Tornado was F3; relief fund established; federal assistance now available

The tornado that ripped through Lamar County early Thursday was been classified by the National Weather Service as reaching EF3 strength with winds of 140 mph.

Meanwhile a fund has been established through the Barnesville-Lamar County Community Foundation for storm relief. Donations are tax deductible and eligible for matching contributions from the Central Georgia Community Foundation.

Lamar County residents are now eligible to apply for individual federal disaster assistance.

We were approved for Federal Aide in Lamar County! Citizens can apply by calling 1-800-621-FEMA(3362). Go ahead and call now so your process can begin. If I can be of any assistance to anyone please call me at 770-598-9639.

Im guessing the EF 3 area was around the grove st area. Crawford Rd seems to be hit the hardest from what I can tell. Luckily there is not as many houses out there like there is/was on grove st.

I posed a question on my Facebook page about the possibility of local musicians (band, solo artists, etc.) coming together to put on a benefit concert to raise money for those who lost during this week's devastation storm. My vision is to hold an all day, outdoor concert featuring locals who will play out of the goodness of their heart. I'd like to see about getting Summers Field Memorial Stadium or some other large local outdoor venue to hold this at and give it a catchy name like BENEFEST. I am getting tons of positive response on my FB page and several local and area artists have already "committed" to play. I would like to hear more feedback on this. i think thats a good idea, ken. maybe the businesses around town could put up jars on their counters for any loose change people might want to drop in. i know there are relief funds set up already but sometimes just dropping in change is easier for some.

We need to thank the likes of Billy Campbell of Emergency Management for Lamar County and others who went on 24/7schedules to be sure we all were in good hands.
Anyone can give you the book classification for these storms, but being in them is a different story. The book fails to give you the terror that goes with those situation.

As hard as I have seen Sheriff's Office, Fire Dept.,Road Dept., Southern Rivers employees work I fully understand why I pay taxes, why I pay my utility bill and yes even the fire and ambulance fee. Thank you for a outstanding job, and leaving your families to check on us. It will never be forgotten! And I thank the LORD for protecting all those in the path of this storm, after seeing the homes it is only by the protection of GOD more people were not killed.

I know of someone who will try to get aide even though the storm did not go into Milner please verify that there was actually damage from the storm and not just someone trying to get something as I know this family will. I am just saying don't help these people because their place was an eyesore way before the storm.

Griffin Sunnyside was hit real hard also Brooks GA was hit hard im sure they could use some help Pondarosa Mobile Home Park in Grifin SunnySide section could also use help

I'm putting up a jar right now for change from my customers to leave to help in some little fashion of relief. Any one who wants to just stop by and donate, please be assured it will get into the right hands.

If you want to volunteer, go to the reliable mart. They have a tent where they will check you in and bus you to the worst part of Grove St. They make it VERY easy. If you have two hands you can help. Come with gloves, close-toed shoes, long pants, and sunscreen. It's really bad down there and anyone with two hands can help. Just check in--they want to make sure everyone is accounted for in the area.

The Church of the Nazarine on 341 is the drop off point for food and supplies,clothing Etc.Not sure of where you go to to voulunteer
to do hands on work. Dropped off some children's clothing today and looks like the response so far has been excellent.

Barnesville Nazarene Church has non parishable food supplies, clothing, etc... for the victims, also if anyone would like to help with clean up contact their church office. They are doing an amazing job helping people in the community!

Ken,
I support your idea, and the musicians who want to step up and perform, as they always do when needed - there are a lot of families who will be hurting from this tragic occurrence not only now but for some time to come, as will our community, ...and any financial assistance generated by this type of event could go a long way to help them recover. I would suggest giving a call to T.J. Imburger
Count me in, any way that I may be of help. I will look into a location, and get back to you!
Let's make this happen for these families!!!

I HAVE NEW CLOTHES ,SHOES, SOCKS, T-SHIRTS TO BRING THAT ARE EXCELLENT FOR GROWNUPS. WILL BE COMING FROM BALDWIN CO. GEORGIA. BRINGING SOME NON-PERISHABLE FOOD ALSO.

When are the people on Crawford Rd and Brooks Rd. going to receive any relief effort? I understand their is much need every were but it's time these folks get some help. If not for several neighbors and friends we could'nt even get to them. The road is still only opened to one lane and it's very tight. It seems as though all efforts have been on the people in town but these familys are devestated most lost their homes or have huge damage. At least 15-20 homes have been destroyed or severly damaged. My family was their on Fri. giving out food and Sat. we were their cutting trees all day but it's unreal how bad it is down here. Most still have no electricity. These people are still part of the community and they need some Love B'ville....

I understand the Guard is leaving and chamber is in charge, would appreciate an update from the source where to take goods, where to volunteer, most importantly what is needed for Mon. Tues. Wed.

Good evening. Starting tomorrow, the Chamber website (www.barnesville.org) will have forms available online and we also have forms at the office for anyone wanting to volunteer as well as anyone who needs help. The volunteers and the jobs will be matched up and deployed from the Chamber. Any supplies being given should also be brought to the Chamber. Clothing, hygiene and nonperishable food should be taken to the Church of the Nazarene. Please call the Chamber at 770-358-5884 with questions. All efforts will be made to help those in need. I have been getting great response on my Facebook page and have 10-12 local and area artists ready to step up and perform. Also working on a big name act to headline to help draw more folks. Words cannot express our gratitude for the outpouring of love and kindness that was shown to my family when my Mom and Stepdad's home on Piedmont Road was demolished by the tornado. We thank you all for your prayers, for help in the clean up, for providing my parents a home, for the food, and all of the water & gatorade, for your words of encouragement, for your heartfelt tears & concern, we were so touched by all of your acts. We thank God most of all for sparing my Stepdad. Our prayers go out for those who lost loved ones during this time of devastation and for those who lost their homes.

I want to personally thank "B.J." the paramedic who came to our assistance the night the tornado hit on Piedmont RD.My mother-in-law
Katie Arnold who is battling hodgkins lymphoma went into full cardiac arrest,After learning first aid and CPR years ago i was able to do CPR ON her AND GET HER breathing and stable . But it was BJ who as staying with us trying to get a ambulance out to our house as soon as possible, he ended up putting mom in his personel jeep to get her to the hospital thank you so so much BJ , MOMS out of hospital doing real good. PLEASE KEEP HER IN YOUR PRAYER

I would like to say I am so proud to live in Lamar county, we were affected by the tornado, and have received so much help and support.... There are still good people in this world.... Thank you to everyone that thought of us ....Crawford and Brook area...

Chery is right,I am so thankful to be a part of Lamar County. It re enforces why I moved here in 2000. A small town of caring people. Whatever your political beliefs, let tragedy strike and everyone comes together to help the ones in need. Thanks to Rock Springs minstry, " Hands of Hope". I called the church about my moms house on Jackson Rd. and men showed up within 25 minutes with chainsaws so she could get to her car. Thanks to the gentleman James that used a bulldozer to move the trees back so my mother could get out of her driveway. And last of all, thanks to Commissioner Thrash for scheduling a group of men to cut the rest of the trees down that had fallen and carrying them to the front of the road. I can see my mom's house from the road now, unstood of fallen trees and it it safer for my mom. ( She has a hip replacement) Oh yes, my mom said a lady came by from the Chamber of Commerce to check on her Sunday and Monday. Thanks to everyone!!
