Lamar Arts is celebrating Black History Month by hosting a very special event called “Roots”. We encourage you to attend the opening this Friday, February 5th, from 6-8 pm at the Depot in Downtown Barnesville.

Also featured in the exhibition is a featuring the Rosenwald Schools. The Rosenwald Schools were elementary schools built by Julius Rosenwald to educate black children throughout the south.

I couldn't agree more. How can it be 'fair' to allow one race or nationality to have such celebrated events but cry foul when another group wants to have their own. During BLACK History Month we and especially our children in the public schools have black history, black heritage, and black everything else shoved down our throats whether we care about it or not. Should someone dare even mention having a White History Month or a Hispanic History Month, or an Oriental History Month, or a Middle Eastern History Month (if I left any group out I apologize) they are immediately branded as a racist and a trouble maker. Civil rights organizations get up in arms and march at the suggestion of anything predominently white but white people are expected to sit quietly and smile while all things black are lauded in their faces. If you can't allow ALL races / nationalities / beliefs to hold such events then no one should be allowed to.
I'm trying very hard to be polite and not be racist here but I have to say that personally I am sick and tired of the whole thing. My 8th grade child comes home and tells how his (black) teacher sent him to the office for mentioning the Confederacy during a recent 'lesson' on the Civil War. This is just plain wrong and it's time for it to stop.

White history month does not exist because the entire year is spend discussing it. We still need black history month because it has taken over 200 years to finally have a President in office that was not an old white man. And people were angry the DAY he was elected without even giving him the benefit of the doubt..and not because he was democrat. There was no tea party movement when Clinton was in office for 8 years. This is the society in which we still live.

I have to agree totally with you... I actually think racisim continues because we allow this to go on..I believe if we quit black this and black that, then we would start being able to live together instead of haveing it shoved on us, then if we do say something we are racist...
To tell you the truth I believe the black race keeps racism going..They will always hold something over our heads...

FYI we as BLACKS celebrate Febuary as Black History month to let our children be educated on profounding inventions and events that blacks have accomplished over the years,it is the shortest month of the year for the rest of the eleven months we celebrate white history it is shoved down our children throats whether we care about it or not and we are tired of it this is just plain wrong and it's time for it to stop. And by the way since yall appear to be in control share some of yall 11 months, with the Hispanic, Oriental, and Middle Eastern oh I forgot the president is BLACK so yall aren't in control we are:)!!

You said, "We as blacks..." I thought you were African-American? I am Irish-American, "Top of the Morning to you." When the black people become American.....instead of African-American.. that is when racism stands a chance to end. While you are educating your children about their past, be sure and show them the modern day Africa they could be living in....had it not been for their Great, Great, Great Grandparents that suffered but procreated through slavery. They could be those African children in pictures of malaria infested, starving, fly bait that the TV shows when they are begging for money. I do believe I would be thanking God for slavery if I were an American Black Citizen. I am sure you will say you are proud of your Heritage, good for you...then quit griping about it. How do you figure that the other 11 months of the year are spent discussing white history? I've been out of school for over 25 years, and the history I learned was just that...History. Not white history, not black history, but history in general.

History is written from the perspective of the writer. It was written long before you and I were born. I agree that blacks have done historical things, and years ago this history was overlooked. But society should move forward, and I believe that today our history is being written with regard to WHO made it, not what color they are, and therefore should be taught as such. For you to believe that white history is taught the other 11 months just shows that you are holding on to that ax to grind. Let it go. We all must move forward.

Our president is as much white as he is black, unless you are saying he's black based on his pigmentation. If so, then Michael Jackson was the best white recording artist ever. Also, the President can't get anything done without Congress (haven't you noticed?), whether he is white, black, or whatever. So who's really in control? Quit power trippin'.

To #7, quit it with the race card. Clinton didn't spend a trillion dollars in his first year as President, Obama did. That is the basis for the tea party movement And besides, the tea party isn't against just Democrats. They are against ALL legislators that are spending us into oblivion. Know your facts.

In addition, it took over 200 years for someone "that is not an old white man" to get elected because of the POSITIVE changes toward race. He had far more white votes than black votes, due to the fact that there are more whites in America than blacks. So once again, let go of the crutch.

I so tire of hearing crap like this. When will blacks join the American race? The main ingredient to racism is poured in daily from so called African Americans. Many blacks are convinced that they are held back by whites; which is so far from the truth that is laughable. Blacks have exactly the same rights that I have will a little extra advantage poured on top. I huge number of so called African Americans have no roots to Africa but accept the title because of their skin color.

How about some advice? Climb out of the past and stop with all the self pity and join Americans in a fight to save the United States. Start being Americans!

