Due to multiple citizen complaints, Barnesville police chief Chuck Keadle has announced a 'zero tolerance' policy for those violating speed limits in the city.

So is the Barnesville police department going to violate state law governing how and when speed detection devices may and may not be employed? There are many tolerances built in.
Besides, "Zero tolerance" equates to "Zero common sense".
Here come the whiners....seems to me the police are damned if they do damned if they dont. Let me let you cry babies in on a big secret....dont speed and you wont get a ticket. I know its rocket science but maybe some of you can understand the concept.
Why dont yall complain to Kenny Roberts and the Chief of Police? The city needs to hire more officers. You know with only two officers working at night, there is only so much they can do. If they are on calls, which im sure they get a lot of, they dont have time to sit and watch for people speeding down Thomaston street.
I hope they post a car on Zebulon street. It's a 30mph zone with over a dozen kids living along the three blocks between the train tracks and the cemetary, but too many drivers use it as a drag strip. The same could be said of Elm Street.
What needs to be down is someone needs to stop the high school kids from speeding through the Town of Aldora. It's just crazy. There are many kids and elderly that live in that area. Someone is going to get seriously hurt. Last I checked the signs posted in that neighborhood says, "No through traffic"
Im glad some of you have a little knowlege about the 10mph cushion if you will. Some people are just ignorant to laws. I try to do research on things that I could be affected by such as slipping up and running a few mph over the speed limit. Some people would just pay the ticket and go on but some wont. If its a law then so be it. They should know they cant write a ticket for less that 10mph but im sure it will be done. Maybe Walter needs to start a topic on that. No speeder shall be issued a ticket for less than 10mph unless...........
This is informing the public so why cant it be done. The city and/or county WILL try to pull a fast one on the people.
Definition of Crackdown: An act or example of forceful regulation, repression, or restraint.
Yep, that sounds like the Barnesville PD. I think it's funny that the Barnesville PD wants to crack down on speeeding, when they should be cracking down on more important things than someone going 47 in a 45 zone.
They need to watch the road going down into the rec center on gordon rd.I have seen people going 50 or better going up and down that road. Also watch Bradley Cir.Its like a race track. they start at the end and see how fast they can go before its time to hit the brakes for the stop sign
I would like to see a crackdown on people driving around on golf carts with babies and children who are not restrained in car seats. This is ridiculously dangerous, especially considering how some of the golf carting fools drive their carts. If anyone hit one of those carts, infants and young children would likely be fatally injured.
Why do they have to "crack down" on something they should have been doing all the time? It is their job to enforce the law, are they admitting they have not been doing their job? Try to set a good example also BPD by obeying the law also. People lose a lot of respect when they see BPD officers speeding,,,
How about, police officers can't just use radar to issue tickets wherever they want to, each particular portion of road that the radar is used on must be certified by the state before a conviction may be had on it, and signs must be posted stating that-
Ijust want to know how two cops is suppose to catch speeder, answer911 calls, control the club and huddle house and walke around town making sure doors are locked and still patrol my neighbor and rec.
If they really wanted to be tough, they'd mosey on over to the dang Buggytown carwash and bust some drug dealers. They sit over there with their loud music, just smokin it up, right down the street from them. I know the cops/fire dept. can hear it; probably smell it too. Yet, nothing gets done.
You have 2 cops on duty at night that have to patroll the city of Barnesville. They have to go around and check the doors of all the businesses just to make sure the owner locked the doors..Of course if they get broken in to its the cops fault for not making sure the business owner lacked their own door....what a waste of time for the cops! If they are too stupid to lock their own doors the though, they deserve to be robbed. While doing this the 2 cops have to answer calls, which if anyone has a scanner they are well aware of how many calls are answered on a nightly basis. God forbid there be a dangerous call where the two officers are needed at the same place. If the people of Barnesville want better service from the city police dept. then everyone needs to quit bitching about what the cops dont do and demand that Chuck Keadle/Kenny Roberts hire more officers. This town has grown a lot over the last 10 years and the police force has stayed the same size. Throw the Gordon College population and the mix and this fine city is just waiting for disaster. People just remember that the cops can only do so much with limited resources. Everyday they put their lives on the line for you. Not for the pay. How about a thank you instead of all the negativity.
Do you think the police dont know what they can and cant do? I will leave it in their capable hands. Maybe they will catch you and you can spout off about what you think you know.
Like I said, in residential areas, historic areas, school zones, etc, the 10 mile over does not apply. Are you only worried about getting pulled over on 341?
40-14-8.
(a) No county, city, or campus officer shall be allowed to make a case based on the use of any speed detection device, unless the speed of the vehicle exceeds the posted speed limit by more than ten miles per hour and no conviction shall be had thereon unless such speed is more than ten miles per hour above the posted speed limit.
(b) The limitations contained in subsection (a) of this Code section shall not apply in properly marked school zones one hour before, during, and one hour after the normal hours of school operation, in properly marked historic districts, and in properly marked residential zones. For purposes of this chapter, thoroughfares with speed limits of 35 miles per hour or more shall not be considered residential districts. For purposes of this Code section, the term 'historic district' means a historic district as defined in paragraph (5) of Code Section 44-10-22 and which is listed on the Georgia Register of Historic Places or as defined by ordinance adopted pursuant to a local constitutional amendment.
I wish there was a law forbiding guys to walk around with their pants hanging down to thier knees. I wonder if they know how stupid they look, trying to walk and hold their pants up at the same time. Why would they think anyone wants to look at their drawers? What winners.
First of all, a majority of the speed limits are artificially low in many places (Like on 41 for example, 45? Come on) then they announce some "Zero tolerance" on speeding. Well, Georgia law does not allow "Zero tolerance" on speeding, read the laws someone posted above.
Anyway, no thanks here, if someone is flagrantly breaking the law, then ok, but to go out and hunt for people that exceed the posted limits? No support here. It sure is a bad feeling when your house is getting cleaned out by a burgular, while the locals are setting up on 41 awaiting someone exceeding the speed limit instead.
What about all the other "Citizen complaints"? Are they going to be addressed in this same manner?
How many properly marked residential area and historic areas are in Barnesville?
(Must be a "Residential area" sign posted with a speed limit sign, and must qualify and be certified by the state)
Everywhere else that they are allowed to use the devices on must be more than 10 over. The law is the law, officers can not change that, no need to go ask one.
It's not about money with the state patrol. The state does not keep the fine monies generated by GSP, it goes to the city or county the offense was committed in.
The cities and counties stating a "Crackdown" ort a "Zero tolerance" and so forth are amusing. Seems that if they consistiently do their job each day, and use common sense with their judgements with each case, then we wouldn't be seeing these ridiculous stories.
Send in the DI-rector of Public works..... He will create a pothole for dem to fall into ands it will makes him a hero.... Lawdy knows he needs to be seen as sumpin cuz he ain't squat in nuttin.
state patrol very seldom just sit and run radar. They work accident scenes and help with road block. They do try to get speeders sometime but not like the county and state do. State patrol can but rarely do write tickets unless you are going 13mph over. That goes on your "license" or MVR. They can write you a ticket for going 1mph over but its not worth their time. I know a guy that got stopped by GSP for doing 8mph over and he got a ticket. I guess its all in how they are feeling that day.
I live in historic downtown Barnesville. I have 2 young children that like to play outside but often we won't let them because of the speed demons that fly up and down our street including the law officers themselves. I will believe this one once I see justice being served on our street.

