When a major earthquake hit Haiti, missionaries from Rock Springs Global Outreach knew exactly what they needed to do: help.
Preparations by mission leader Don Mapp and his crew began the Friday after the quake hit. Also on the mission were paramedic Jon Baker, Rock Springs middle school pastor J.T. Sutton and Jackie Wharam, pastor of Bay Branch Primitive Baptist Church in Claxton.
"It was a task just to get there," said Mapp, also a paramedic with Mid-Georgia Ambulance. "We ran into roadblock after roadblock."

Rock Springs Global Outreach...How about a Rock Springs Lamar Outreach group? I know Rock Springs is active in the community, but I don't see them helping to "rebuild" down Mill St, Ice St, ect. Around 18% of Lamar is under the poverty line according to recent census.
If we take the population count of 16,961 as of 2007, thats something like 3,052 people that need our help HERE.
I love the fact that Americans are so eager to help 3rd world countries, but help those at home too.
What these guys did was out of love from their own heart not just for other nations, and other people, but they would help ANYONE.
The town they went to had received NO AID, and they where the first AID to get there. Many of the villagers they saw would of lost limbs due to infections, but because they got there in time, they saved lives.
As for people in the states. There is all kind of government aid/help. Food stamps, fire stations around the corner, Ambulances in the area. They have help. What did those kids have in Haiti, nothing, they lost their orphanage, and their shelter.
What do they have we don't. A desire to want to learn, and hear God's word.
We take for granted all that we have. We go to school and disrespect our leaders and act as if they owe us something. But those kids over their want it.
Maybe we should take a step back and re-evaluate our life's.
God bless..
As I have my own opinion of the crookedness that goes on around Rock Springs (Rudy Vaughn anyone) this comment was more directed to the millions upon millions upon millions that is being dumped into the hands of the leaders of Haiti, with no intention of this money getting where it's supposed to.
My post was in regards to the Americans that are being detained in Haiti and the Haitian government telling American leaders to mind their own business as they try to get them out of jail for doing this humanitarian work.
My post is directed to all the celebrities that want this positive lime light by throwing a few hundred thousand to Haitian aid while the figures of Lamar County alone would make you sick to think about how many Americans suffer everyday.
My post is directed to the self-centered individuals that only see this as a way to make themselves feel a little better as they talk to their friends "Hey did you text Red Cross and donate $10? Well I did."
Its like someone said in the earlier post regarding this. People helping local people doesnt get publicity, therefore no one wants to step up. Every week there is community project meetings begging individuals to get involved...usually these meetings close with the same 3-4 people organizing it.
That's what my post is directed at. And if you can't see the problem with this then maybe you need to sit back and re-evaluate your life.
Of the approximate 5,800,000 people living in Atlanta, 22% are below poverty...thats about 1,256,000 people that need assistance...in Atlanta alone.
Anyone else see how this number keeps growing of Americans that need help?
the same thing happened with the katrina crap.everybody rushed to help all these people rebuild their homes and were quick to jump infront of the tv cameras but not one single time did i see any of these churches helping someone who had lost their business rebuild it!
We are supposed to work when we can, help those in true need (not lazy welfare people who are able to work but too sorry to give off their bums) and work together to improve the community where we live.
WHY help Haiti? We don't live there, their problems are their own. We need to help LAMAR COUNTY. We have too many seniors cold, where are the old timey quilting bees??? We have too many children hungry, where's the Churches handing out snacks at the park FOR FREE?????
Yes, send 10 dollars to Haiti, they do need help. But then send 20 to Lamar County! Not in a monetary way, but in a way that can truly help. So many Churches with big buildings, get the kids off the streets! Give them some recreation!
And not just kids who go to YOUR Church, but all children of ALL colors.
Ladies, pick up a sewing needle, or do you even know how to sew? Sew quilts, pillows, crochet sweaters, knit afghans....I bet more than 90% of the women (and men) in the area don't even know how to sew a decent dress, that's sad.
Oh I forgot, todays society is also dependant on wal-mart and mass produced goods that tear up after a few washings. NOTHING beats a handmade article of clothing or quilt that is made to last after decades of washing.
As I said, yes help Haiti, but don't forget to look out your back door and see what it is you can do to help improve your very own neighborhood before it becomes another Haiti, like Detroit has become!
The people of Barnesville living in poverty have had the same chance that every American has. That is to get an education and get a job.
