"I never thought that I was going to be caught up in this messed-up system."
So said Jessica Colotl quite candidly about being found out after living in this country illegally for 10 years and enjoying its benefits including enrollment in Kennesaw State University.

ILLEGAL:
1.) Unlawful; illegitimate; illicit; unlicensed.
2.) Illegal, unlawful, illegitimate, illicit, criminal can all describe actions not in accord with law.
3.) Illegal refers most specifically to violations of statutes.
4.) Prohibited by law
ALIEN:
1.) a person who is not a citizen of the country.
2.) in the United States any person born in another country to parents who are not American and who has not become a naturalized citizen. There are resident aliens officially permitted to live in the country and illegal aliens who have sneaked into the country or stayed beyond the time allowed on a visa.
We as a Democratic Republic for a long time govern by the rule of law. If we stick to it we may survive as a nation for a few more years.--Average life span of a Republic like we have . is about 200 yrs. According to history we are past due to be flushed down the tube. Our constitution and rule by law has kept us afloat. I see our present gov. officials not staying the coarse on our constitution and rule of law.
After all is said--welcome Jessica Colotl to the country, but do it by the rules. This would help stem the tide of illegals---MAY-BE.
We turn a blind eye to this,as usual. She is being allowed to finish her studies .Then what?? (Maybe in a year's time every one will forget.)
What is Mexico's method of dealing with illegals or for that matter any other country in the world ?
It is time for this country to take a stand!
Illegals get deported.Period.
Go to Mexico and fly their FLag upside down , as in Calif. and you will suffer for it.I could go on , but whats the point in this age of Political Correctness, and don't offend
What has happened to this country???
Sounds like we actually have a problem with our history.
There are many international students in this country. Ask them how they legally got in and their experience in our country how they strive to legal. Btter yet, get a copy of forms being filled out by intending vistors to this country. In there is a list of behaviours this country does not want of from its vistors.
Lastly, a primary requirement for legal immigrants is they be able to exhibit GOOD MORAL CHARCTER. Now don't blame the system if an illegal alien failed to demonstrate such requirement.
Be thankful the ICS even gave her the chance to finish her studies.
Take her seat on the bus, ride to the airport, and fly home.
Perhaps others need to do the same.
ANYONE who obstructs traffic or commit driving violations will be ticketed. ANYONE driving without a license will be arrested. ANYONE giving false information to authorities will be arrested. ANYONE committing perjury could be jailed and/or fined.
ANYONE in this country illegally will be subject to jail and deportation. THERE IS NO RACE ISSUE HERE. PERIOD. So I wonder too why the media and other people consider this as Racial Profiling. I think the people who are making this as an issue of racial profiling are the racist themselves. When things don't go in their favor, they scream racism. When they commit something wrong and get busted, they scream racism. Bfore 9/11, the issue of racial Profiling is seldomly raised. But since the arrest of people with various ethnic origins, everyone henceon has been crying of racial profiling if they get busted.
Jessica rightly blames the system because the system is to blame. Here in Atlanta we demonize the people who grow and harvest all the food we eat, who build all our homes, and pave all our roads. We have excellent, low-cost fresh food, inexpensive well-built homes and roads, and we have immigrant labor to thank for it, but we demonize them. We want to pretend like they're not even here, although 300,000 of them live and work in Georgia and all us citizens get full stomachs and sturdy houses and reliable roads while we force them to live in secret and in shame. This is the opposite of justice, and it is the system we enforce upon them.
In this country in the past we had democratically enacted Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation of citizens and kept a certain segment of society shut out from basic human rights. The civil rights movement in the 50s and 60s got us to see that these laws were unjust and we revoked them. Now the way our democratic society treats immigrants, not fellow citizens, may be our next civil rights battle. Maybe Jessica Colotl is our next Rosa Parks.
There is no way for us to go door-to-door throughout America and arrest and jail 12 million fathers, mothers, children, and grandparents and deport them. That would create more refugees than the Palestinians forced from Israel, the Iraqis who fled Iraq, and the Cambodians and Laotians forced from their countries by all those wars, combined.
A more realistic approach would be to grant legal status to the 12 million among us, register them, give them papers, and tax them thoroughly and fairly for all the labor they provide us so that they can pay their own way for any services they receive like K-12 public education or visits to the emergency room at the hospital. Let them come out of the shadows, participate openly in our society, pay their own way, and get drivers' licenses. Give them a realistic and practical path to become American citizens, which is what they want and deserve for all the hard work they've contributed to our economy.
Her parents chose to bring her here, and this has been her home for half of her young life. I think it's silly to say that she should have just immediately deported herself upon realizing she was undocumented. Her parents are here, her life is here, what was she supposed to do? If I were in her shoes, I'm sure I would have stayed.
Where I see that the system is broken is that 'the system' doesn't allow a clear path to legalization for bright young people like her. She is clearly smart, and would be an asset to this country if she were able to gain legal status and contribute to our society. We need people with her intelligence here, and we need a way to legalize people who have something to offer the country. It's a win-win to be able to do that, and we do have a broken system in that aspect. Our current system separates families and makes it next to impossible to come legally.