Shelia you missed the whole picture no one is talking about slavery but since you want to discuss it yes we have been called nigga,negro,colored,black and African Americans none of these labels would exist to us if the white man would have left us in Africa, I have you to know that Africa is not all of the disease stricken poverished country that you see on tv it rich and as far as I and my children are concerned what God has for me it is for me it was never his intention for me or my kids to be in Africa, and yes God bless the Native American, America truly belongs to them anyway everyone else is just an immigrant!! A few Black Inventions:
The traffic light, peanut butter,bleach,chili sauce, instant coffee,linoleum, mayonaise,the ironing board,the first street sweeper truck,the electrical resistor used in computers,radios,tv's, and other eletrical devices,the first blood bank, electrical railways,air brakes, and my favorite the Super Soaker,and still used to save lives today peformance of the open heart surgery, a few things that I am educating my children on but Shelia don't get it twisted they are well informed of the past as well as the present so that they won't feel inferior to people such as yourself who would complain about something as small as celebrating Black History Month , We are not the same generation of blacks that you may know of WELCOME TO AMERICA oh by the way OUR PRESIDENT IS BLACK since yall don't want to consider his white half we'll take him:)!!

Shelia do you check Irish American when you signing up for you Social Security or disability check, food stamps or medicaid I think not you check WHITE so stop trying to make a big deal about whether its Black or African American the month celebrated is called Black History Month not African American History month. Wow I don't recall blacks ever being mad because the last 43 presidents won because they were white, we just go with the flow, some things whites are not going to understand just because you're not black, racism is an ongoing battle in this great country we call America so things like celebrating being able to sit in the front of the bus, eat in a resturant with whites,vote,go to school and church with whites, celebrate Black History month, date outside our race,elect the first black president means alot to us but the blogs on this site reminds us that we have came along way but still have a ways to go, We are a chosen people and GOd's grace and mercy has endured us and will continue to- God Bless You all!

No I am not Walter, Sweetie. I have been a slave all my life if it means working from birth. My Mother share cropped for our neighbor for food from the garden to feed us three children. That is after her shift in the Martha Mill, pulling doubles when she could.I would take nothing for my rough childhood. It taught me that "life does not come free." Everyone is "something American" except the Native Americans. It simply means your ancestors came from some other country many years ago. Chill out and enjoy the Superbowl. Go Saints!

Just because a person is highly educated doesn't make the person fit for some jobs. A grad from MIT with and engineering degree doesn't make the person fit in a job as a lawyer. On the other hand, A grad from Harvard with a law degree doesn't make the person fit in a job as President of the United States. Although both are highly educated, they just aren't capable of doing the job.

Obama may make a good lawyer but he's a poor excuse for president. All the excuses and explanations in the world is not going to change that. And it's shameful that we as a country will have to be driven to the brink of total collapse before most people will see it. Some never will.

As for hope and change - Adolph Hitler promised the same thing.

I don't care for Obama's "change" and I can only "hope" I'm wrong about the collapse of the US. I "hope" we will still have time to save ourselves.

Jeff Skilling, who was convicted in May of masterminding a massive accounting fraud at Enron, has one. So does E. Kirk Shelton, the former vice chairman of Cendant who was found guilty last year of fabricating earnings at the company.

What do these men, former titans of the new economy, have in common besides being snared by federal investigations into securities fraud? They have MBA degrees from Harvard.

Going to Harvard is not enough to qualify him as smart. However, being a Harvard Scholar is...

What most people do not understand is that he is STILL cleaning up after Bush. If you think the country started off with a new slate once the man was elected then you dont understand basic logic, critical thinking and cause and effect. Also take a class on economics, history and politics. If you get your information from sources such as your friends, pastor, Fox news or anyone else...do your OWN thinking (if possible).
If I am in debt and there is no money coming in, it may take me longer than a year to dig myself out of a hole. Now imagine something as complicated as our economy.

Just remember one thing..... Bush had the highest approval ratings in presidential history up until 2005. Wonder what happened in 05 that changed that??? Oh yeah, we elected a democratic house and the economy took a turn for the worse. Any steps Bush tried to take to help the economy was shot down by the democrats because they weren’t about to see Bush do anything that made him look good (even if it hurt America). Obama on the other hand walked into a dream. He has been surrounded by democrats and could get anything he wanted through congress but so far has only made our current economic situation worse. But better times are ahead because America is finally waking up, for the most part. By the way, I never once accused a black person of being a racist for not supporting Bush and I don’t appreciate being called one just because I don’t agree with all of Obama’s decisions.

Democrats don't understand tax cuts. That is one reason we have rising unemployment. Democrats think tax cuts put money in the rich people’s pockets. They are still going to pay taxes on what they make along with the millions of people that tax cuts provided jobs to. You see - tax cuts create jobs which put more on the pay instead of take line.
