The one trend to emerge in the aftermath of the killer April 28 tornado here is this: many of those impacted by the storm are too proud to ask for help.

If only you commisioners were so proud. When you get in finacial trouble....handle it. Instead of running for another taxpayer handout. Sounds like most of the tornado victims are proud hard working americans that are use to dealing with their own problems. Not use to Government benefits. Take notice!
I applied for FEMA over the phone and 2 people came to our devistated and non liveable home before the FEMA team set up here. I was DENIED assistance through FEMA because I do have insurance and NEVER ONCE has FEMA mentioned a deductible reimbersement, not once. I have actually gotten snide comments in regards to my being in a better off position that others because I have enough common sense to insure my family's belongings as best I can. I was not offered an application from the chamber even though they are well aware that our home was destroyed ... was that because I had insurance as well? I have decided that I do not want a damn thing that is under the control of people who are looking down at me for some reason. The wonderful people who have donated to this effort need to be made aware of how the victims of the tornado are being made to feel. It is not necessiarly pride, it is more in regards of how we are being made feel like we have no right to ask for help.
Yep we filed for FEMA 2 and all we got was a rejection letter. Stated we had insurance so we could not get any help from the goverment..... Like everything else the Hard working people get screwed once again
so the feds are miffed as to why people don't want them around.
Perhaps folks are on to them...the feds are corrupt lecions just waiting to get their claws into our freedom. Way to go Lamar County....great volunteer effort...great effort in taking care of our own.
I am sorry that you feel that way, It's Me. Those of us who have never asked for any help already feel bad enough when forced to do so. Then to be made to feel ashamed...well, it's just cruel. Please, ask for assistance and to heck with what anyone may seem to think. I want my tax dollars to go to people like you (and me), please insist on getting what you deserve. Anyone is casts judgment on storm victims will be judged equally when their time comes.
I say take everything you can get from these vultures. They sure don't mind taking it from you on payday. Do you think the illegals or the people not willing to lift a finger to feed themselves feel bad while sponging their welfare check?
Apparently Commissioner Glass you might have been "one" of the first on the scene, but where were you after that? I didn't see you in your district checking with your people that got hit hard from the tornado. If you had been visible walking around during the days of the cleanup, you would have found out alot of people were denied any relief from FEMA because of being insured. Ask for the letters we received after FEMA came by our homes or what was left of them stating we were not eligible. One family I know on Brook road was not insured and only received 400.00 from FEMA. If it wasn't for their friends and neighbors, they still would be seeing daylight through their roof. Get your facts straight before you make statements in the paper about us lamar countians. And to think I voted for you. We hardworking taxpaying citizens all know the government giveth and taketh away. Nothing is free from the government. Especially to the ones that work and pay the taxes.
We take care of our own around here! Did you happen to notice how quickly folks jumped to action and began the recovery process. Hundreds of VOLUNTEERS donating their labor, money, heavy equipment, etc. We didn't stand around pointing fingers and waiting on CNN to show up so we could blame someone and beg the federal government to "save" us. Most victims I know (who are responsible, hard-working, tax-paying folks) kindly say thanks but no thanks to FEMA and other government entities because of the hassle and the condescending attitudes of those administering certain programs. I am sure the response to FEMA would be a lot different had the tornado struck a different area of the county.
I am still relocating with my children and working to make sure I do not lose my job and am able to provide for my family. It is really sad that people here who were not actually part of those devistated feel that they need to cast any type of judgment but they are. Who on earth decided to let people like this control the donations anyway? And I never saw this Charles Glass person either. He certainly didn't show up at our place and offer any assistance (yes, I voted for him as well) and neither did anyone else for that matter from our local agencies (except for Nancy Thrash calling me to check on me) until the Sunday after the tornado. The only people I saw were the friends of our family that came to help and utility trucks.
