An interesting thing happened on my way to work this morning. Traveling into town on Highway 18 I noticed gas had risen to $2.75/gallon at the Crossroads Shell. I was not completely surprised as I noticed all gas prices rising since the holidays.
But in my rearview mirror I noticed something that made my radar do a little more than blip. Ingles gas prices were holding steady at $2.53/gallon.

However, society needs to work toward curbing our dependence on oil..foreign and domestic.
In the mean time, looks like Petro will be getting my business.
@#3 - I completely agree with you and I will be watching these prices through the course of the next couple of days.
IF the prices were raised in the midst of snow concerns then logic would suggest that a glance at weather.com and its now 10% chance of precipitation would bring them right back down.
What is going on? We need to do something. Perhaps a boycott of sorts is necessary. Drive as little as possible folks. This is the perfect time of year to stay at home more and invest in family and friends rather than traveling here and there.
The average price is 2.66 per gallon.
High price 2.79 and low price 2.53. That's only a + - 5% variation from the average price.
Hardly worth raising a fuss about!
The normal practice in any properly run business is to charge the current replacement cost plus markup, not the past inventory cost plus markup. Selling inventory for less than replacement cost would be totally stupid!!
If you want to buy fuel today at a past inventory price, get your own storage tank and buy yourself 1000 gallons. Don't expect someone else to do that and sell it to you for less than they have to pay to replace what you just bought!
If you want to get fuel prices in line long term and keep them there, stop buying foreign goods. Our trade deficit is what drives the price up.
Ingles most of the time is cheaper, that has been my choice since they have put in there. Then I look next door and wonder why some people are pumping gas for .10 - .30 per gallon more!!
I am not trying to support a fuss over nothing but I do understand how fear and lack of education can cause chaos and panic. In this case, if one station raises its prices and say another follows suit than the station around those will raise their prices just to compete. This sort of "well they are doing it" mentality will only cause all stations to raise their prices.
I understand where you are coming from in terms of current replacement plus markup. You are absolutely right about that being the way to turn a profit. What I don't think you are fully considering though is that at some point raising prices will cause you to lose business thereby losing calculated revenue. The only way to combat this is raising prices yet again. It becomes a slipper slope and one that could be avoided altogether.
You yourself said "don't expect someone else to do that and sell it to you for less than they have to pay to replace what you just bought." My point exactly. Gouging is unnecessary when you are familiar with your replacement costs and a sensible profit margin.
I know people that own quite a few gas stations. Some are making about 6 cents per gallon and some are making more like maybe 25 cents per gallon like mentioned above. Quit buying from there. Everyone go to ingles and buy it.
We need a quicktrip or racetrack gas station here. They would shut down these other half butt places we have here. American owned or not. Shut them down.
From what i understand QT and Racetrack gets bids daily to get fuel pulled to their locations. Not one particular terminal.

