Wow how times change! In 2000 the Lamar County athletic association was told that “it was against Georgia law for the school board to pay for upgrades of athletic facilities and only the proceeds from the gate could pay for such things" I hate to see how much it will cost at the gate to get into the new stadium for a home game!
Actually, the school colors are blue, white, and red. The current trend of the school is to put more emphasis on the blue and white. I think that most of the school's teams have blue and white uniforms with a small amount of red trim. I think the football team wore red helmets during the 80's, but I may be wrong on that one.
I think that it's safe to say that Lamar Co. now has the nicest football and baseball facilities in Region 5-AA. Now, they have to start working on making the feeder programs better.
Bigger, stronger, faster... Will the players ever buy into that concept? Facilities don't win championships. Players and coaches do... Great facilities help attract players, or at least they should... But, the training regimen has to structured, so as to produce the bigger, stronger, & faster athletes. Winning championships is about developing mentally and physically tough players. Coaches coach, and players play... So, what's missing in this equation?
That is still true. Local property taxes collected can not be used for athletics. The facilities that are under construction will be paid for from splost. I'm glad to see the great progress we are making. It's going to be great to have a fine arts center.
There has been some idle chatter about upgrading the rec programs. In a lot of instances, you will find that counties with strong rec programs -- providing a higher level of competition -- and, with strong middle school feeder programs, have strong high school programs. The dots just have to be connected at some point. A weak link in the chain could stymie the progress of the opportunity to be successful at the top of the pyramid. Or, so it would seem...
Yes the field is looking good. Also our colors are red, white, and blue. The last couple of years, they just chose to do blue and white. Now that we have a new field, it is time for our team to improve. Monitoring the team's results for the past few years, I used to wonder why were we getting a new field. But I am a strong believer in change, through teamwork, Barnesville can go all the way.
Congratulations to Dr. Truby and the board for providing such a wonderful facility for our schools and community. From top to bottom, Lamar Countians should be very proud of the investments made here in the last few years. The progress that we've made with our upgrades will excite our whole system...athletically and academically.
I can't believe we're getting a new Football stadium. I, as a Lamar county student, will doing anythinyg in my power to put Lamar County back on top. We as a team are going all the way this coming up football season.
Yes, these facility upgrades should energize the community, the coaches and players, and just about anybody that cares about seeing progress being made... But please, just don't stop with upgrading the facilities. That's just a mere' beginning of the real challenge... Work-on expanding the rec program -- make it more competitive, so that kids will learn at an early age on how to compete for a championship. Take a long-hard look at the middle school feeder programs to see if they are structured, so as, to provide the high school programs with players that 'have been there, and done that', so-to-speak... The bar has to be set high... Settling for mediocrity at the lower levels will result in mediocrity at the higher levels. There has to be a plan... Wishin'-&-hopin' won't get it done...
This is the kind of field that 5A teams play in. Being that the property was stolen to build it, do you think the school could rob the public some more and develop a winning team capable of competing for championships?
No wonder our country is in the condition it is in. We are all n------ rich. Something flashy like a sports jacket or spinning wheels makes us feel like we are special but really we are still the same people. A million dollars down the drain for show.
It's called PRIDE. A notion that is seeing a big decline as time passes in this country. It is also a means to bring a community together - yet another notion in decline.
Since it is being paid for with tax payer money, I guess it belongs to the citizens of the county. Then there should't be any cost involved to see a game because we have already paid and will continue to pay. What about us citizens using it for something other than games. Just exactly what are we getting for our tax money?
new field look great but we need a coach who can play, teach and lead our team to a region championship. a lots of great talent is in our
school system but not getting the chance to play in their strong spot or postion. please have a coach who have more than 15 plays in the play book
Your observation is way off base... The foundation is being laid now for the future success in athletic competition for the Lamar Co. School System's Athletic Teams. Certainly, the past achievements, or lack thereof, leave a lot to be desired...
By upgrading the facilities, the administration is attempting to bring pride to the community. They're making a statement that winning and successful programs are important -- and, not just afterthoughts. Apathy is a program killer, and apparently there is plenty of it to go around -- apathy, i.e.
But, that's o.k., if you are an underachiever, and are satisfied with the status-quo... Expect little in return, and most likely, you will get little in return. One old wise man once said... "That's a self-fulfilling prophecy." If you expect to lose, then you will... Be satisfied to be a sleepy little town that hardly anybody outside of Lamar Co. knows about... That's your choice... Others want to grow and prosper, and there's certainly something good to be said for that mantra, as well... Off the soapbox, now, lol.

I hear Michael Vick will soon be looking for a new job.
When they see progress being made, then maybe they will want to get up off of their butts and get involved, instead of complaining and looking for reasons to fail.
Are You Kidding? Lamar Co. High School, until recently, has never had a field that they could call their own for football and baseball. Summer's Field was a carryover from the old Gordon Military Prep School, and obviously is not located on school property. The high school baseball games were being played at the rec. department, and were played one year on the Gordon College Field. Now people are griping when the school actually has a 'true' home field advantage. Give me a freaking break!!! Unbelievable...