NOTE: I'M NOT MAKING JUDGEMENTS - but it's just a shing example of people who are responsible get shafted by the government while those who are irresponsible are taken care of and provided handouts - and paid for by those same responsible people who were denied assistance.
commissioner glass is actually taking up for his district... now that's a shock! all i have heard is how he refuses to listen to peoples concerns... maybe this is an eye opener for him and will start to listen to what the people of this county have to say... he is just as crooked as the rest of them
I am not suprised given the negative perception toward "entitlement" programs that are supposed to exist for this very purpose. We have judged an entire group of people based on the bad actions of a few.
Pride is a double edged sword. I encourge people who have been affected by this disaster to seek help if you need it WITHOUT shame.
Mr. Glass, I am having second thoughts about you. I voted for you, but now I am wondering if all I did was add to status quo.
Some of your statements make me wonder if you remember what elected you. I hope you will go back and look again. I grew up here and we were always taking care of ourselves. Maybe you could learn that. Also, why so many statements that appear unfounded?
Seems like Mr. Glass should have kept his comments to himself. This is obviously a man that has no clue whats going on. If he really knew what was happening the title of this article would have been "Commissioner disappointed in FEMA response". But, as usual, this is just another example of how our commissioners are completely clueless when it comes to the workings of the Lamar County citizens.
So who's gonna pocket that $100,000 that no one seems to need? This is why I'm willing to volunteer my time or buy someone groceries instead of handing money over to some group.
glass is part of establishment look who put him in office matthews got brown out cause he wouldn't go alone with their plan. ok I ran against Burnette and lost cause he cheated on absentee ballots and I was proven to be right they even got fined for what they did not reported like it should but when I tried to do right never gets reported I will be back most know who I am now we would not be in this predicament if I were elected, however this election would not change according to Secretary of state wonder why she not there anymore ha. ha. remember a lot of people are going to bash me cause they don't want better for this county they want to keep the working class down and dependent I PROMISE I AM ABLE TO PULL THIS COUNTY OUT OF THIS SITUATION WE ARE IN however it doesn't come without a price and I WILL NOT PLAY POLITICS I CARE ABOUT THE PEOPLE NOT GOOD OLE BOYS AND WHAT THEY WANT AN NEED JAY I WILL SEE YOU SOON YOU KNOW WHO I AM WE TALKED AN YOU KNOW I WILL BEAT YOU LOOK WHAT YOU DID after no one ran against you put these additional taxes on the citizens of lamar county why didn't you do this before qualifying was over had a good teacher well this is going to be over the people are feed up
Onstood of using Truth you should have gone with Nobody. Who do you think you are using this blog for your own personal political agenda? Who cares who you ran against? You apparently lost. Get over it. This isn't about Jay Matthews, Burnette, or Brown. It is about the statements Comm. Glass made to the HG. Why don't you just pay for an ad in the hg if you still haven't gotten over being the loser in an election. The only reason Karen Handel is not Secretary of State is because she gave that postion up so she could run for governor. Go buy a pacifier and suck on it.
"...many of those impacted by the storm are too proud to ask for help."
What?
FEMA denied in writing any assistance here, saying we had insurance after their investigation. Never mind the State Farm insurance adjuster has not arrived YET.
"I applied for FEMA over the phone and 2 people came to our devistated and non liveable home before the FEMA team set up here. I was DENIED assistance through FEMA because I do have insurance and NEVER ONCE has FEMA mentioned a deductible reimbersement, not once"
Yep, same for us. Just worthless government being worthless. The remarks by this Glass character reveal why local government is in the shape it is.
The Bible says you can keep your mouth shut and let people think you are stupid, or open it and remove all doubt. Mister Glass would do well to take this advice.
i hear alot about thrash and glass but what about mathews, hern, and horton. are they doing anything or staying out of the story? two commissioners have been bashed or knighted so it looks like the others just want to just avoid the bashing part.
Punctuation helps me with ciphering the written word.
You didn't help your cause with the finger-pointing and lashing out.
I want a calm controlled person in office. You seem like you have an axe to grind.
If you need help seek out the local churches and don't be embarrased to do so. This situation was not your fault or anyone elses. The Nazerine church on the southside has more than enought supplies and needs to get rid of it. FEMA will make you payback the help they give you. It is not free help.
