In what is becoming an all too familiar strategy, the Georgia Department of Education recommended yesterday to shorten the school year to help schools cope with budget cuts next year.
The Georgia Department of Education says with state funding cuts likely to be above A BILLION DOLLARS, schools should have the flexibility to cut teacher instructional days which would shorten the school year.

Good article HG.
Georgia Lottery proceeds are used to fund specific education programs:
1) With a "B" average, Georgia students may qualify for Georgia's HOPE scholarships that may be used at eligible public and private colleges and universities and public technical colleges for tuition, mandatory fees, and book allowances; for tuition assistance for undergraduate students and paraprofessionals who aspire to be teachers; and for tuition assistance to teachers who seek advanced degrees in critical areas of need;
2) The Georgia Prekindergarten Program for all 4-year-olds; and
3) capital outlay projects including computer and other technological upgrades for schools, technical institutes, colleges and universities in the state.
I also feel strongly that instead of raising taxes for those of us who work hard every day and yet continue to struggle from paycheck to paycheck, salaries should be cut beginning at the top with Obama and the senators and representatives and then going down through state government, etc.
When so many people are out of work because of the poor economy, I would like to know what all those government officials are sacrificing. They are so eager to implement furlough days for teachers, police officers, fire fighters and others, are they taking furlough days themselves? When they suggest pay cuts for the working class, are they taking pay cuts themselves? I think not, and I believe the pay cuts and furloughs should start at the top.
So, why drop down to a 4-day work week?
Let me first point to my own agenda: carbon offset and reduction in oil reliance.
The math, as I see it, goes as thus:
133,000,000 workers X 80% who drive alone = 106,400,000 single driver commuter cars each day.
106,400,000 X 32 miles round trip = 3,404,800,000 miles driven to work each day
3,404,800,000 / 21 mpg (average fuel efficiency) = 162,133,333 gallons of gasoline each day
Each barrel of crude oil produces, on average, 19.5 gallons of gas. (It is important to note that other products like kerosene and asphalt are produced from that same barrel.)
162,133,333 / 19.5 = 8,314,530 barrels of oil each day.
What does that mean though? Reduction (5-10% and perhaps even more) in the amount of oil consumed Monday through Friday simply by rearranging our work week.
A few other reasons to drop down to a 4-day work week?
The 4-day work week would mean less traffic congestion.
Rush hour exists because everyone needs to get to work at about the same time. Anyone who's lived in a city of size can tell you that early in the morning and late in the afternoon the roads fill up. The average 16 mile commutes takes 26 minutes each way. That's 52 minutes a day traveling at roughly 35 miles per hour. Imagine if 1/5 of the cars suddenly disappeared? If the work week was staggered so that 1/5 of all workers took a different day off, the U.S. commuter would see a 20% reduction in rush hour congestion without building a single new road.
The 4-day work week would reduce money spent on new road construction and existing road maintenance.
With 1/5 few cars making the commute each day, fewer new road projects would be necessary and existing roads would last longer with less maintenance. This is not to say that we shouldn't take advantage of this cost savings to invest in alternative transportation systems. In fact it's the opposite. This could be a gift to the tax payer who would receive new and better options for travel without any rise in taxes.
The 4-day work week would reduce absenteeism in the workplace.
The 4-day work week would increase productivity.
In 1930 famed cereal maker W.K. Kellog had this to say about his decision to decrease his companies work week from 40 to 30 hours.
The efficiency and morale of our employees is so increased, the accident and insurance rates are so improved, and the unit cost of production is so lowered that we can afford to pay as much for six hours as we formerly paid for eight.
The 4-day work week would give us more time with family.
In fact, 60% of Americans claim they do not have enough time for family. We work more hours than any nation on the planet. But why do we work? We work to support our families. But is more money and material objects really supporting our families or simply allowing for a smokescreen? The FDA released a report two years ago that stated 7 out of 10 teenage pregnancies are conceived at the home of a young girl between the hours of 3pm and 5pm. Perhaps if we focused less on buying our daughters a sweet 16 car we could simply invest a little more time in her growth and development.
The 4-day work week would decrease operational costs.
Thing energy savings, security savings, maintenance savings, cleaning services, etc.
I think the Georgia legislature ought to seriously rethink its strategy of slash and burn when it comes to education.
Also, I think the new proposal to base teachers salaries on the success of the students is a bunch of crap. What if you were a teacher in Clayton Co or dekalb or heck Lamar or Monroe for that matter. You have certain classes that are full of a bunch of idiots. Their parents let them run buck wild and sell drugs out of their house. Cuss in front of them and all kinds of stuff. They think it is the schools responsibility to raise their child for them. Out of a class of 28 people what if 8 of them really wanted to do the right thing. A salary shouldnt be based on that. The teacher delivers the lesson and explains it and the rest is on the child and parent.
This is what it has come to. What if Georgia schools start doing this too?
When brought back down to the local level, there will be less waste on tax dollars, because it'll be much easier to hold "County" officials accountable on how and where the money is spent.
And I bet Teachers, officers etc. would get much better pay, imagine trying to pay someone as much as Perdue makes, that kind of crap would not be allowed.
I also say change GA law to where the position of "Governor" is a community position also, volunteer only, no pay....the only perk would be getting to live in the Governor Mansion. Then we'd know anyone who runs for Govermor isn't in it for the money.
I'm sorry to rant on about this but I've had enough. Start teaching my children how to survive in today's society instead of how to pass a test. The 10 days won't matter at this point because after the CRCT is taken there is no 'teaching', only movies, and parties, and field days, etc.... so cut out the days that my children aren't actually learning anything and save some of my tax money.
Governor - $135,281 - Sonny Perdue
Lieutenant Governor - $88,941
Secretary of State - $120,036
State Attorney General - $133,778
State Treasurer - $126,500
Right here in Barnesville the IDA director makes $100K a year, and Kenny Roberts makes at least that much. I wouldn't worry about the Governor when we have waste like that locally.
The reason there is so much hype for CRCT testing is that the better the scores, the MORE MONEY the schools get.
Teachers will not tell you this, but they have specific things to teach the kids now. THey can't teach what they want.
They have to sign contracts , a gag order, stating they will not make public the bad thigns about all this, all thanks to the NCLB law.
All they can teach now is what is on these stupid tests. They even teach HOW to take the tests! Just look in a school book, it's all in there.
Schools are cheating on these tests so they can GET MORE MONEY.
What does it tell you about education and teachers today- they give the answers to the CRCT tests ALL YEAR LONG, this is ALL they do. And the kids STILL can't pass the tests? What is up with that??
They need to scrap the whole NCLB thing and let teachers teach.
I would love to see teachers comments here about all this.
HOMESCHOOL !!!!!!!!!!!!!
