting upset by this.. Just remember who let him make such a wimpy a plea deal. I am still smiling about the LAST LINE IN YOUR ARTICLE... At least we know who to call now. lol "Get-er-done
Someone said, in an earlier post, that the plea bargain, probably saved the county some embarassment.
I am convinced that the present DA would plea bargain any offence, including murder.
I feel the embarassment to Lamar County is the plea Bargain.
I think it is sad to judge a person on hear say because people say bad things when they are scared or just don't know any better but when a person really knows somebody and the facts the matter is the people that are judging are not God i know they were a lot of wrong doing but more than half came from the sheriff department when they came to my home they robbed & stoled from me for a fact so i know both parties involved here and whoever talks about vaugh should talk about there self because he had done no more than you or I. i would like to think lamar county would weigh the good and the bad because they are good people it makes the good one look bad when you talk about your neighbor then you want to go to church on sunday and say you have done nothing wrong let god be the judge. judge not less you be judged
No he hasn't done his time his time is 10 years prison 10 years on probation thats his time the man only done 2 years duh thats nt his time come on it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out!!
Listen to what you are saying! Don't just get rid of Buice, what about your D.A. and etc.. What about cops killing other cops for knowing too much? They are still on duty! Let's go up the chain of command and get rid of all the good ole boys! The man has served what is required by law- so let it be!
Anonymous 13.1.1 on 09/07/09 at 04:07 PM asks a rhetorical question:
"What about cops killing other cops for knowing too much? They are still on duty!"
Call N. Alcars replies:
What about it? I have many paragraphs to say a lot of things "about it"!
Do you have actual knowledge of cop killings ? Who were the cops killed? When were they killed? How where they killed? Who killed them? What were the motives? How many were killed? What is "knowing too much"? Where are the "killers" working? Have the bodies been discovered? Do you really 'know anything' or just belching smoke to feel good?
It is very disingenuous of you to presume facts and cast a wide net of veiled innuendos against local law authorities. Reading between the lines, one can only assume that you were referring to the LCSO and their cadre of hard working officers sworn 'To Protect and Serve'.
You are a hot commodity if you have tangible proof of homicides with subsequent cover-ups.
Consider yourself very lucky if THG isn't served with subpoenas seeking to identify you.
You would then be asked by authorities to reveal your knowledge about any "cop killings".
My unsolicited non-lawyerly advice is for you to immediately repost and admit that your typed utterances were not of oral origin, but spontaneously erupted in error from an orifice associated with daily physiological functions.

Do you want the local citizenry to quake in fear that LCSO is infiltrated with a lot of devious gun-toting 'wild cowboys and cop murderers'? This isn't Tombstone of 1881.
From the raw rookie on the bottom rung of the police ladder to the top brace occupied by our honorable Sheriff, HOW do YOU propose to "get rid of all the good ole boys"? Jail or grave?
You should forever remain ANONYMOUS, but, seek immediate help for your dissociative disorder.
Since your posting is subjectly posted on this Rudy Vaughn article, and you appear to align yourself positively in favor of Vaughn's pending release, is it possible that you are an unnamed and un-indicted co-conspirator? Are you kin? looking for a j-o-b ...OR...
did someone smuggle a lap top into 'ol Rudy's cell and HE plunked out this ANONYMOUS post?
Nah!..fergiddabouit..that couldn't be true! Rudy proclaims to be an "honest businessman", not an 'honest middle-aged word merchant'.
You need to back up and leave Mary alone. You are showing just how ignorant you are by keeping on... thruth is you dont know jack about any of this and if you knew who Mary was you would back off. Just a friendly warning from your local health department... haha

People like you are pathetic.
He flew below the radar for 15-20 years when we had other Sheriffs in office, then he finally got arrested.
The local prosecutor, one long known in Monroe and Lamar Counties for cutting plea deals, cut a deal.
Now the parole board is letting him loose early.
This is all Joe Buice's fault.
Is that right?
