Nearly 20 years ago, Georgia’s deputy transportation commissioner held a news conference on the grounds of the Barnesville Depot to announce local citizens would be able to ride commuter trains to Atlanta to attend the 1996 Olympic Games.
She, of course, lied to us all.

"With all due respect to our friends in Griffin and Forsyth, downtown Barnesville is more vibrant than either and has much more going for it."
I will be happy to acknowledge the sub-par quality of Forsyth but I have to firmly disagree with the assessment of Griffin. Having just hosted a Beer Festival, boasting the only regional Macintosh computer store, providing food from multiple restaurants (which serve more than fried food and include their own Slice Pizza), providing great, locally roasted coffee at Safehouse, etc., I would hardly say our ghost town here in Barnesville is more vibrant. Now I like a fatty, Friday night prime rib dinner just as much as the next person, but I would hardly claim downtown Barnesville is vibrant.
I fail to get excited about this, the history of other commutor rail, is that everyone has to pay, and no one gets alot.
Red Flag #2: "you could be asked to pay for the construction of a commuter rail line that will amount to nothing more to a high-speed safety hazard locally."
Sounds a bit of arrogance is being passed our way. To you #1 Anonymous on 06/08/10 at 09:21 AM; why would I want to pay for something for investors to capitalize on while they turn their nose up at us? Sounds like you might be doing a little bit of fishing to me and using a hidden agenda for bait.
Time for negotiations is now and every effort to block passage through the county should take place unless this investment pays dividends to the citizens who live in our county. It might be considered as playing hardball but if that what it takes: Then let’s play ball. We pay our local taxes for benefits to our citizens who live in Lamar County; not those living in Monroe or Spalding counties. They have their own tax payer base in which to reap rewards from. We are taxed enough already!
Next, after Barnesville stops are scheduled, the rail service will link our community with a major city. With that is sure to add to an already increasing crime rate. The time is now to demonstrate to would be criminals that Lamar County is not the place to commit any kind of crime. Our justice system should push for swift convictions to criminals with the harshest of penalties and prison time, especially those that are for the distribution of drugs.
The rail service could be good or could be bad. It will depend upon what we make of it and how we deal with it as a community. It could also be what many have come to expect. We pay for something to get nothing! I for one am tired of that scenario. If we get nothing, they can expect nothing. If it’s forced down our throats, perhaps our leadership could adopt a local policy now to institute a first ever railway toll service to pay for use through the county to increase safety awareness for the increased hazard.

"If there were any money to be made on passenger rail, commuter or otherwise, Norfolk Southern would be doing it"
That video is a prime example of baboons....and I'm not calling the officers the baboons. Is Shawty still crying about his poor eyes...oh boo hoo.
Basically, if we have to pay some of the cost, we are going to reap some of the benefits. And if would-be criminals see this as a transportation advantage to add to a crime rate, we should see to it that we put them away for a long time while demonstrating to others that crime will be dealt with harshly in Lamar County.
If my opinion interferes with your agenda on the subject, well, like I said, you are entitled to your opinion. I believe that almost all in the county are tired of paying out and getting nothing. I’m confident that most all in the county would agree that if criminals want to do a crime to be prepared to do lots of time and have the money to pay the taxpayers back for the trouble.