I am also dissapointed in Charles Glass, I was so looking forward to someone looking after the tax paying citizen. Have you received your assessment? How can the value go up? Get ready for a 2 mill increase. Bend over.
Even though Comm. Thrash is not our commissioner, her husband was driving her around and she wanted to know if everyone was ok and gave us information who to contact and took our names down. I was really impressed when someone told me she had just had major surgery and was supposed to be home in bed. We need more commissioners that are visible in their districts unstood of reading in the paper about how they care about their district. Actions speak louder then words, "Commissioners." You need to humble yourselves and get off of your throne and communicate with the people that voted you in. Pride is a terrible thing, isn't it Comm. Glass? Look in the mirror.
after unscrambling this jumbled up attempt at typing and trying to make any sense of what you wrote....I have a headache and hope like hell you don't run for anything!
Walter, I will email you. My name is on record already in the thank you message for the tornado heros and other misc posts on here. FEMA isn't the only UGLY we are having to deal with in Lamar County.
First of all I am embarrassed to admit I voted for you, It wont happen again. I to was in the path of the tornado, we live in the Brook Rd Crawford Rd area. I did apply for FEMA as I am not TO PROUD,and I was denied due to the fact I to have insurance, I was happy and very grateful to see the dumpsters in our area but those to were pulled away after a few days. Its sad to know that we pay our taxes to live in this county and this country, but when we have a major disaster we cant seem to get any help, then you have thew nerve to say its cause I am too proud. You have alot of nerve!!!Hope you dont run again cause you just lost alot of support. But if you ever get hit by a tornado I will gladly come help you clean up your property, ya know why??? Cause I am NOT TO PROUD!!!!!!!
Hey Cheryl,
How are your horses doing? We had to relocate ours that were at home when hit by that tornado and Sierra and I had to relocate as well and are still trying to get all of that done. They never even managed to get dumpsters in my area on Jackson Road even though I kept asking. It is a damn shame how most of us are being treated .. especially if we had the common sense to have insurance. If you need anything, please let us know. Colleen has my cell number. Marla
I am so sorry for the devastation you folks have endured through this storm but got to say y'all are killing me! Where in the article above is Charles Glass quoted as saying you were too proud? The article was written by Mr. Geiger. The quotes I see from Mr. Glass only states FEMA is closing down because they are not getting the response they anticipated, that you might be reimbursed for deductible and the Nazarine church has not had many folks come in for help!
And, as far as the denials because of insurance, go check the FEMA website. It specifically states you will not receive FEMA assistance for anything covered by insurance. I would bet this is how they have operated for years. I totally disagree with it their policy but it has NOTHING to do with Mr. Glass, Barnesville, Lamar County or the tornado that ripped up this community.
So are you telling me the people in New Orleans didn't get assistance from FEMA if they had insurance? Bull.. We all know better than that. After people got on radio and TV they sent in the calvary to help. They gave out FEMA credit cards to. The only way you get any help from the feds is to holler the loudest. If you are quiet nothing happens for you. If you have insurance you can forget it, you will get no help. Ain't that a crock? If you're too dang sorry to get insurance that's alright, Uncle Sam with help you out. There is something wrong with this picture. You're doing a heck of job Brownie!
If the chamber is handling the donated funds for the tornado victims there should be some sort of accountability report made available to the public showing where the money is going.
I don't mind giving to the local relief effort but I want my money to go to the effort and not in some slush fund that helps pay for Buggy Days and/or BBQ & Blues or one of their various other alcohol soaked pet projects.
Walter, how about asking the tough questions and have the chamber officials show you exactly where the funds are going?!
Heres another thought as we are cleaning up and tring to put our lifes back together, oh and did I mention continue to work. We are supposed to find time to go to the chamber to apply for assistance??? Why cant they come to us, not a hard path to follow, Red Cross does it...
This will get all of our Lamar County homeowners back on there feet. I will continue to help on Saturday cleanups and pray at Sunday service for a speedy recovery.
