Walter you need to remove this! It's for teachers, students, and parents! Why would a person that doesn't have a child or grandchild in school or even work in the school system need to comment? Answer that?
As a single working father I dispise the early release 1/2 days. It's hard enough to juggle work & school with 1/2 days thrown in as well. If you have kids in Primary or Elem. their too young to spend 1/2 day alone at home. Personally I don't think the kids need a weeks vacation seemingly every month. I'd prefer a schedule where the weeks off are closer to the holidays & start school a week later in August.
I agree with you on the 1/2 days as well. Fortunately my children get bussed to my work so it's not a problem, but it's a wast of a good day. Just take out Friday all together! I also agree on the week long vacations too. Starting school later in the year and ending later is not a problem at all. There is no need to a week break in October and February. The school system would save a lot of money beginning school later in August or September and ending in June. The kids are out during the hottest part of the year and the air conditioning doesn't need to be ran. Not a fair argument I assure you, but it makes sense. If all else fails extend the Christmas vacation by a few days.
Ummm during the survey where was the option for "Non of the above" WHY ARE STUDENTS STARTING SCHOOL IN THE FIRST OR SECOND WEEK OF AUGUST!
Dr. Truby that is ridiculous. The absolute hottest part of the summer here and you have students going back to schools that have lackluster air conditioning.
Make school start back in September like the rest of the nation's schools. But the first weeks of August is absolutely unacceptable. If you want a real "suggestion" for your calender adjust one for a later start date and see how much the voting is overturned.
Dr. Truby and the school has always ask for the opinion of the community. Where were all the stadium complaining people when they had a chance to vote and have a say where the splost money went. I bet they didn't get off their rump to vote on it. They have no right to complain. So here's your chance to have another say so if you don't vote on the calendar don't complain about it when the final vote is in. This community has too many complaining non voters. The one's who do care and participate are tired of the one's who sit around and do nothing. Don't say you don't have time make time! (if you really care about YOUR community)
My daughter graduated last year from LCCHS. She appreciated the week long breaks that gave students and teachers a chance to rest and then go back to school ready to perform at a high level. However, I understand how hard it is for working parents. Often they are able to take their vacation during these breaks.
What a fortunate community we are to have Dr. Truby. He will listen to the community, his staff, and the students and make an educated decision regarding the school schedule.
My children have attended Lamar County schools for the past 11 years. And NEVER, and I mean NEVER were the parents ever asked their opinion on the school calendar. We have simply been forced to deal with it ... including when it was changed without proper notice to the public.
Many people that work a normal job don't get a lot of time off during the holiday's either so you still have to find a solution. Here's a hint if you don't want to be burded don't have kids. It is your responsibility as a parent to get daycare for your own child. Maybe the daycare centers are the ones you need to complain to. Maybe that would force them to offer similar schedules to the school system in their area. If you don't want daycare find a relative.
so i suppose it's not thanksgiving break for you either? hipacrites! it is what you make of it not what you tell people it is.... it is CHRISTMAS VACATION because you celebrate CHRISTMAS or did you miss that memo?
I would be in favor of what Florida has been doing for years - YEAR ROUND SCHOOL. The schedule is something like 10 weeks in school and 3 weeks off. Those 3 weeks can be rearranged during that 10 week period (a week here, a day there, etc.) Kids would not have to relearn material that they haven't seen in a couple of months before beginning new material. Perhaps then we could establish educational excellence with our students and their testing scores (AP, SAT, SATII, ACT).
oh my lets belittle ourselves by spell checking... amazing how people can be it's a blog, spelling correctly is voided on this end it's like txtn on ur fone n usin shrthnd
i agree. i graduated from lamar in 2005 and at the time being a teenager i hated school and loved having numerous breaks and long summers but the truth is it spoiled me and made me lazy about my school work.kids might hate the idea of year round school but now that i have children and will be sending them to lamar when they are of age i would gladly support it.aside from the breaks i hope lamar has gotten better about having year round subs and teachers that do nothing but worksheets all year,i had both of those in highschool and learned nothing in those 2 classes.
