What a joke. Lamar better realize though that since Jay couldn't get his money this way, that means the millage will go up. Either way Lamar get ready to bend over and take it.
I would like to encourage everyone to take a moment to pray for our leaders ! Ask God to change them and bless them to make decisions that will glorify Him ( God ) and bless his people ( citizens ) . If you haven't accepted Christ into your heart you may not understand . Thats ok , its not to late to call on the name of the Lord to be saved ! Remember to pray , vote , and ask the Lord to handle the politics ! I'll pray and ask a blessing on all of you as well .
I can not understand why EVERYONE in Lamar county does not have to pay this fee. Just because I own my home and pay taxes, I should NOT get penalized with another bill! Even those who rent their residence use the fire and ambulance at some point I'm sure. Owning your own home is a dream for Americans, but that is just one way for Lamar county to get more money. Absolutely Ridiculous!!!
Well Barnesville looks like we got took again!
I guess all the money they took in got them back in the green!!!!
I'm retired and just have S.S. and believe me it isn't much and could not afford this crap but I paid mine, are we gonna get it back or was that just a trick to help our town Gov. save their own ass' !!!!!

i would like to get my 80 bucks back with INTEREST!!!!!!!!!! Jay and his Mafia are such a JOKE!!!!!!!!
How abou this? You get a committee together of about 1000 people from all around the community and pray 24 hr 7 days a week for the next year that our taxes don't go up and lets see what happens. If pray is the answer to all things then I'm sure he can get us out of paying taxes.
Walter,
Would you please investigate and report what is being done to those who did not pay the fee. There is so much speculation about that, and it should be reported so those who did pay will know. Also, there was an additional fee for ambulance service. Is there discussion of eliminating that also, or just the fire fee?
May understanding was that the fee just paid was for 2010, so if eliminated for 2011 no refunds would be given.
Can you please find out for us?
I'm sorry but it doesn't take an Einstein to run things. Learn the simple math of balancing a check-book. Going to a meeting and voting on a project before knowing where the funds will come from to pay for it is ludicrous. If the leadership doesn’t plan to operate within a budget then why go to all the effort to have one. The BOE may consume the majority of the budget however; there is nothing wrong with trying to establish a little communication with them when developing the budget.
Here is a hint for them. Operate with the funds they have allocated for the year. Don’t borrow money that the loan interest will subtract from next years funds. If extra money is needed for a project then let them get off their obvious high horse and take the need to the people. Let the people know in advance what the idea will do to next year’s budget and how it will affect the taxes. Keep the people in the loop. If the leadership screws up then slash their funds and pay; to zero if necessary. There should be consequences for inept leadership. Expect returns from the IDA to produce. Why dish out money to a nonproductive authority. Let the elected leadership represent the people rather than their own interest. Tell them to use some common sense and learn to get out and talk with all the people they suppose to represent and not just their friends and associates. In short, be a leader instead of a self appointed elitist. Develop a little vision and make an effort to plan for the future rather than assuming everything will stay the same.
My last 2 cents is to give everyone connected with justice the boot that thinks justice is a joke. One of our biggest problems with crime around here is that criminals are learning there is no punishment for crime in Lamar County.
Very well said GM. I think your idea of a pay reduction for poor leadership is a grand idea. I do believe that would clear up all debt in Lamar. We would be a county run by a large group of people 'donating' their time. The leadership and elected officials of this county is a joke and a complete embarrassment. Maybe we should go to a system where every elected official has to swear under oath everyday when they arrive at their jobs, then threatened with arrest and imprisonment when they breach that oath. They definitely need a reminder of what their job descriptions are. I am ready to see the citizens get what they are voting for. I'm ready to vote for the 'truth' and not a 'lie'. You were on point with your comment about one of our biggest problems with crime being that the criminals are learning there is no punishment for crime in Lamar County. I don't think there has ever been a more truthful statement.
State and federal budget cuts pass US House and Senate. Teacher cuts, 4H cuts, Education cuts and County cuts.
Don't cut Law enforcement and firefighters. This letter is to all town, city and state managers, governors, and lawmakers in our United States of America. Never cut law enforcement and firefighters census positions from your budgets. In the USA a national law should be passed by our Congress to make budget census for all police and fire department officers a priority, never to be adjusted downward. Where would the monies come from to support this national law? A special payroll tax titled “Public Safety Support.” Some would say “not another tax.” A current unnecessary tax could be found and eliminated. We as citizens of the USA must speak up to support our law enforcement and firemen, as our public safety is first. I have been involved in budget preparation for a Fortune 500 company, I am aware of how base line budgets are planned and written. Many support census positions are not as necessary as police and fire and could be taken out of the budget. In our current age of high technology, computers can crunch numbers and keep track of essential data necessary to operate municipal businesses. If our municipality management really wants to give customer service to us citizens, who are the taxpayers, they should cut administrative census positions first when economic downturns occur. All law enforcement, correction and detention officers, dispatchers, EMT and firefighters census positions must remain a priority. Crime never goes away. In our current situation, citizens and businesses need protection. Being a retired senior citizen, my motto is public safety must be our No. 1 priority.
The way I read the article is in 2011, fees may go away. The bill I received was Dec 15th 2010. They didn't state if my bill was for 2010 or 2011, but I assume since it was billed as dues in 2010 it had to be a 2010 bill.
The reason the county is in the black now is the same reason it is in the black every year at this time. It is in the black because taxes were just collected, not because of the small fee. Do the math and you'll see the fee will take several years to get us in the black, not one year.
I don't fully understand all the venom about Jay Mathews. Our problem did not build up under him. Our problem occurred like the current poor health of the USA, over many years. While things are still a mess, it is not entirely Jay's fault. Mathews walked into this mess. His real guilt is not acting fast enough and not communicating.
Barnesville poured money into the water system, then Carters left, and to use the increased water production capacity Lamar decided to expand the water system. Nobody ran the numbers to see if the expansion would pay the infrastructure cost, and now we have that debt looming over us. We won't see Barnesville offering to bail the county out for what would have helped the City had it gone well.
Another problem is we have a community rat working hard against many existing small and medium businesses in the community.
Another reason for the run on the county water was all the planned subdivision developments that were on the books. I think I heard at one time in the 2006 to 2007 time frame there were 25 plus subdivisions being planned in Lamar County. As we all know now, alot of those didn't make it. I also don't understand the 'it's all Jay's fault' theory. He's been in office for 2 years and he supposably created all these problems. I don't think so. He is just the one with the dubious task of getting the county through this rough period. And it wouldn't matter if Einstien was running the county right now, this would still be a rough financial time for the county.
At the meeting, they said that they would be sending out new bills and getting the money back from the company that sent the first ones. Wonder if that happened, I know I have not gotten another bill and have not paid.
Lamar County schools are about 250th out of around 350 schools in our state. We are in the bottom third. This drives property values down, and it makes our community less attractive to businesses requiring educated employees. This is a large part of why we only get fast food, composting, and incinerating plants here.