"A more realistic approach would be to grant legal status to the 12 million among us, register them, give them papers, and tax them thoroughly and fairly for all the labor..." Do you hear yourself? What makes you so sure that they WANT to be taxed? If I were illegal I sure wouldn't! That'd be cutting their own pocketbook. I have a South African friend who is attending UGA. He does not receive any financial aid for this. He spends a lot of his income on an immigration attorney, applying for the visas and such necessary for him to stay here. Do you really think that the illegals want to do this too? I doubt it.
12 million illegals could be deported, but of course it will not happen overnight (read how Malaysia is doing it in Borneo and Sabah. The only request of the governments of the offending illegals is to deport them with respect and dignity).
THIS IS THE SCENARIO if we try to legalize 12 M illegals. I am 100% sure not all of them will qualify, lucky if 75 % will. You know why? Here are some current requirements to be an immigrant:
1) Do medical and Physical exam. OK thats easy. But there are certain diseases that will exclude some
2) Proof of payment of taxes ..hmmm.. do you want to waive that?
3) Finger printing, background and criminal check. NOW, this is the tricky part because it will bring out the alien's demonstration of GOOD MORAL CHARACTER. Many applicants have been denied of this. How do you define that character-- they say something about "moral torpitude". My understanding is if you commit murder, drug offenses (this can be revealed in the medical exam), DUI, all felony crimes actually.. even petty theft, domestic violence, driving w/o license (depends how good your lawyer is), etc. Those are SOME grounds for an inadmissible alien. DO YOU WANT TO WAIVE these requirements? (or do do you want to cherry pick the violations..)
4) Proof that they are not a public burden. That means no welfare, will not depend on the government, no freebees from tax payers. If they cannot show a proof, they need to have a sponsor to sign the Affidavit of Support contract and its legally binding (You might want to sponsor one).
(There are other requirements once they get their greencards, like change of address everytime they move, ALWAYS carry their document with them- hello Arizona!)
Given those requirements, a LOT may not qualify. Do you think this unqualified will come out? NOPE..Will they self-deport? NOPE. They will still be illegals and 10 years from now, they will be clamoring for a new amnesty again..
Finally, compute how much drain 12 M will bring to our already depleted social security/Med. fund. How do you fund the SSI of these people a few years from now?
Now if we stop the free handouts theses lazy folks are going to get hungry and then want to earn their way instead of waiting for the government to give it to them.
Boot the illegal aliens out of the country. They are criminals; started out that way by entering the country illegally. Stop the free handouts and force the lazy to earn their keep.
Now I'm sure you are wearing that moronic liberal patch. So this don't mean cut the food off from those truly needing it. Just the 98% that don't and are just to sorry to take responsibility. And if they think those jobs are under them, then while they are working those jobs, they can better educate themselves so they can get better.
While we are booting out the illegal aliens, let’s boot out a sorry ass liberal with each and every one so we won’t have a future problem of history repeating itself.
…………. Same to you!
Realistic??? Are you kidding OR are you Nuts???
Giving them Amnesty would be an open invitation for 12 million more to come on over - It your Turn!
What is your opinion on guarding the border?
Do you believe we need a border?
The "Right" answer might be as simple as making it a FELONY for hiring illegals.
With stiff fines and shutting down businesses for habitual violators.
I would vote for someone who favors this...
HEY WASHINGTON,
PROTECT OUR FREAKIN BORDERS!!!
He got several standing O's from the leftest
in congress.
Make sure y'all make a note of all those standing in agreement to a president who was criticizing our country's immigration laws,
while Mexico's laws are much more harsh.
Let the main-stream-media talk about those laws for a change.
Hey Obama, what's next?
Kim Jong Ill coming over to give us a lecture on human rights.
I am sure with the nutjobs we have in congress, he would get a few standing O's as well!
WE MUST STAND UP WITH ARIZONA , ARM-IN-ARMS AND FIGHT FOR OUR FUTURE SURVIVAL!
Also, your statement "Most that make here are down right good people and that they possess the desire for a better way of life is admirable" is a non-issue. There is a difference between "morally good people" and "legally good people." Illegal immigration is a LEGAL issue. Even the Pope needs a visa to enter the USA.
Her parents are criminals and she was raised in a criminal culture. We don't need people like her who abuse the system and believe there is no law that need to follow. Her supporters are all insane.
We here are not in atlanta. We do not share the same opinions that the vast majority of you atlantians do. And lastly, atlanta does not truthfully represent the rest (majority) of Georgia.
Regardless, "Love it or leave it"
The "system" is messed up. The root of the problem is that immigration law is not enforced umiformly; some are able to skirt the law while others are subject to its penalities. Why shouldn't Jessica be an exception? She can point to many others who have also been given "exception" status.
