Props to Sherriff Waller...we all knew he would do the right thing and shame on you Walter for saying he was not being compliant. You knew he had 3 days, and if you didn't you should have. The educated public knew. Get over yourself Scoop. You and your problem with Waller just look childish, and he always winds up looking like the better man. Shame on you.
Way to go Walter and Odom!! Nothing like using the intimidation of local media to get what you want. I'm requesting that the Sheriff's Office releases the name of the driver of the vehicle that crashed on Brent Rd. Hell, start requesting that Waller takes the time out to personally deliver paperwork to you on everything the department does
we never wrote he was non compliant. we wrote that he refused to release records that have been routinely released in the past.
our staff had a frank discussion today with larry and brad and i think we are all on the same page now. we plan to do everything within our power to cooperate with the sheriff's department but our first priority is to cover the news rapidly and accurately.
They have to punish the Herald Gazette for not taking up for Waller during the campaign. The Herald Gazette couldn't be bought like the other news source was so now they have to pay.
Good for you walter. I appreciate the way you stay non-biased. Most of us know who it is that like to trash you. They are just envious that you have a successful thriving business and that people actually respect you as a well-adjusted stable human being instead of a backstabbing gossip.
Maybe the Herald is used to getting all the information they want from the Buice administration and now that Waller is here, it just isn't sitting well. With so much information put in the paper and on the website, it's not a wonder that a change of venue will probably happen in these two recent murder cases. Wake up Walter. You taint the jury pool when you put sooo much information in the paper and on this website. There's a line and you cross it so many times, you really don't know what the rules are anymore. Pictures of dead Lamartians and wanting to know information that should only come out in court? What makes you so special anyway? Droplets of blood in the newspaper? How insensitive can you get and still be human? Even the worst of victims have family members who love them. What's wrong with you?
How do you know the other news source was bought? I think Buice had his picture in the paper an awful lot. Makes one wonder who was bought by whom.......
I really don't know why you put this particular article in the paper anyway unless you are trying to prejudice the public against Larry Waller. What other reason could there be. Your comment kinda sounds like you think you set Larry and Brad straight - which I seriously doubt.

Seriously? WTF? "Lamartians" are those extraterrestrials or perhaps residents of Lamar county? I don't know, but it could explain a lot...
and on a side note - no lines are EVER crossed by the Herald and their outstanding group - It's called "freedom of speech and of the press...the very freedom allowing you to post your response and express your opinion in this type of forum. Only matters of public record and statements directly from the source are reported in the paper - Records and info, I might add, that are released @ the hand of YOUR VERY OWN LARRY WALLER...
I totally agree,I'm sure that there will be a change of venue for this case.News is one thing but sensational journalism is just wrong and especially in the case of a possible capital murder case.In time all the evidence will be presented and justice will be done.WHY on earth would the DA or the sheriff's dept just hand everything over to these guy's as they have proven that they can't handle it with integrity.
I live here in Lamar County and have always appreciated the openess as well as will to print that Walter has with our newspaper. It looks to me like some people need to vent their personal differences elsewhere. The public has a right to know many things as well as use it to keep their families a little more safe. So please go finde somewhere else to vent your childish drama.
Thank you 'anonymous' for your well stated opinion. It has become obvious that with a forum like this there is absolutely no way to make the masses....well, not even happy....I would settle for satisfied. If they ask for more we give it. Then they complain we gave too much. But if we quit giving they say we are blind to what is going on and don't really represent the news in Lamar County. It is an interesting dilemma but one we are willing to tackle with honesty, integrity, and transparency.
I agree Andrew, and must say that was an educated response that you gave. I think that what bothers me the most is that people do not seem to realize or care that the people that they talk about on here have lives, families, and feelings. Regardless of whether the Sheriff is Buice or Waller that job is a job of public service. These men do/did that job for their county and its citizens. It sure isn't just for the paycheck. Many people would be suprised at how little the Sheriff makes for the amount of time that they work. But I digress....My point is Waller, Buice and everyone else that gets criticized/slandered on here has families, spouses, children, grandchildren, etc. and sometimes these comments hurt a lot of people in an unneccessary way. I at first thought a forum like this was going to be a great idea, and maybe it would be if people were mature enough, but right now it simply seems to be a tool for slander and hate--serving only to divide rather than unite, and hurt more than help. I was brought up by a Mama who said, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." , but it is obvious from these and many other posts that a lot of people weren't.
Nah, you jumped the gun and IMPLIED that Larry Waller was refusing to comply with the open records act, when what SHOULD have been stated is that the records had been requested and that Waller had until Thursday to comply. THAT would have been good and truthful journalism. But, instead you jumped at the chance to shed a dirty light on the Waller administration. Shame on you.
You got the records and you got them timely. So what's the beef?
You are absolutely right. I think in the very near future we are going to extend our registration policies for commenting. In other words you would have to enter a username (could be assumed or made up, of course) with a valid email address in order to sign in and comment.
Thank you for being patient and sticking with the Herald-Gazette.
I know this is a different case, but remarks made by the paper such as, "Use any influence you have" in making an example of certain criminals is not an opinion. It is a request and comes very close to tampering and tainting. This was printed in your paper and I think you totally overstepped the bounds of reporting news.
Well now that we have the open records , Lets see some of the Lamar County Industrial Development Authority Records . May see how some are working for you, or not.
Well I have read this entire thread and I say if you going to get your feelings hurt maybe you shouldn't read these kind of things. Opinions are just that, everybody has one and they all stink. It seems that some people here think like my latest girlfriend "If I want your opinion I'll give it to you!". Oh yes, she is no longer allowed in my house.
I will say this; Walter has the right to those records just as any other tax-paying Citizen does. It’s the law, and Waller is not above the law. Walter also has the right to print anything he darn well chooses. It’s the law, and if people don’t like it, they should go read the Pike County Times or another newspaper.
BUT Walter is very selective about the stories he runs, and he does refuse to run stories about government officials abusing Citizens rights (even when he has the records). I don’t know if this is because he feels that certain government officials have that right, or because he is biased, but it has happened.
Of course no lines are crossed, let’s just say that some things that should be in the open are simply “swept under a rug” and Walter just simply chooses to ignore it. But it’s his paper, and he has that right also. I just wish he wouldn’t do that.
...just sayin'
