People ask, "What's your description of a good newspaper?" I believe a good newspaper is a smorgasbord of information - something for everyone. A good newspaper also is a community talking to itself.

freedom of speech doesnt exsist with this paper.you consistently refuse to post negative comments when it is obviously due and only respect freedom of speech if the comment is positive....
Check out the "Ryan Christopher" article... comments to that story have been completely blocked.... I've never seen that before- it is interesting. Also, this is an ironic title heading to be placed under that??? By the way, where is your story on Tammy Jacobs's passing? She contributed quite a bit to this community in the public defender's office and in private practice. Just wondering
How Ironic!! It’s very Ironic for you to have this article on your website. First of all you monitor all comments so if YOU (Walter) don’t like it gets immediately axed. You only want positive comments on certain articles and you also publish nonsense like the Ryan Christopher article. How is that relative to what’s going on in Barnesville? How many other Lamar county residents are reported on when they are in an accident outside of town? Not that many!!
“I evaluate a newspaper's strength by its willingness to take stands on important matters and stimulate discussion.”
How can a discussion be stimulated when you remove posts and disallow negative posts or things that you just don’t like in General?
“What makes the First Amendment so precious is that it allows us to be as outlandish as we choose. It covers both ends of the extremes and everything in the middle. For it to work, it must. That means most of us, the moderates in the middle, are safely covered as the ultra-left and ultra-right-wingers duke it out.”
I guess that the First Amendment is so precious to you Walter but not to the people reading your paper with opinions? Don’t we qualify for the same rights?
“What startles me is that so many people believe the First Amendment applies only to them. As long as I agree with them, I'm a good guy and they chant, "Tell it like it is, brother!" But if I write something they don't like, I'm a no-good, egg-sucking scalawag. Immediately, you're pigeonholed as a Democrat, Republican or just plain idiot.”
Aren’t you doing the same thing with the blocking of comments? As long as we the readers agree with you and everyone else it’s all fine and dandy but be negative and POOF there goes our comment and opinion.
“I want on my tombstone: "Lord, he was different, but at least the old fool was fair."”
Really now you’re fair to everyone? If that is the case then why are so many comments blocked and/or removed? How about reporting systems like many other newspapers have? If someone has issues with a comment they report it and its inspected at that time. I know the Savannah Morning News does that.
“Actually, I think the Internet has helped to bring out the worst in personalities. Anonymous commentary enables people to climb into sniper stands and shoot bullets they'd never fire face-to-face. You see this every week in Athens. Online commentary quickly turns into a contest to see who can be the most cynical and/or the snottiest. That's why I ignore those kinds of remarks.”
But you also ignore comments that are against the mainstream way of thinking too.
“Instead, I try hard to be open-minded. After all, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinions.”
If that is the case then why do you block and refuse so many comments?
“Opinion is, in my opinion, there for you to take it or leave it. You can agree or disagree. You can crank out your own comment. You can even curse and flail your arms.”
Yes that may be the case but if we do no one will know about it because you of course will hide it.
“Your right of expression stops within a quarter-inch of my nose.”
That is a very true statement! However, many of us are not allowed our right of expression because as I have stated before it will just be blocked because you didn’t like it.
Im sure they were blocked because some people, in very poor taste, were making terrible accuasations when this man could have been seriously injured. I dont know who Tammy Jacobs is either, but Im sure her family would not want her bashed on here when she obviously cant defend herself.
Leave the race comments,if you like to throw racial slurs, to the appropriate blog.
the point is "free speech". The Sheriff is constantly bashed and his article comments are never blocked, along with criminals and public figures- that is my point. I don't know who this man is, but he must have some great power with the newspaper to stop all commets instead of just having them moderated. Mr. Geiger, can you please answer? I am sure there is a logical explanation.
Mrs. Jacobs was a Barnesville attorney that served in the public defender's office. She took on some of the toughest cases in the circuit in the name of fair legal defense. She was a darn good lawyer.
I've never seen a whole comment section blocked before. It makes me curious about who that person is and what kind of influence he must have. I don't know him (and sorry he was in the accident) and probably wouldn't have thought twice about the article until I saw it was blocked. It makes me wonder, who gets this kind of treatment? I have seen the most slanderous, cruel, and hateul comments in here on so many people...
Can the paper tell me how this is done in case my name ever gets in here one day and I want it blocked?? This is a serious question for the editor, please answer.
We know that #6, but the problem is it is allowed for everyone else on here. What makes this person different? Where did "free speech" go? where is the oxygen ?
who said anything about race? why is it anymore ok to constantly bash Waller, Buice and Roberts on here but a few negative comments on a comissioner get the WHOLE comment section blocked?
Is he related to Walter? married to his sister?? really I would like to know
oops, he is a school board member, my error. As I said, don't know him but am very curious as to his power to influence the paper like no one else ever has
"The author does not allow comments to this entry"
I fail to see how any one who lacks the testosterone to attach their name to a post, should be concerned with censorship. That's weird to me. You hide but want to say whatever you want.
But yes, Walter does censor. He has done so with what I sent him for years. You have to understand, he has ghost just like everybody else. I'm sure he doesn't care to ruffle certain feathers. He's refused to print letters I've sent because I name names and he doesn't like that. I should be the one to answer for that, and not to him.
So the bottme line, don't send the paper anything you think will be printed in it's entirety. Walter is the Czar, it's his paper and he's the in house censorer.
Oh, and by the way, racial makeup is part of the world. If you can't handle that, get off and find another planet.

