First ever Kids' Night draws a huge crowdvideo

The newest addition to Barnesville Buggy Days, Kids' Night, made its debut Tuesday evening at Summers Field and drew a huge crowd.

Attendance estimates ranged from 300-500 and organizers and volunteers were blown away by the turnout.

According to President and CEO of the chamber of commerce, Amanda Rose, "Because this is our first year hosting this event we weren't sure what to expect in terms of weather, attendance numbers, or even participation. But judging by the smiles on everyone's faces it seems like a great success

I just want to clarify that it was a child that blew the horn on the fire engine. Not any fire dept personnel. We are thankful that no one was hurt & the horse was caught before anyone was hurt

Yes any fire dept personnel. I saw 20 firefighters and two emts. Horse, fire safety house, fire engine, color hair and many more. Have funny. Not any law enforcement.

And I would like to clarify that obviously there was someone at tonights event handing out free samples of STUPID!!!! It is the responsibility of the Fire Dept as well as the parents of this alleged child who blew the horn not to let unsupervised children "play" in the fire truck where something like this could happen where there was very obviously EQUINE ACTIVITIES taking place!

I would just like to know how who ever you are can blame what happened with the horse on a child when there had to be an adult there for the child to be in the fire truck. So it was the fire department who is to blame. What person in their right mind would do that with kids & even little babys on horses right next to them. And then going to blame it on a kid. The only person to blame is the person who let the kid do it. They better be thankful that the child did not get hurt bad.

ok start for first year i guess. Hopefully there will be more community and business people participating and having more activities or things for the children to do.

Well obviously it was an accident and I am sure everyone is glad the child did not get hurt. Why do some people always point the finger at others when something happens? Maybe everyone needs to sign a waiver before participating in anything.

Law enforcement cant get overtime so thats why you didnt see them there....take your complaints to KR.

No one said anything about blaming a child! It was the fire dept's fault 100%!!! And I am thankful that the child was not hurt, it was my child that this happened to so don't EVER tell me that I should be thankful that she didn't get hurt any worse. But as a horse owner myself, ANY IDIOT knows horses are unpredictable and the "supervising adult" should be very thankful she did not get hurt any worse.

I appreciate that everything was free, but was a bit disappointed by the lack of activities. There was the horses, pony ride, and face painting and kids could look in the fire truck. Hopefully next year will be bigger and better, but thanks to the organizers for thinking of the kids!

I thought the event was a great success. My kid loved everthing from the cup cake walk to the buggy rides. Many thanks to the chamber for putting on this event. I hope the do it again next year.

Let me clarify the horn blowing!!!! The Fire Man in charge gave the child permission to blow horn, I think it was a bad judgement call, but I thank god no one was hurt. MY apoligies to the parent and child of this incendent!!!!!!

Ummm how exactly did you miss the incredibly bright sheriff car blocking traffic for the boy scouts? Not to mention a police booth right next to the firetrucks to mention. Plenty of officers were there, most not in uniform. You don't need a lot of police walking around in uniform during these kind of events. Police uniforms can be very intimidating and scary for a lot of kids. Almost as scary as that frog mascot that was there! :)

Well DUH the finger is being pointed due to the severe lack of common sense displayed by the fire dept. IT WAS THEIR FAULT!!I do not understand what business a fire truck has at every freakin event ESPECIALLY where there are horses and children. What's the big deal about a fire truck?

How can you blame a child? The Fire Dept personnel were the ones who gave the child permission!!! Um...hello? I really hope my house never catches on fire...the lack of common sense and irresponsibility displayed by the fire dept is just ridiculous!

I realize that this event was free, but am very dissapointed by the lack of activities. Also I am very glad my child didn't ride the horses, the fire dept should be ashamed and should not be allowed at events where there are horses and children! GOD was watching!

The majority of people aren't around horses enough to know the consequence of blowing a horn around them. Animals have two natural responses to danger, fight or flight. With horses, flight is the most common.

The event had a non-commercial, hometown feel to it. Very enjoyable. Great job done by the planners and volunteers.

I agree...I was really nervous when my kids got on b/c that fancy sheriff's car started moving with the lights flashing. I was sure he was about to flip on the siren!

GA Law say's no equine supervisor is liable for any injury or death caused by any equine activity!!!!!!
Please make sure you are totally educated before you or your child particapates!!!!
You take the risk all on yourself..

Under Georgia law, an equine activity sponsor or equine professional is not liable for an injury to or the death of a participant in equine activities resulting from the inherent risks of equine activities, pursuant to Chapter 12 of Title 4 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated

UM...I am educated as I have horses myself! NO ONE EVER said anything about the horse owners or sponsors being responsible! IT WAS THE FIRE DEPT'S STUPIDITY! APPARENTLY THE CITY OF BVILLE NEEDS TO EDUCATE THEIR STAFF ON COMMON SENSE!!!

You must not know many cops. My husband is a Spalding County deputy (NOT BUICE!!) and even when he is off he is always armed and most of the time has a set of handcuffs with him. Its part of the job. They are ready to respond to calls 24/7, the uniform is just merely an accessory.

maybe the owner of the horse should train the horse not to run when he hears a horn guess we should ban any horse riding in this county because a horn might get blown and if horses are so unpredictable then why would you let a child ride them in the first place doesent sound very smart to me....just saying

Yeah some cops are like that. Its an ego thing I think. You wont see many off duty cops in Barnesville armed when off duty, and certainly not carrying around handcuffs. Thants funny!

Just saying..YOU ARE A JERK!!! The owners had nothing to do with this...HORNS CAN EVEN STARTLE PEOPLE! OBVIOUSLY YOU ARE NOT VERY SMART...Horses are used as entertainment sources at hundreds of events everywhere, all the time, people should use common sense, not many people give a darn about a firetruck, there were however hundreds of children that stood in line to ride the horses! I HAVE HORSES MYSELF, and they are much more intelligent than YOU!!!!!

Two houses were not lost. The first house fire was stopped exactly where the flames were when they arrived on scene. The 2nd fire was a vacant house...

I saw plenty of law inforcement local and county. It was city policemen that helped me when I was locked out of my car after volunteering for a couple of hours and standing in the rain. I was sorry to hear about the child getting hurt with the horse. Accidents do happen and one did. Instead of blaming people it might be better to weigh the cost in the future if you are willing to take the risk. Accidents do happen. Everybody was volunteering to make a great time for the kids, this was all for the kids. I'm sure the lady that owned the horse that was dragged would appreciate someone checking on her with a few kind words as well since she gave it her all to hold that horse back to save the child. This has truly been blown out of proportion in this paper. I'm grateful as well as the rest of you should be that there were no permanent injuries to either one of them. If an adult had been holding the child in the fire truck they would have had a hard time stopping them from blowing that horn. Have you ever had your child in a shopping cart and been able to keep them from pulling things off of a shelf? They usually get something in their hands don't they. This was an accident and accidents happen. If you have ever handled horses you know they can as well as any other animal be unpredictable. We all know children and adults can be just as unpredictable.I'm glad that they weren't hurt as bad as they could have been. They are alive, not paralized and will recover. We DO have something to be grateful for. A foolish move by a child almost cost my son the use of his right hand when he was small. A glass door broke and cut through the nerves in his wrist. Accident happen and you have a choice as to how you are going to handle it. Will you choose grace that has been showed to you many times or choose blame when you have been forgiven more times that you could ever count. Forgive and move on, the anger will tear you up and put you in place you really don't want to be. Bitter is not a good place... choose grace and forgiveness...
