On some items, if i support the local merchants, I fail because i cant buy the same amount of things for the same amount of money if I were to go to somewhere like walmart, stein mart, ross or somewhere like that. Anyone that would pay 16.99 for a toaster from a local merchant when you can pay 9.99 from a big chain, is an idiot. Do that 10 times and you have blown 70 bucks. Its all about competative market. I cant help that the mom and pop places cant compete with the chain stores. I work hard for my money and I have to get the most out of every dollar I spend.
Barnesville and Lamar County need to think about the big picture. They need to adopt policies that favor local merchants, and encourage local businesses.
My small local business brought 200-300K dollars a year into this area from out of state, and the local government virtually ran me off to another county because of errors they made that they expected me to pay for.
Thousand of dollars that formerly went to local businesses now are going to another county.
They add SPLOST sales taxes thinking it is harmless, but every smart shopper buying anything major looks at this and considers purchasing where taxes are lower.
Not looking at the big long term picture is killing us.
The Country Kitchen has been around since before I was born...can't believe that they have now gone out of business too...but then again , I ask myself- when was the last time I ate there? I guess I am to blame as much as anyone. If we don't support it, it won't make it....
I was taxed twice on the same property when I had a home business here. Both bills described the same piece of property. Any profit made was give right back to the county in b*llsh*t fees. Even the trash pickup was doubled. No increase in trash, just greed of the providers.
I spend my earnings elsewhere and out of state preferably to avoid any tax! F lamar county! Youve done it to yourselves!
If/when this economy and specifically the housing market picks back up, Lamar county will have a rude awakening coming to it. I would be willing to bet that there are ATLEAST 125 houses forsale around here. This number will probably double when it picks back up.
The things that I need to buy are not in this county!!!! I always have to go out of town to shop!!!! A decent selection of clothing, electronics, jewelry, home furnishings, bath and body, mens and womens fragrances,etc... are not around here. Sorry, but if I need a decent pair of jeans or shoes, Im not goin to the Dollar Generel, Roses or Freds people!!! I drive to Macon or Griffin. Thats were all the decent places to eat out are at too!! We want more than chicken, hamburgers and freakin pizza!! Thats why there are so many dang houses for sale here!!! There is nothing here! Everybody is moving. Everybody who is somebody in this one horse town dont even send their kids to school here. They all go to schools out of town and private schools. Wake up Barnesville!! We are well on the way back to nothing but horse and buggies here. You actually need a horse and buggy to travel on all the streets here because your cars are staying out of line due to all the freakin pot holes on our streets!

An inspiring reminder of the reason for the season.

As much as I want my local businesses to succeed, I have to shop where I can get what I need at the best price possible