In addition, employers want to hire illegals, especially in the building trades. If no one wanted to hire illegals, then none would come here. The fact of the matter is that when employers hire undocumented workers off the books, they skirt their tax liability. The dirty secret is that some businesses want to hire undocumented workers so that they can save expenses.
Mexico is a poor country, moreover, and if remitttances from undocumented workers here stopped flowing to families there, it would create social unrest and further destabilize the country. The fact of the matter is that it is better to have a more stable Mexico on our border, and fostering that should be the focus of our immigration policy.
This issue is not one of "us" versus "them." It's a question of regional political stability mired made more complex by immigration laws that are not uniformly enforced. The best solution in the long term is to foster stability and prosperity for all of us. Mexico and the United States are econmically entwined, and simple-minded solutions will likely backfire.
Now, to Jessica. She sounds Americanized already to me as she has a lawyer on her side and nothing is her fault. I'll give her this much- she is getting her education and I'm pretty sure she will do something positive with it. Perhaps she is the type of immigrant we should welcome here, no matter the circumstance that brought her. What's left for her now is to stop the whining and spend that time working toward getting her citizenship.
As for the illegal immigrant issue, this is so complex, because people's lives are involved. It seems all we can do is follow the letter of the law and enforce it. No one is going to like it and no one is going to agree with every portion of it.
As for 'Mexico is a poor country';it is the sixth-largest producer of petroleum in the world-where is that money going? Mexico uses the U.S. as a 'safety valve';encourage the uneducated socio-economic underclass to migrate to America to reduce the likelihood they'll revolt.Calderone prattling on about immigration rights while standing on American soil was disgusting-why doesn't he clean up his own yard before criticizing ours?
It is exactly people like you that are miring down the issue. Trying to make it clear as Mud. Way too busy explaining why the Simple IDEAS won't work and explaining how "Complicated" the issues is. Name calling included.
Meanwhile, back at the Arizona ranch,
The river of illegals continue to flow, flow, flow.
I say let's try some of those simple ideas and give them a test.
What's wrong Mr. Snarky???
Scared they may actually WORK and you "intellectuals" may have to eat some crow.
It is altogether political, NOT altogether complicated.
When will the "more stable" Mexico be here?
Now let me get this straight.
This young lady was driving without a license which also means no insurance have no idea how she got registration.
How was she able to enter High School,College without these documents? It would appear to me we are looking at many years of deception to arrive where she is at today.
If they let her slide on this would I suppose my wife can ask immigration for a refund on all the fees she had to pay to make sure she could stay here legaly.
She and her family had 10 years to do the right thing like lets say consult an immigration attorney."Duh". Doesnt it seem ironic that she was going to school to become an attorney?
I certainly hope there is a full investgation on this matter concerning how she was able to go to High School,College own a car without all the documents the rest of US citizens have to possess.
Sounds like we actually have a problem with our history..
Different countries are treated differently under immigration law. Canadians and Mexicans are not equal, according to law. Did your Canadian wife do it the right way because she was married to you, a US citizen? Jessica Colotl or her parents didn't have this option, and barring something like marriage to a citizen, obtaining status is not as simple as filling out paperwork and sending it in.
Illegal is illegal is illegal. She is a lowlife moocher.
You said "Jessica Colotl or her parents didn't have this option, and barring something like ..."
THEY DID HAVE OPTIONS.
1) When they "realized" they are illegals, the options were either a.-they contacted an attorney and explore ways to be legal, or b.- they could have gone home and not violate laws. These are the two options almost all immigrants had. They exahausted all means to achieve (a) but when its not feasible, they opted for (b).
2)People said that she had no option but to drive w/o a license since she cannot get one. There are again two options: a.- Drive and take the risk or b.- Don't drive at all and not violate any laws. When I was a new arrival in the U.S. (legal, mind you), I didn't drive for many months altho I know how to drive and have a foreign license. But I did not still take the road until I got my U.S. drivers license as I don't want to violate the law.
They have options but they simply ignored all other alternatives except to ignore the law and hide until they got busted.
I am just wondering, her parent's dream and her dream accordingly is for her to get a good education. Now that the dream is about to be realized courtesy of the one year grace period of the ICE, then can they say Thank You America and go back home now?
What gets me is, you liberals defend people that wouldn't lift a finger to assist you if you needed it. Ridiculous.
Guess it was better to break the law instead of consulting with an immigration attorney to explore her options.
We are going quickly down a slippery slope- we are in great financial debt, we are spiritually disconnected, we are torn between ideals, we are intentionally misinformed by the information broadcasters, we are led by the headless with selfish personal agendas, and we afraid to offend any other country by disagreeing with their policy.
But we must first place our principles before our personalities. Only then can we truly identify the problems and agree on common practical solutions. As our Pledge states, "united we stand, divided we fall."
Today, we are still a strong sovereign nation. Today, we are still the United States of America.
Ummm...what pledge are you referring to?
I understand your confusion to the OP's misstatement, but I think you understand the idea conveyed... heh?
