In an all too frequent scenario, two trucks collided at the intersection of Highway 341 and Grove Street at approximately 11 a.m. Wednesday.

A late model, tan GMC crew cab traveling was traveling south on Highway 341 at the posted speed. The driver professed to be using cruise control to assure a steady speed.

I always proceed through that intersection with caution. The idiots crossing on Grove street are extremely brave.

Make it happen. Vote yes on splost. We need a fulltime paid fire chief and firefighters with all the new firehouse manned 24/7. There are not 50 firefighters. We are about 100 firefighters. Not 1 paid firefighter on duty in the county? Not 3 paid firefighters? Need 3 or 6 or 9 paid firefighters on duty in the city and county everyday. How many paid firefighters? We need a fulltime paid firefighters. Vote yes on splost. You people the voter can Make It Happen.

.....All airbags deployed, both drivers were wearing seatbelts and neither were injured....

Thank God the drivers were not injured...THIS TIME!... Accidents DON'T JUST HAPPEN. Accidents are CAUSED. For this crash to have occurred, the drivers must have been distracted for this "accident" to occur.

Were both drivers REFRAINING from texting, adjusting their radio, CD or casette palyers, watching movies on their LCD, eating and drinking, smoking, spitting tabacky juice out the window, putting on make up, using an electric shaver, reading gas prices on Reliable Mart signs, reading maps, books or newspapers, wriring on a note pad, talking on their cell phones, slouching or reclining down in their seats, picking their noses, singing, looking at passengers while talking, allowing pets in their laps, accessing Internet mobile hot spots with 'u-connect systems", scolding unruly children, looking at themselves in their mirrors, adjusting GPS systems and MP3 players, arguing with passengers, waving at pedestrians, watching flying birds, driving tired or sleepy, diligently watching for patrolling LCSO radar units, etc...etc...etc... AD Nauseam.

According to a detailed study at Heriot-Watt University, 3 out of 4 four (75%) automobile accidents occur because of driver distraction.
Was this 'accident' one of the RARE 25% not caused by driver distraction? Maybe the drivers involved will chime in and let us know the real cause other than saying, it was just an 'accident'.

I can ask these sanctimonious questions because I am always a passenger in a vehicle. My E-Z GO Geezer Golf Cart won't maintain minimum speed on the highways and I don't own an automobile.

BTW: How is voting for SPLOST going to PREVENT wrecks?

I have to cross Grove sometimes and it scares me. That intersection is frightening!
I don't think I'm an idiot when I cross there #2 MINICoop but others might disagree......

It is very simple. If you are coming from the county part of grove st you pull up to the stop sign and look left then look straight. Look left again and proceed into the middle of the median area.. STOP!!!!!! Look right. When no one is coming then proceed towards town. How is this hard. Dont really try to multi task too much here. Look ONE way and go a little bit. Look the other way and go again. This is unbelievable. Nothing really wrong with the intersection, however something is wrong with drivers. Especially women drivers. Sorry ladies. It is what it is. I drive for a living. I see more cars and trucks in a month and most people see in a year. I can see down in each car/truck and see who is driving. Certain "types" of women are worse than others.

If the purpose of your rambling inane post was intended to solicit YES voters for SPLOST, your actions LOST SPLOST. It's NO SPLOST for 12 residents here at the Last Days Nursing Home. It appears you want to be a PAID firefighter. I called Moses, he said, "ha..ha..ha..ha ha, ha.
ya' gotta be kiddin'..he probably would let my cage burn down. ha ha "

We have our own volunteer fireman here with our own hard hats to fit over our balding hard heads. A few guys have those shiny black boots.

We viewed the movies "Backdraft"and "Towering Inferno" last week and my neighbors think we are now qualified for any conflagration.
You might want to hit up Joe Buice for a job, I hear he is already lining up his next group for when he "takes over" again from our competent Sheriff Waller. It could be a rumor though, I need a battery in my old buzzing Beltone hearing aid.