its called free interprise folks thats what makes this country great!!if you dont like the price of gas then get a damn horse and buggy!!
1) We are not in a state of emergency which means everyone is free to charge what they like for whatever reason they like and we, the consumers, can make our decisions based on those actions.
2) Although competition and demand drive prices in our free-market economy, during a declared state of emergency Georgia law prohibits businesses from taking advantage of the situation to engage in price gouging (O.C.G.A. Sections 10-1-393.4 and 10-1-438). Under a state of emergency, state personnel and equipment may be used to help local governments, and the law’s price-gouging provisions automatically go into effect.
Businesses may not sell any goods or services necessary to protect your health, your safety or your property at prices higher than the prices at which those same goods or services were offered before the declaration of a state of emergency. This can include food, lodging, gasoline, propane gas, lumber and other supplies.
You are right, it is called free enterprise or capitalism, and we are all free to practice it. But what we must all consider is the ethical toll of our business choices. In a potential state of chaos and/or emergency, are we doing our community a service or an injustice by participating in things like price gouging? That DOES NOT make this country great. What it does is encourage (and reward) people/business owners to take advantage of others and their disposition at any given time.
I do my talking with my wallet.
By the way, the stations with the high prices today..... are they owned by the same individual(s)?
"Republicans may have called them tax credits, subsidies, permits, deregulation, or even war, but they’re all examples of intervening in the marketplace in favor of industries and companies at the expense of the free market. If you associate deficit spending with government intervention, then George W. and Ronald R were the great swelling intervenors."
I would also like to add that there has never been a successful attempt at a free market in recorded history.
Im starting to feel sorry for people like you...poor poor sheep.
Business historically has had a laizze faire attutide (French, loosely translates to 'leave us alone'), but government and society has squeezed business left and right. Some of the squeeze has been good (better working conditions, 40 hr work week), some bad (intervention usually increases the cost of doing business). For more info, you can read 'Business, Government, and Society,' the textbook for BUSA 2106.
The bottom line? The free market system works, but is not without its problems, like everything has.
But..corporations rule the world...which includes govt. I can post several examples of how govt has intervened on behalf of business dating back several years...and then you will post some more examples to the contrary. But that will not change my belief that corporations and the few elite rule all..and any system in place is set up to keep the status quo with the illusion of choice.
Also, I do not agree that the free market ALWAYS works. We have not seen an ACTUAL free market in order to make that assessment.
The free market lacks a conscience. And unregulated capitalism promotes corruption, both economic and political.
I lived in Denver then, and gas and oil was the biggest business in town at that time. I remember the difficulty finding a station with gas, sitting in long lines for an hour or more, rationing, my high school not having heat in the dead of winter, and then oil companies in downtown Denver closing, and downtown building vacancies skyrocketing.
Then the foreclosures of homes started.
If this was all because the gov't wanted to raise prices, and had tankers sitting idly for days, that's shameful.
If this is not during the same period in time, and my whole history chapter here doesn't relate, please excuse me.
I cant bevlieve that these people are still on the kick about SUVs and fumes, and gas consumption and global warming. WTH
That's just fine with me. You can pay your $350 plus a month on gas and I'll pay my $75. I'll put the extra cash away and retire early while you're still out busting your hump. As far as, fumes and enviromental issues that's completely a different problem.
Wood, coal, or oil are all the same. There will always be so many pounds CO2 released for a certain energy output. It is only the other combustion byproducts that vary.
Some of the stuff put out by the "greenies" is just silly, like the idea an electric car we plug in is "pollution free". It is only pollution free if our outlets are powered by something that does not burn fuel. Otherwise it often takes more energy and causes more CO2 than if we just ran the thing straight off gas, and it certainly causes more pollution than a self-contained hybrid. What the plug-in electric car does is shift the pollution off site and make it someone else's problem.
I tried to get the IDA people, especially Kenny Roberts and the Mayor, to understand this with their wood power plant project. What their power plant will do is concentrate CO2 produced by oxidation of carbon in all that wood here in our community. "Greenies" think that is good because if someone plants enough new trees to replace all the waste wood burned, over the life of the trees all the CO2 released here will be absorbed by the new trees and converted to oxygen. The carbon will be stored back in the trees.
The problem is we become a concentrated point for the release of CO2 that will take years to absorb back. Our local air pollution levels will increase. Apparently people deciding what is good for the community don't understand basic physics. This probably goes right to the top in our political system, and is probably one of the reasons we are in the mess we are in.
If you decided to sell your car, why should they tell you how much you can sell it for?
If you ask too much for it then people will buy one from somewhere else.
I know for 10 years it has said "b vile uggy bath" with letters crooked. They just dont care. Look how much nicer "bennies" looks since they sold it.
They wont get my business.
Nothing wrong with having a good daily driver. I think it is silly to go to homedepot and try to pull a trailer with a Prius just because you are scared to harm the environment with too much fuel being used. Bless your heart.
I mean that sounds very informative but that is too deep. We are still having extremely cold winters and the summers are nice in the high 90s here, sometimes reaching into the 100* mark. So what.
We arent breaking any winter or summer records. It been like this for years and years. The global warming thing has came out to be a huge hoax like hundreds of thousands of people knew it was.
For example. The areas of this world that is still affected from the "ice age" that is slowly melting back so that people can see what is under the ice are finding signs of life. Like areas where humans used to work with stuff and tools that they used. This tells me that there was no ice there before the ice.. DUH.
So with that being said, what was the temp of those particular areas before the "ice age" or before it all got frozen?
How do we know that it isnt supposed to be X*F in that part of the world or this part of the world.
If noone can tell you the ideal temp then why are we trying to control it?
Do you really think this world will last past the year 3000?
Not sure if you are spirtitual person but everything happens in 7s in the bible. It was mentioned over 700 times. There was 4k years before Christ and we are now heading toward the 3000 mark. Just 990 to go. Something to think about. I dont think there will be much if any change to the environment in those 900 years if it last that long. Its not like peoples lungs are gonna get burned as soon as they walk out of the house. I just dont buy into all that mess as much as others.
Five hundred million years ago carbon dioxide was 20 times more prevalent than today, decreasing to 4-5 times during the Jurassic period and then slowly declining with a particularly swift reduction occurring 49 million years ago.

Just goes to show two sides to every story!
By the way, is your last name Plumber?
If you had bought a gold watch last year for $1000, and now it is worth $1600, would you still feel compelled to sell it for $1000?
Economics 101.
$1.00 for the freaking air compressor for 20 seconds to pump up the tire. You have got to be kidding me.
I swear that if a racetrac or quick trip would open up i would never ever ever ever go back to any of these local clowns around here. I guess Victor or Darrel is trying to retire early off the dang air. Come on now. Get real
to air up your tire. Any tire shop in the area
will check the air in all your tires for free!!
If you dont like the price of something go
some place else. It's not that hard people.
Even Luther knows that.
