Hi, Joe is my Uncle. When I first heard it on the news, I was in shock! I would've never thought someone would do that! I love my Uncle very much. We usually go to family reunions together! I'm so glad he's okay and we get to spend time as a family! Although we're going to miss Aunt Barbara, she just recently past away today. Barbara Buford is Joe's sister. I'm going to miss her! I love Uncle Joe!
i do not personally know joe, but i work with someone close to the family, and from what she has said, he is an AMAZING man. loving, caring, and would go beyond the call of duty. (as he has done) Welcome home and GOD'S SPEED!
I saw Joe on the news tonight, and I was elated he was getting to go home. I know he will be up and about in no time. His recovery is the answer to alot of prayers.
Joe, so glad that you were not injured more severely. I hope you have a speedy recovery, so that I may visit with you. The good Lord was watching after you. See you soon.
-Media sock puppet term "assault rifle", even though that is incorrect unless the weapon is select fire/full auto. The weapons involved here were not FA. None of the officers involved would be alive if they were.
-"AK-47", which is incorrect for anything other than a full auto rifle chambered in 7.62mm. Print edition says Buice was shot with ".223". AK clones are not available in that caliber. Russian 5.45mm would be the smaller round version.
-"armor piercing" rounds. Another media sock puppet term. Military "ball" rounds are full metal jacket and non expanding. Steel or tungsten core. Actual AP rounds are difficult to find and thus expensive.
"Hollow point" rounds are considered "inhuman" by the Hague Convention(...Google) for military use. Had Buice been shot by 7.62 hollow point, he would be dead with a closed casket service. Have a look at what 7.62 FMJ does to clay at the link below.

Scoop, you have people in your readership that own these weapons. If you are going to toss around sensationalist terms incorrectly-expect to be called on it. Accurate reporting means fact checking and not simply mindless quoting to forward an agenda.
Ok so they were "assault-style" weapons. Had they been full-auto, he would have ran them dry before accurately placing a round. Thus, giving the deputies the opportunity to respond appropriately. As for the AP, Ball, HP.... if it had been a hollow point round, it would have expanded, as it is designed to do, upon contact with and transferred its energy to the vehicle and not punched through striking Deputy Buice. The fact is Joe survived a horrendous incident no matter the terminology. Wishing you a speedy recovery Joe!
OK so they were "assault-style" weapsons. Had they been full-auto, he would have ran them dry before accurately placing a round thus giving the deputies the opportunity to respond appropriately. One well placed round is far more effective than 100 randomly sprayed in a few seconds. As for armor piercing, ball, hollow point... had the round been hollow point it would have performed as designed; expanding and transferring its energy to and remaining with the vehicle's construction instead of punching through and striking Deputy Buice. The fact is that Joe survived a horrendous incident no matter the style of the rifle projectile fired upon him! God Bless you Joe and I wish you a speedy recovery!
irregardless of all the "technical" crap, the point is, an officer was shot by a crazy man who should have never had any type of automatic or semi automatic weapon. And whether or not the ammo was armor piercing, i still agree with Joe that there should be some law passed to issue officers better protective gear. Joe is and always has been a man of his word. You can bet he stands behind everything he says and believes in. And if he's your friend he's your friend, and if you break the law he has a job to do, but he's still your friend. That's one thing that makes him stand out from the rest. I pray you have a quick recovery and are soon back to work Mr. Joe!
Saiga has been making AK-clones in .223, .30-06, 7.62x39mm, 5.45x39mm, .308 Winchester, 9x53R, and 5.6х39mm for years and, even though buying them stock will only make them look halfway Kalashnikov, it only takes ~$50 to make it look spot on.
I ultimately agree with your post, just correcting your statement.
You people kill my soul. Who cares about the firearm or what type it was, they all kill and were designed to do so. A 22 cal. kills more people than any other weapon. The fact is an officer was shot in the line of duty, regardless of who that officer is and it is like Joe said, you know this when you put the badge on. It is a risk they all take, as I have in the past. I know Joe has had his differences with people in the past, but one cannot say he did not do his job as an officer. Maybe it is time to slow down Joe. Take time for your family.
That is right. Why would the media report "assault weapons" instead of just saying that " former Lamar county sheriff, Joe Buice, was shot in the line of duty apon arriving at the scene..............bla bla bla".
The term assault weapon is a more aggressive term that makes the guns look like some terrible terroristic weapon that has been imported through the underground or black market. These things are available anywhere and everywhere. They are 100% within the restrictions that the govnt has in place. When law enforcement shoots someone with one of their M14 or what ever type of tactical weapon some of the special force officers have, the media dont report that they killed the suspect with an assault weapon. Its the same thing. The only thing you cant buy is class 3 firearms. (well you can buy them but there is a good bit of money that has to be spent for a tax stamp for each weapon).
The often misused term "armor piercing" is an attention-getter in the newspaper world, and it serves its purpose, inaccurate or no.
That being said, I have to add the following:
Any center-fire rifle cartidge you can imagine, from .243 to .50 BMG can seriously be considered "armor piercing" when you look at the facts. Body armor is only effective against rifle fire at longer ranges, after the muzzle velocity of the round has dropped to a point that the armor can stop it. At anything under 50 meters, just about any rifle is deadly against armor light enough to be able to move in.
This is not to say that body armor cannot be made proof against high velocity, high powered rifle cartridges, because it certainly can, but the price of that protection is severely decreased mobility.
All the hoopla about "armor piercing assault rifles of mass destruction" is just muddying the waters, and could easily be dropped without losing any newsworthiness.
Um, you obviously have way too much time on your hands, who in their right mind would put that much unecessary info on a comment blog regarding the recovery of someone?! Mind your own business, glad your ok Joe!!!
I think most people are getting away from the point here. Joe was shot in the line of duty and no officer deserves that. I am glad he is Ok and I will comtinue to pray for him and his family.
Doesn't take long for the fools to come out. Too many unbalanced idiots are allowed to own any gun they want. End of topic.
Joe, congratulations on being home and people are pulling for you and wishing you the best. Its a shame officers have to put themselves in front of weapons like that owned by mentally unhinged people.
I believe the point that these others were trying to make centered around the inaccuracies that often find their way into the media, especially the TV reports. Did anyone notice the round that the reporter displayed on TV several times. That was neither 223 or 7.62.
But I do agree with you.... Get well soon Joe. This world needs more men like you. I only dealt with Joe once while he was Sheriff. My son was attacked by a dog and Joe came to the house himself. He talked to us for quite a while, went and took care of the animal himself (found it and held it for animal control), and then came back in person to tell us that we would not be bothered by that dog again. The next week he called the house himself to check on my son. That kind of service means alot to us.

Actually, other blog posts were in place to express your feelings about Buice and the incident. The anti gun media tries hard to use these incidents to sway public opinion about gun control.
This same media would have us believe they are striving to the utmost for accurancy and truthfulness. Throwing sensationalist terms around inaccurately does not works with this new media. Readers can call you out on your agenda driven drivel. Breathless use of terms like "AK-47", when it wasn't, "armor piecing bullets" when they are aren't, "assault rifle" when it is not, won't pass muster in this new venue.
I was once told that a good way to gauge the veracity of what you are reading/watching with the media is to observe what they say about something you know about. That is on full display here with these blog posts.
What is the big deal about the type of wepon used ( who cares) I think the point is that Mr. Buice survived and the shooter was dealt with accordingly. Welcome Home Joe !!!1

What gun could have prevented Joe from getting shot. Water gun?
