Er, um, slowing tickets in Georgia?

A bill that sets a minimum fine for driving too slow in the passing lane on Georgia interstates and highways raced through a committee of the Georgia House yesterday afternoon.

Members of the House Transportation Committee voted unanimously to send HB1047 to the House Rules Committee. The Rules Committee will decide in the next few weeks whether to send the bill to the full House for a vote.

My dad, the cop, taught me years ago to stay out of the left lane on the freeway unless I absolutely had to reason to be there.
So, you won't catch me there even if I'm going 75 m.p.h, which on
I-75 is just too freaking slow as you head thru Atlanta.
But I doubt our lawmakers are concerned with our safety. I stopped believing they care about us years ago.
This is to generate more revenue, in my humble opinion.

This will be very difficult to enforce so why have the law?
Even in the right hand lane on I-285 anybody only going 55 MPH (which is the speed limit) is at risk of being run over by an 18 wheeler.

This has been a long time coming. They have talked about this plenty of times and it deserves to be looked into. I agree with the first poster, you shouldn't be in the left lanes unless you are passing people in the right lane. As long as you are continually passing cars in the left lane you are fine, but I'm seen so many drivers get in the middle lane and drive 60mph. When you've got other drivers coming from behind doind at least 70 in the same lane, they start passing the car to the right and left making a dangerous situation.

Love the idea. It's only common sense for slow drivers to keep right and drivers continuously refuse to follow this rule. It makes no sense that someone not even driving the speed limit is in the fast lane not allowing others to pass. Maybe if drivers are aware that if they are not going the speed limit in the passing lane then they will get a ticket then the roads will be safer. I'm not condoning speeding, I'm just saying that slower drivers need to stay in their respective lanes.

Yahoo...I think this will be a great law. I hate when people are in the fast lane going slow...blocking traffic for miles sometimes. Especially the people who like to ride side by side someone in the slow lane.

Now we are ticketing people for inconvenience? What a world we live in. All about the money. Maybe we should ticket the people in the grocery store that use 500 coupons and take forever to write a check.
This is the sort of government interference we do NOT need. Way to go republicans.

There is already a law in place that says that cant travel less than the posted speed limit while in the fast lane.
They also should inforce "slower traffic keep right" on the interstate systems. People from florida are the worlds worst. They will travel I-75 at 63mph in the center lane with plenty of room to get over in the slow lane but refuse to. Tractor trailers are restricted to the right two lanes. Get your butt over. If I could pass you in the hammer lane i would.

maybe you should look into using coupons too. We get about $200 worth of groceries for 70-100 bucks. Why not do it? We have went to CVS or Walgreens and got 75 dollars worth of stuff for $8 or $15. I can scan you a copy of a receipt if you dont believe me.

That’s why you see the see the sign on the right shoulder that reads "KEEP RIGHT EXCEPT TO PASS", I interpret that to mean "NO CRUISING IN THE LEFT LANE" too fast or slow. No need for new laws just enforce what’s already been written.

Hey, I do this too! I use 'thegrocerygame.com' and save LOTS. I recently spent 41.00 on 210.00 worth of groceries. And at walgreens, spent $4.00 on 25$ worth of stuff.
Another time, they OWED me $13.00 when I bought a razor!!

There are already 2 enforcable laws on the books regarding this. The first is the state law that requires you to "Keep right except to pass" The other is "Slower traffic keep right" What you see on the black and white signs on public roadways are statutory, and are legally enforcable.

40-6-184 ... this law is already in effect. What difference is this new one they are trying to get passed? According to this article there is no difference. Is this new one making it where there is a minimum speed on any road?

I was thinking the laws that are in effect now are enforceable but doesn't really matter because all law enforcement can do is give you a ticket that's like a warning. There is no fine. Now more people will take these laws more seriously because they will know that if they get caught not going the speed limit in the passing lane that they will get a $75 ticket.

The focus "has" been on speeding. See what happens next time you are caught going 85 MPH on an interstate Hwy. An extra $200 is what happens. That's on top of what you already get fined. My speedometer measures to 140 MPH I wonder why?

Hey, how about they start ticking those drivers that tail gate, if you really want to do something. I mean, when if someone is going 65 MPH in a 75 MPH zone, and someone runs right up on their bumper, who is really the bigger problem?

I can't see the need for a crazy law like this. If someone in front of you is going too slow then 1) you are going to fast and/or 2) you can go around.

The question on laws governing traffic should always be is the behavior a detriment or danger. This silly law fails on both of those categories. This is yet one more pointless, useless, practically unenforceable laws.

Big time FAIL to the legislature for this waste of time.

you are the bigger problem by doing 65 in a 75 zone if you arent all the way over in the far right lane. You are hindering the flow of traffic. There are signs everywhere that says "slower traffic keep right". People from Florida are the worlds worst about traveling in the middle lane. They are scared to death to get in the right lane. Notice what im talking about next time you are out on the road. I see it every night.

Where is there a 75 mph zone

Top speed on the interstate is 70 mph and on state highways top speed is 55 mph

A person going slower than the flow in faster lanes causes all kinds of grief for others. It creates an effect called synchronous traffic flow. It can cause a "pinch effect" that is like a rolling roadblock, forcing others to get stuck in a slug of slow or stopped traffic even when the road should have been able to handle a much faster flow. No one is safer for that and it can cause a jam that takes hours to go away.

Why are people in such a hurry to die

You have no reason at all to drive 80 to 90 mph

What if you hit your mother or child and cause them to be burned alive.

THINK ABOUT THAT THE NEXT TIME YOU ARE DRIVING.

If it was me that hit and killed your loved one you would want me to be locked up for life or the death sentence imposed.