A God made occurrence of this magnitude effects all in a community. I am very proud of what I have seen Lamar County be able to accomplish in a short time frame. People have all come together to accomplish one goal! That goal is what everybody wants and all should strive to accomplish. This bickering needs to come to a stop! Lets get our county back right. If you are scared of fighting your insurance company or ignoring what FEMA has to offer you may need to except the fact you are where you are. Wake up!
"So are you telling me the people in New Orleans didn't get assistance from FEMA if they had insurance?"
NO! I didn't post anything about New Orleans or Katrina!!! I stated that according to FEMA site, you should not shocked or upset that they don't give assistance for things covered by insurance. I also stated that I do not necessarily agree with that policy.
As far as Katrina, the only thing I KNOW personally is based on a friend's parents whose home was destroyed in Mississippi. They had insurance and were not given a FEMA trailer or other assistance. They used insurance money to purchase a fifth wheel camper and set it up for temporary housing. But, they did not go on national TV whining, complaining and blaming the gov't. What do you KNOW as fact about FEMA and those in New Orleans???
Are you people reading the same article I am? If so, you should take the time to read it again. Mr. Glass didnt say anything out of the way...Walter wrote that article. What Mr.Glass said is in quotes.
I understand some of you are angery but you are placing your anger on the wrong person. Blame the Federal Govt. It is set up to help those who have never paid their way for anything. Those who have worked and paid taxes always get the shaft. If you want to compair this with Katrina, look at the majority of people who needed assistance. Im sure they have received govt aid their entire lives. All of the entitlement programs need to stop. When that happens, maybe will all get treated equally.
I dealt with the system in the Flood of 94. FEMA is set up to help the local GOV not us.
If you have a job and are doing what a good tax paying citizen is suppose to do well, your out of luck. If you have no job and are on welfare and food stamps they'll rebuild your home with a grant. Those with a job have to go through the SBA and get a loan. The more money you make the higher the interest rate.
Red Cross was another lesson. I've never give to them after 94. You have to register with them first before FEMA. Then if they spent $10,000 and raise $100,000 well guess what. they just made $90,000. They will not give the "profit" to the victims.
This is how it was in 94.
Relief Fund.
They should take that $100,000 and divide it among the victims that lost their homes. County officials know who they are. The ones with destroyed homes not those that lost shingles or sheds.
You need to purchase a copy of the Herald Gazette from last week and read the entire article. Glass said , some of the lack of response to aid could be attributed to pride. Buy a paper and read it for yourself. If Glass had been wearing out shoe leather, going to the houses in his district that were hit, he would have found out the truth unstood of hanging out at the gym with the FEMA employees.
I KNOW for a fact that New Orleans actually did NOT get hit by Katrina and yet all of the media efforts focused on one city. They were flooded by the city's own stupidity and lack of planning. I am not saying that those residents did not deserve help but I am tired of seeing it being said to have actually been hit by hurricane Katrina.
Tired of Tornado Hell... Is there no end to this?
Normally you won't hear me complain... But today I think I've had my limit.
Tornado took my house away. My insurance gave us a check for the mortgage, we did what the mortgage company told us to do and they still haven't paid off the mortgage and they have had it in their hands since May 10th. We can't even start to rebuild until we have a clear deed for the next mortgage Amazingly it's acceptable to roll us in the dirt a little more every day. I've had so many brick walls thrown up in my face I shouldn't have any teeth left. If it hadn't been for friends, family and churches we couldn't have made it. FEMA hasn't helped, somebody tell me why we have them? They spend more time telling me I am denied because I had insurance and insurance doesn't cover 8 acres of trees layed down on your property. Insurance doesn't cover bulldozing. Doesn't anyone understand that we lost it all. My income is too high even though I have NOTHING at all to show for it.Everything was blown away. Why does it magically seem that money must be flowing from somewhere to survive.