“Increased spending in the schools does not mean better educated children.” So much truth in what you said. The only thing really accomplished with all the educational spending was better and prettier buildings and sports arenas. That does not increase the learning ability of the child nor does it make them want to learn more. Building a new high school is not going to make children learn any better; it’s only going to give them a nicer place to socialize. Money is available from the state to make existing structure renovations therefore; why try and tap strapped tax payers for more money with SPLOST. We’ve already seen a multi-million dollar sports project take place through SPLOST and THEFT. How much did this investment increase the GPA of students?
A child that wants to learn will do it in a barn. A child that could care less is much more apt to appreciate an improved Country Club of Attempted Teachings and Hopeful Learning. Teach those kids who want to learn but, build a boot camp to teach discipline to the others who only want to socialize. If parents can’t teach discipline to the kids, the foundation for learning will not exist.
And bring back the military draft. For those kids that persist in accomplishing nothing, the military is a good place to teach them how to get out of bed in the morning and go to work. Perhaps picking up paper on the side of the road all day will give an incentive to pursue an education. And finally for those that are adamant about being a leach on society, there is always prison. This just provides a quicker trip to place they are likely to wind up anyway.
Fire and ems fees. Not too much. You know, Teacher cuts. Education cuts. 4-H cuts. County cuts "150 workers". Never cut Law enforcement and firefighters. What need a fire chief? Where? Not Danny Henderson.

So the reason the county commish says the fee might go away is because "Controversy over the fees, and the complicated job of identifying property owners and defining their parcels"...How bout it would cost more to try to prosecute the people who did not pay the immoral, improper, and unconstitutional unrepresented "tax"? The truth sometimes is really the best policy folks, and what it comes down to is they did not want to fight this one out...I have no problem paying taxes when I know that my money is being spent on fair, necessary, and efficient services...Sad to see that Lamar County politicians are just as good at lying as the Washington D.C. crowd
I would like to say that I don't mind paying my taxes, but presenting a tax as a fee is dishonest and shows contempt for your constituents intelligence. If you can't balance the budget then raise the taxes and face the consequences! Quit building monuments for government buildings, a school need not have a million dollar plus auditorium, etc. Protect us, that is the role of government! Fire and police, prisons should be the last things cut yes even after schools!

How can I pay if I do not know how much I owe?
Do you all need a fire chief over there?
LOOK AT THE INCREASE IN THE SCHOOL BUDGET OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS. ARE THE SCHOOLS BETTER NOW THAT THEY WERE 5 YEARS AGO.
Increased spending in County Budget does not mean better Local Government.
LOOK AT THE INCREASE IN LAMAR COUNTY BUDGET OVER THE LAST FIVE YEARS. DO WE HAVE BETTER GOODS/SERVICES NOW THAT WE DID 5 YEARS AGO?
Cutting the school budget and the Lamar County Government does not mean a reduction in services! Cut the budgets back to 5 years ago and reduce taxes!
