Lamar schools, county offices closed Monday

Superintendent Dr. Bill Truby reported Sunday at 2:35 p.m. that Lamar County schools will close Monday due to the looming winter storm.

Classes at St. George's Episcopal School in Milner have also been cancelled.

Commission chairman Jay Matthews reported all county offices will also be closed but public works personnel will be on the job.

We do not know if Gordon College will be closed yet or not. As soon as we know, we will post it online. Thanks for checking.

Do we know approximately when we will get word on Gordon? I need to know if I need to get my daughter there now or not? Driving from Columbus, GA and need to hit the road real soon to avoid icy roads, so real important that we know something asap.

This is where the obvious meaning of assumption making an ass out of those who assume comes from. How about reality! If the ice storm materializes then the places are closed – if it don’t they are open. That wouldn’t be an assumption; that would be common sense: Something apparently lacking for a long time.

When you are hungry does someone have to tell you to eat? When you have to go to the bathroom does someone have to tell you to go? If the water looks deep and you can’t swim does someone have to tell you to stay out of it? Therefore, if the roads are iced over and ice is wrapped around the branches of a tree, do you need someone to tell you not to drive?

And if you are really worried about it and just can’t find the common sense ground, go with your first thought because that is usually the correct one.

People, make your own decision! Come on now, they have been telling everyone on tv not to drive tomorrow in the areas under the storm warning. Just stay at home,,,geez, why do have to have someone else make all the decisions for you.

When you have been counted absent in a class at Gordon because there was ice in your area and you did the commons sense thing, then you can spout off all you want about common sense. Sometimes Gordon forgets that many of us come from north of b'ville and do not cancel classes. We then suffer because of it.

Will Gordon college be open on Tuesday 01/11/2011 for classes?