you always have at least a 5 mph cushion because of the difference in speedometer calibration. If you are issued a ticket for 1 mph over the speed limit it gets thrown out most of the time unless you have other charges with it. I know I got issued a ticket for 1 mph over in Milner many years ago and it was thrown out. Just ask law enforcement. They won't bother with a 1 mph over for a ticket. Its not worth the time and they don't get much money off of it.
I would love to know where some of you get your Ridiculous ideas.
If your children are playing in the front yard then they shouldn't be near the street. If they are then you are not doing your job as a parent. Quit whining about OH there are speeding cars on the road and watch your children. Go to the park, play in the back yard, do something but don't complain because you choose to play near the street.

It's all about the money!!!!!!
Budget shortfalls!!!!!
Remeber 45 on 41!! (45 mph on hwy 41)
Remember, must be more than 10 MPH over, radar operator must be seen 500 or more feet, must be in a properly marked unit, etc. etc.
The City of Barnesville needs to raise its revenues so they will be handing out more tickets.

Just do your job, and quit grandstanding.

Educate yourself, instead of stating "I don't think..." then being proven wrong.
Regardless, it doesn't get reported to the state to go on your license until you are 15 or more over anyway.

and enforce what is posted before the college
lets out for the summer. REMEMBER most of the
streets are 25 or 35. Most cars don't know
what that speed is.

Also, pedestrians only have right of way in a properly marked crosswalk.
