The Georgia Department of Labor says unemployment insurance claims shot up 174 percent last month compared to December 2007.
Thurmond says 128,625 laid-off workers filed first-time claims in December.
His department also processed 19,160 first-time claims for federal extended unemployment benefits, bringing the total to 111,384 since the program triggered in Georgia in July. Federal extended benefits are available to jobless workers who have exhausted regular state unemployment compensation.
Among metropolitian areas with the highest increase in claims last month, Rome and Dalton were up about 350 percent and Gainesville 216 percent. The areas with the smallest increases were Hinesville, 92 percent, Macon at 116 and Augusta with a 119 percent jump.

1.) Obammy has brains and knows how to use them.
2.) Obammy is paying for his inaugeration mostly from private donations. I sent him a few thousand bucks myself because I was sick of Bush.
3.) I am a two time Bush voter. 90% of the time I vote Republican, but owning a small business I got screwed by Bush and the health care industry.
I will now vote for anyone but a dumb Republican. No one can be worse than some of the dumb people they offer up.
Some people really need some welfare from time to time but if career welfare patrons werecut off, illegal ailens would have to compete for work.
It amazes me that the school systems have millions of dollars for things like sports but can't afford to actually train young people in things that will much more likely make a difference in the future of our nation.
What are they thinking? How can they millions on games when they can't manage to fund something that much more likely would build a good paying future? This country seems to have its priorities all screwed up.
Instead of building things for the future, we are educating a herd of wood chip shovelers for our new state-of-the-art incinerator that we will wind up paying millions of dollars to have.
You are a perfect example of a reaction before obtaining all the facts. You obviously read some of the comment and automatically assumed that someone said anyone on welfare was lazy.
Since there are many illegal aliens living close by and doing well - those individuals that prefer to collect welfare rather than compete and work those jobs would fall under that lazy category.
Those falling under the uneducated category can't complain because at some point in their life an education was afforded to them. If the chose to drop-out or chose not to learn - they have no one to blame but themselves.
