President expected to announce Georgia nuclear loan guarantees today

President Barack Obama is expected to announce loan guarantees today for the construction and operation of two new nuclear reactors in Georgia, the first new nuclear power plant to break ground in the United States for nearly three decades.

Loan guarantees will apply to work at the Southern Co. plant in Burke, where Georgia Power is planning the new reactors at its Plant Vogtle facility. Southern Co. estimates the project will create 3,000 onsite construction jobs and about 850 permanent positions.

Let's build one here. Potato Creek has plenty of water now and it's probably enough to cool a medium sized nuclear reactor. If we build it on the Pike County side and it blows up, we ain't lost much.

I always thought the downfall of nuclear power was getting rid of the radioactive waste. I remember a few years ago (probably 10 yrs ago now), SC was blocking the nuclear waste removal trucks from driving on their highways or something like that. Is getting rid of the waste from nuclear power not a legitimate concern anymore?

Not nearly enough to meet the electrical needs of the state.

Plant Scherer burns 40,000 tons of coal every 24 hours. The entire state could have be covered in solar panels to equal that output capacity.

Meanwhile, the Dems in Congress have killed the nuclear waste facility at Yucca Mountain. Where will we store waste that is hazardous for 250,000 years...?

Well, we have all heard that Obama is going back in campaign mode so I guess this is the democrats tactics back at work. Anybody who disagrees with Obama's horrible policies are called racist and members of the KKK. Sorry cake buddy, it worked the first time around because most people weren't aware this was part of their campaign plan...now that we know that the chants of racism are just Obama political tactics, it won't work again. Keep it up though, it fires up conservatives to work even harder to vote out the true radicals in our country...the democrats.

All the name calling in the world isn't going to keep these people from having their voices heard come Nov. I see the media's strategy has shifted from attacking Sarah Palin and Bush to the Tea Party'ers. The memo has been sent through the liberal ranks "denounce tea party'ers at any given chance" just like they did with Bush. For those who care, this is "The Rules for Radicals" playbook in action. Pick somebody or something and polarize it. The real question before us is not whether or not they care what you think Tea Party stands for but if they will fall for this minipulative tactic to control America. Unfortunately for the democrats I think the American public is on to them but we will know for sure in November.