Moses is the well educated and talkative parrot in the care, custody and control of Sheila Tolley. I am informed by Ms. tolley that your method to garner YES votes for SPLOST has driven Moses into another fit of maniacal laughter. Please tell me what driver's ed manual says that when crossing a four lane highway, you should pull halfway across and stop. Do you see a stop sign between the north and south bound lanes? I think this is why a lot of accidents are caused, at this intersection and others. I know for fact that the Thomaston St/Hwy 36 intersection had many accidents caused by this very example, prior to the light being installed. Stop being impatient! Wait until you can safely cross the entire distance before proceeding. This is what I was told by a former Barnesville PD chief years ago. People do the same thing at the Roberta Drive intersection, and it's only a matter of time before an accident occurs.

I drive a lot too. Your post implies that you drive a big truck, maybe a tractor trailer. Are you telling us that you're going to pull 60+ feet of truck halfway across the highway and stop, leaving the a$$ end of the truck blocking a lane? Just how many accidents do you think that might cause? Way to go, Einstein!

when coming from town traveling north on 41 and making that left on to grove st it is very hard to see the on coming traffic unless you are pulled up to the south bound turning lane and almost in the south bound lanes...

NEXT.............

Driving a tractor trailer has a little different twist to things. Its is true that when driving a big truck in that situation you would hope that you could make it happen so that no vehicles were traveling in either direction and yeild in the middle and continue one. A super easy fix to this if you couldnt would be to pull out south bound and do a U-turn at the bottom of the hill.

Number 6.1 you can just speculate of what type of women I am talking about. Use your imagination.

Bottom line on all of this whether it be this accident or the ones that happen down near the funeral home or either something like the butts co officer crash in that parker branch rd area. 90% of the time it falls back on the motorist that are doing the crossing instead of the ones that are traveling down the highway to begin with. Cell phones, make-up, arguing with children, thinking about what the day holds, etc is what gets them distracted from making smart or logical decisions when operating that motor vehicle. CARELESS

I cross this intersection daily. I have noticed that when the grass is cut in the median strip (all the way to Hotspot) the visibility is much better. For whatever reason the grass is only cut around the signs at Grove Street and Hwy 341 on a regular basis. It sure would help if county commissioners or city council would take note of this and make sure the grass is cut. I am not sure if this stretch of highway is city or county.

I have to agree with #6. There is a clear view in both directions of the 4 lane at that intersection. The problem occurs when someone tries to cross both lanes at once instead of crosing one, waiting for the other to be clear and then crossing it. It doesn't take a rocket scientist, just people taking 10 seconds of their precious time in order to save their own life and someone else's.

Like wow! you people..like..don't know what..like.. you are talking about...you know. All by homies in school that..you know..ride with me..like..we are all 16 years old..and kinda like experts..you know.. on that Grove St. and Hwy 41 intersection. Since Daddy bought me like..a new used car, us BFF's go..like by there 2 times a day..like...going to school..you know. I am like an expert..you know.

Like..I have had my license for 3 weeks now..you know.. and..like I am really smart..like.. on how to..like.. drive past Grove St. ..Bambi, Misty and I..like..we always speed up to..80 or 85 miles an hour. You know..like it is better to..like get past that bad intersection..like in a great big hurry..you know. I'm glad to share..like..one of my driving tips ..you know..like it?

Do not stop in the median! If you can not cross, do NOT go! If you want to turn, stay in the lane closest to you and USE YOUR TURN SIGNAL. If you are going to the Reailable Mart, go stright across and turn in off the Grove Street drive; do NOT come from Atlanta Street, turn left and cross BOTH lanes of highway traffic!

Isn't it nice how all the extra traffic brought on by the construction of the network of bypasses is working so well?

Say, when did we get to vote on the combined city/county fire department? I seem to have missed that.

More taxes are not the answer. The frigging school board is on a spending spree and taxes are too high now!

Vote NO on increased taxes!

You should contact the Dept. of Transportation on that one. Not the city council. The DOT is not cutting grass like they used to because of budget cuts. They don't want to cut jobs so they don't cut grass unless it is a major hazard. If you think it's a hazard contact DOT. Personally, I don't mind the grass.
