A GBI official has confirmed his agents got involved in an investigation that led to the arrest of former LCSO captain Grier Smith at the request of sheriff Larry Waller.
Grier Smith and a grenade of the type he allegedly taped to an inmate's neck in 2007. Smith says his arrest is all about politics.

and to the person who said the sheriff had nothing to do with initiating this investigation in the last thread on this story...how you like me now???
Even if this is politically motivated as some say...who cares. If Grier Smith did this to an inmate, then he should be punished. I don't think an internal investigation by the former sheriff could be deemed fair or unbiased. In the least it would look like JB didn't have control of his employees. Was the GBI or any outside agency contacted by Buice when this event happened? Simple question.
Having the GBI conduct the investigation was a great idea, because that way the same people on here fussing about politics would be able to give a great political argument if the Sheriff's office conducted the investigation.
It seems people on here want it both ways. Bottom line is if a law was broken just because Grier had a badge doesn't give him immunity from the law. No matter who the Sheriff was or is they should have called the GBI in to investigate, an outside source is always the best move.
Besides, why drag this up now. The alledged incident occured what? two years ago? Waller has been in office over a year and is just now bring it up? Obviously he has some agenda other than enforcing the law here.
I'm not covering for Smith. If he did this and is guilty, he should be punished. However, as someone eloquently said in an earlier thread, punish him on the crime's merit NOT to satisfy your own appetite for power.
"vindictive, power monger who will stop at nothing to destroy the lives of those who oppose him and stand in his way" says it all
Do you know when LCSO requested investigation? Do you know how long request sat at GBI before investigation started? Do you know how long the GBI's actual investigation took?
Indeed! Go...away! Why the voters here thought "bringing back" this guy was a good idea is a mystery to me.
Past performance predicts future performance. The actions of this man in this office are living proof of this.
Thanks Milner for the 90 votes that "brought back" this embarrassment.
The GBI ONLY gets involved when invited by the sheriff, chief of police or local governing bodies.
Go th their website and check it out if you dont believe me. This is much ado about nothing.
Thank you Larry for showing the county what a huge financial impact the jail makes.
Thank you Larry for allowing all of the law enforcement agencies to work together, provide back up for each other, and as petty as this sounds, thank you for allowing the officers to eat lunch together when they have time.
Thank you Larry for saving a lot of tax payer dollars by providing a stable work environment and cutting back on the enormous turn over rate. Which in turn lowers training cost.
At least the deputies that are there now have experience and the citizens can become familiar with them. The revolving door has closed.
Regardless of the cause, this needs to be investigated. No one is above the law. It is absolutely disgusting to think someone that is suppose to up hold the law, may have done the opposite. I don't care about the political agenda. I'm sure that inmate doesnt care about that either.
I'm am glad this was not swept under the rug!
No matter what you try to do, unless you do it properly, your just wasting everyone's time.
thats because they are all related to waller!
But regardless, the GBI can not go out and make non drug related cases on their own without being first requested by a mayor, commissioner, police chief or Sheriff. Read up on the law sometime before assuming so much. This is not news at all, if you were already educated.
ALLEN WHITE FOR SHERIFF
WHAT ALL THE PAST SHERIFF'S AIN'T!
HONEST!!!!!