Just for clarification (for those who are math challenged). The 10/3 system would result in 4 quarters for a total of 40 weeks of school per year. That's only 4 more weeks than they do now. The students/teachers would still get off a total of 12 weeks per year.
Are you the same angry teacher that walked into a local business, cursing at the employees because of a mistake you made? What a wonderful example you set for your students!
Obviously you haven't step foot back in the schools in a long time. Worksheets are still proven to be effective, but their is more to it than that. Come on in so you can see differentiated instruction.
once again the community cannot agree on anything and must nitpick peoples comments who gives a crap how to spell the word you are one yourself for picking it apart im sure you are one of those parents who complain constantly about the school system but cant get off your butt and vote at elections participate in surveys or attend ptco meetings regardless how you spell it it is one word most commonly misspelled just like pneumonia and the other 1000 words in the english language
actually english was one of my best subjects and seeing as im out of school, what i say isnt being graded so i dont have to be proper about it if i dont want to be.the classes were a math class and a science class if you really want to know
I, the one who posted about the ignorant statement, am not the one making fun of you for having the grammatical skills of an 8 year old.
Ad hominem? Maybe. But ad hominem tu quoque.
Also, I don't have any kids. I'm a college student. I'd like to make something of myself before I throw my children into some under-staffed, state-funded bureaucratic nightmare that is the Lamar County school system.
Wow, glad my kids are Seniors and won't be subjected to Angry Teacher on a daily basis for much longer.
I wish the start date for school were later in August, that there were no October and February breaks, and that school still let out in late May or early June. However, that has not been the case since my kids have been in school, so I had to adapt to it. It would have been nice to have had some input into the calendar over the past years.
I applaud Dr. Truby for asking for community input. I don't understand why this is a problem for "Angry Teacher". Obviously, she/he has forgotten how many people without children in school pay the taxes that support school system employee salaries, etc.
So, why is there not an option that has the kids starting at the beginning of September, no
Ocotber break, no February break ... and the longer Summer break that was in place in the past???
Just what was so wrong with that schedule and why have we been trying to imitate the neighboring counties?
In a nutshell: Shorter breaks equals better retention of material learned.
Studies have consistently this to be true. A longer summer break would result in more reteaching of previously learned material before moving on to new material. There's a reason why the teachers almost NEVER finish a textbook in a given year (especially in math). If they didn't have to reteach previously learned material then perhaps they could actually finish a textbook, instead of getting only 2/3's of the way through them.
they spend the first couple weeks reviewing anyways whats the difference? they aren't suppose to go through the whole book either in a given year. we started school the day after labor day, had an extended weekend for thanksgiving, 2 weeks off at christmas, a spring break in late march early april, and ended school at the end of june... that is still the recommended 8 weeks off for summer just like they get now...
It's opinions like yours that keeps Georgia at the bottom of education in the United States (49th at last review). I homeschool my children and we ALWAYS finish a textbook before moving on to the next one (and, yes, it does make a difference).
i think you misinterpreted that comment... if you read the comment above it you will get why... i am sorry you feel that way it's not just my opinion i was raised in the public school system and as i recall the first couple of weeks back we always reviewed before taking on new material... unfortunately i don't have the privilege of home schooling my children or sending them to private school, but i survived public school and had no problems going on to college or establishing a great job, i think we put too much emphasis on the fact that our children should learn more in a lesser amount of time... so maybe you are right it does make a difference but you must have the teachers that are willing to make that difference... and when i was in school we didn't always finish a text book from front to back... sure we touched on the subjects but that is what the next year is for... i am sorry i struck a cord with you, i value my children and their education we review every night the stuff they learn that day and for the end of the week tests... so think and read before judging a comment there maybe more to it...

It's unfortunate some people really know nothing about the world around them.
'hipacrites' is not shorthand..it is completely misspelled. same number of letters, just the wrong ones :)
