Don’t sleep with babies: Three infants die in rollovers

In the weeks before Christmas, three Lamar County families lost their infants simply doing what many parents do – taking their baby into their bed for the night. All three of the children suffocated when a parent rolled over onto them while sleeping.

I have mixed emotions about this. I feel really sorry for the parents, and I also wonder what the hell are they thinking? In almost any other situation smothering an infant would be murder. This is one situation where only the people in bed know what really happened, but we all know it is stupid.

I think we also have to keep in mind how many babies die yearly from SIDS, and these deaths often occur in cribs, where babies are sleeping alone. I think it's a little short sighted to say no one should sleep with their infant child, though clearly if a parent is taking sedative medication, having consumed alcohol, or otherwise impaired should not be sleeping with an infant. Research has also shown benefits to co-sleeping (www.drsears.com), so it's not a black and white issue.

If we try hard enough, we can just hand over our babies to the "experts" to raise. There is something to be said for good nurturing parenting. Breastfed is bestfed and the most sweet moments with your baby is when you nurse them in bed with you. When my children were little my husband and I bought and read
THE FAMILY BED and thought it was great! There were times when we had four children in our bed and our children felt very secure and loved by all the nurturing they received in the night. Cribdeath happens, whether in bed with parents or in the hard cold crib!

I wonder if the Lamar County parents know that their primary and elementary school children will soon be riding the busses with middle school and high school students? Do the parents know just what kind of education these young kids get from the older ones? It seems that when finantial cuts need to be made, it is easiest to take funds from the bottom, and that is the transportation department. Do you realize that we don't even have a
transportation Ditector? We have, in this county, a high paid Dr. that sits in the transportation diredtors office and doesn't relay messages, talk of the radios or check and relay faxes. He has never driven a bus and doesn't have a CDL. We have ONE full time mecanic that does all he can to keep it all together and keep all happy but with so little help that it is falling under. The BUDGET can't support another full time mechanic, so we have a part-time one. We have a bus driver that halps with the phones and computer work. Also with scheduling,subs, and whatever else is needed. In other words, all he can with the time alloted him in order that he doesn't work TOO MUCH and cost the system TOO MUCH. When volunteers try to help, their hands get slapped. Do we really want to take this much from the department that works soo hard to transport your children safely and lovingly to their schools and back home again? I suggest this problem be checked into and corrected before it hits bottom. I think the safety of our children should come before money and I think that if you look at our beautiful new sports field and stadium, you might wonder which is the most important

How horrible for these mothers/fathers to lose their babies. I can only imagine what they're going through. I try to be a good mother but I'm guilty of sleeping with my three babies. They slept better with me and I was so sleep deprived I would do anything to help them sleep.

I agree with breast feeding totally, but there are beds that are made to slide beside the parents bed to make it easier for the mom to breast feed and put the baby off to the side where you will not roll on them. Some of these young mothers need to wake up and keep their pants on. I mean come on one of the mothers had 4 kids plus the one that died and she was in her very early twenties. It's time for these young mothers to take responsibility for their kids instead of making grandparents raise them.

I dont think that all three babies died by smothering. I think that information in the article needs to be corrected.

The information in the article came from the Lamar County Health Department and Department of Family and Children Services, which both provided information on the deaths and how to prevent them. No correction is necessary.

I am the grandmother of one of the infants that passed. I don't know where you got your information.Our grandson's death certificate is not even back yet. So who are you to write an article without all of the facts in. I was there, you were not. I have talked to the DFACS,and was told that we should ask you to recant what you printed.Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.

Melinda, I'm sorry for your loss.

However, DFACS and the Health Department gave me the information for this story. I can't recant, but I can print a rebuttal if you like. Printing your side of the story may have some privacy issues you and your grandson's parents may want to discuss first.

I am off work today and will be out of the office Thursday morning, but you can call me there Thursday afternoon to discuss it. 358-NEWS.

It's obvious, a littly skinny momma simply wouldn't squish and smother a baby like a fat one would, sorry if that hurts your feelings, but it's the truth.

Like I said your an idiot. One of these babies mothers is a family member and she isn't obese. Do you know how to read an article and get anything from it. Sounds like you have a body image problem. Besides the fact that I would rather be obese (which I am not) that a idiot who can't read. If you can't make a intelligent comment then don't comment on something you know nothing about.
