Something else happened as well. According to a release from a FFA spokesperson he was told to land in N.J. and was closer than his landing in the hudson. There is question if some communications systems went out as well, b/c he should have never headed the way he did. It is a miracle that nobody died on this plane. He did a hell of a job landing it on the water for sure though.
Perhaps he chose the Hudson because he was not confident he could make it to Teterboro & did not want to take out people on the ground.
I have flown close to a million miles as a passenger & always appreciate having the older pilots since they know how to deal with crazy, unpredictable events
