Lamar County High School head baseball coach Greg Williams plans to press simple assault charges against an umpire who struck him in the face Monday night at Aldora Field during a game between the Diamond Trojans and Crawford County.
Coach Greg Williams

Really?
Y u mad tho??
Get over yourself, its not like his name has been slandered beyond recognition.
And good shot on not beating the umpire down, Greg. Your job is too important to lose over an unstable idiot like the umpire.
They are sound proof and keep you out of trouble.
Again, in my opinion, the punishment should be or include a public apology from the player and the umpire at the next game. Seems like the coach was only playing the game; and at least was adult enough not to get into a childhood fight.
Just knowing a man like that is coaching the team should be enough to show the kind of character the kids in the team are learning. So they defended him? Big deal, anyone with a breath of sanity will defend the ones they love. That's character.
So someone said something the ump didn't like. The ump is NOT a kid, the ump should have conducted himself more professionally. He's the one held to a higher standard than the kids.
The ump was the one who showed himself to be an immature spoilt brat, maybe his mommy and daddy did a poor job of raising him.
Maybe people such as yourself should stop placing blame where it doesn't belong.
And maybe you should not say "none" have respect, because I know my nephew (who is on that team) has the utmost respect for his elders, the most wonderful manners and is the type who WILL defend those whom he loves and respects with his utmost strength and courage.
For you to say "none" is insulting not only to those team players who do hold themselves to high standards (and I assume that would be all), but also to every parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle and relative of every player on that team who does have great stength of character. That would place you just a tad higher on the same level as the ump, what a pity, your opinion is of no value at all.
The ump seems to the the only one lacking in manners and respect. I sure hope he was fired, he's not a good role model for any child or teen.
I'll tell you what Ryan's comment was...A teammate said "don't swing unless it was a strike".. Ryan stated, "I'm going to swing because he's going to call it any way.." That was not anything the Ump should have gotten so upset about.. I heard the other team/fans making comments about calls as well. We all do so don't get on your high & mighty horse. The UMP had an ATTITUDE ALL NIGHT & was making TERRIBLE calls. The Ump was ticked off because he had to be behind the plate. You can believe what you want but once again, some of you are commenting and you don't know the facts...Believe me, I do hold my children responsible for their actions..
As far as the team coming out onto the field.. a previous comment is exactly correct, they are family and will protect each other.. Maybe your team doesn't have that connection..that's sad. I get upset when someone is bashing my child, like any parent would do. Ryan will be just fine though. As for the comment on my job and getting yelled at..I don't get yelled at..so maybe you should look at yourself. Although I wish the incident had not happened, it did and there is nothing that can be done about that now but to move forward. I wish you all a happy day.
These players should be suspended by Lamar Co schools and the coach. It is not acceptable in any situation for them to go at an umpire. Even when they are in the right, they need to clearly understand it is not acceptable to act that way in sports or life for that matter.
Hopefully instead of focusing on a relatively insignificant game (it's just a game after all) the school will focus on the future of these players in life.
Here's a chance to prove Lamar Co is a good school system with correct values--they should not wait for suspensions from high school association.
Or whateaver it wus u b wonting to sez.
Dang - it's even difficult to write that way.
You still don't get it.
First, your son was very lucky that he was only restricted to the bench, because 99% of all H.S. umpires (including myself; I umpire both H.S. baseball and fastpitch softball) would have ejected your son. A few years back I ejected a batter in a girls' H.S. softball game for the exact same thing that your son did, only she was responding to her coach making the same remark that your son's teammates made.
Second, your comments regarding the umpire's "attitude" shows that you are completely ignorant of sports officiating in general and umpiring in particular. My oldest son is also an umpire and we both always want to work the plate (of course he is 40 years younger than me so he had better work the plate for his old man) and most umpires want to work the plate because it is where the action is and really defines how good an umpire is.
Third, NFHS Rules state that any player or bench personnel, are to be ejected with players to stay in dugout under the supervision of the coaching staff and adult are to leave the vicinity of the playing area.
Once again, you are lucky that your son was not ejected.
That's what's wrong with America today. People just want to be too damn politically correct about everything. Sometimes you just have to handle things the old fashion way. I'm not condoning what happened, but at the same time I'm not condemning the kids, either. If you look back in history, baseball brawls have always been a part of the game.
If a pitcher throws at a batter on his next time at the plate, after the hitter socked a homerun in his previous appearance -- what happens next? The dugouts empty, and everybody gets reprimanded in some fashion. Hell, that's just baseball. And, it has always been that way.
The season will end, and summer ball will come... And, the boys of summer can start playing the game again, that they love. GATA, LC BASEBALL TROJANS!!!
First, the batter swung at a pitch out of the strike zone and his players on the bench chided him to swing at strikes. Not being able to accept the responsibility that he swung at a pitch out of the strike zone, he tried to shift the blame to the umpire. He shouild have been ejected. No questions asked, no matter who he was directing his comments to. Sorry Mom, your kid started a fullblown mess. He shold have kept his mouth shut.
Next, the coach should have asked the player first what he said to the umpire to be ejected. Probably, the coach was ill at the time about losing 3-0 to Crawford County. He too, probably took out his frustrations on the umpire instead of disciplining his player.
Finally, the umpire should never hit anyone. Too much TV has caused a lot of problems. Coaches think that they can verbally abuse another human being because he is an umpire.
The player was wrong and should be suspended, The coach was wrong and should be suspended, the umpire was wrong and should be banned from umpiring, and finally the team was wqrong, no matter what circumstances to leave the dugout and they should be suspended. Try to get over this ugly, embarrassing incident and do not let iot ruin your program.
Good luck.
Hey UMP....Go Jump!
Susan, your son would get chased from the game by almost any reputable umpire for doing that. He crossed a line.
Yes, the umpire behaved bad but your son lit the fire. That's all I'm saying.