I think it is time to put the blog to rest. If anyone has an issue with a local public figure then they need to speak to them face to face. We the people put them into office so we should be able to tell them personally how we feel about certain issues. There are over 17000 people in this county and it seems the same 3 percent get on here to just stir things up and try to cause a lot of havoc. They have even attacked family members who have nothing to do with certain issues. I for one believe in freedom of speech but if you have questions or comments on certain issues then approach them head on. Drive by shootings do not prove man hood nor does rapid name calling by "anonymous".
Congratulations: A name like Watching as America Spins out of Control is not much different than anonymous. The author is still hidden in a veil of secrecy. That's just an opinion that I didn't think of until read your post. I made an observation.
P.S. I don’t mean anything derogatory by my comment.
still trying to figure out where race came into the discussion.... but your reply does not explain what caused the abrupt closing of the comments. It is highly unusual and does not look like the Editor will answer.
Also, being anonymous may be an issue if I was making accusations or slandering someone, since I would not do that to anyone, then it should not matter in my opinion

You are right Gary but I do not get on here bashing people and calling them names. I think you missed my point but that is fine. I have always enjoyed reading your posts and most of the time I try not to comment. You being an individual who was once in the military knows that sometimes you have to remain anonymous. This will be my last post and one day, I too will be able to post without the veil of secrecy!
I hope you will continue to post even under you alias. You material is worth the read. I too am not identified completely by posting under just initials. Your chosen name may be an alias but it sure fits the way things are today. America is spinning out of control.
Free speech means everyone has a right to day what they want.
Free press means anyone who wants to, can publish what they want, but does not mean that they have to print everyone's opinion.
If you don't want your opinions blocked, start your own paper or blog.
Freedom of speech and anonymous slander are two entirely different things. May you and your family never be stalked by an obsessed, meth-addicted coward who uses this blog as a tool.
What I find to be seldom found in a newspaper is a commitment to a higher truth other than the bottom line of a spreadsheet. What is rarely seen in this business is a level of unshakeable faith in humanity that “it will” find its way forward without the need of media slant. Editorials are great, but before hand, the voices of both sides must be brought forward, expressed and only then can the injection of an editorial. The influence of the editor is tremendous and should always start out by saying “This is what I think and then why” and “the why” is all that need be expressed. A newspaper is much more than just a business and should be deemed as a noble and sacred responsibility to all the community. The position of an editor has a duty to humanity that I believe is much greater than that of a man of the cloth. I believe this because the editor is of only a few positions that can easily address all sides of the issue. In today’s media the contributors believe it’s a game of zero sum, but in reality it’s one where we all lose. The game could just as easily be one, that at the end of the day, win-win for all.