FEMA says they can't do anything until my mortgage is paid. Why? They had renters that didn't own homes that they helped with Rental assistance but since I have a mortgage I have to pay it off and have a letter of denial from my insurance company before I can be considered for rental assistance or to even help with the cost of chain saws.We could not get help because we were buying our home. We just lost our house and all of our belongings. At what time would you think someone would need help? Would it be then or 3 or 4 months down the road? You will like this, before they will help with the chains saw... guess what... I have to have the papers from the mortgage company saying that my mortgage has been paid for and that it is clear. Amazing. Everything hinges on getting that piece of paper that the Mortgage company doesn't care about sending me anytime soon. I assumed when I overnighted the paperwork and check to them so they would have it on May 10th that it would all be handled quickly like at our local bank. Nope. They put it in escrow and acted like we never told them anything. So I didn't send the May payment in ( they now owe me) So they were very gracious and sent us intent to foreclose papers for being late 30 days. I had to call an attorney. My husband paid May and june so we wouldn't be in foreclosure, still haven't heard from them. They told me that it would be in July sometime before they settled with us. 30 days from the 1st of June and then and additional 10 days for an overages to be paid. That means I won't be able to even think about building until Late July.
FEMA called me the other day to tell me they still didn't have the paperwork from the mortgage company and then went over our request.
Now this is FEMA,they go to disasters, right? He asked my why did we get a generator? I said well, There was this tornado that came through Barnesville on April 28th about 1 am and it took out our house and we had no electricity and we had to use power tools to try and secure the sight.
Then he said, Why did you get a chain saw? And I said There was this tornado that came through Barnesville on April 28th about 1 am and it took out our house and we had 8 acres of trees layed out on our property, house , yard and driveway, roadway. We had to move them.
Then he asked, Why do you need replacement for eye glasses? And I said There was this tornado that came through Barnesville on April 28th about 1 am and we woke up our grandaughter at 12:55 and she didn't grab her glasses when she came out of the bed while trying to take cover to keep from dying from the tornado and The tornado blew our house away and her glasses were in it.
I tell you all of these brick walls are getting very tiresome. I am mentally exhausted.
There are numerous forms to sign and fill out. Be careful what you sign even for the Small Business Administration. There are a few things in print that you really need to read. You have to be willing to surrender ( assign) all of your insurance proceeds to them first.
There is no one that seems to be able to say yes to anything.
Is there no end to this Tornado Hell?
I am ready to just walk away from it and leave it all alone.
I don't even like to go back to the property with all the crap we have to go through to get anything done.
The people on the other end of that phone don't care, they really don't care. It hasn't happened to them yet.
They don't know of the long hours of cleaning up and going through the rubble. Being to exhausted to sleep. Can't hardley put one foot in front of the other.
The only way I can describe it is that I am in mourning and the pain is deep. Only those that are going through this know what I am talking about. I know God will see me through it and he will. I couldn't have made it this far if he were not there to hold me in his hands. I wish others didn't feel the need to kick and roll us around in the dirt again.
Cathy, well said! You are so right. I think you need to post the name and phone # of your mortgage co and let the people of your community give them some Tornado Hell to get your mortgage released immediately. Its the least they can do and to give them Hell till they do, is the least we can do. You have suffered too much already from things that you had no part in creating. Go up the "food chain" at the mortgage co until you can get someone that has the ability to fix it. Come'on bloggers -- get the phone number and giv em hell. They still will not be as miserable as Cathy and her family -- but at least they deserve it! Sounds like a good story to me for the HG, Walter! Hang in there Cathy.
This is appalling.
Cathy, I agree with ANON, I would like to know who the mortgage company is since I would like to phone and email them to let them know that I think their business practices stink.
So sorry for all your trouble, you and your family are in my prayers.
I totally understand your frustration i still can't get any help to remove trees. But that is ok cause i really didn't expect any help. It will take some time but we can do it. We just have to stay strong and not expect too much from others. Speaking of funds..have you seen any of the funds collected for the "Tornado Victims".
Why is it that nobody seems to think that the victims that lost shingles don't need any help???
I lost a total of $14,000 or more in personal property due to water and mold damage. Our home is still under repair on the inside. Let me paint a picture for some of you...It was raining hard inside our home. Nope our home was not totally lost, but we are still in need of help just like most others. Disappointed to know some of you don't seem to think we need any help from the relief fund. Cathy said it right...Nobody will fully understand the needs we all have unless they have been through this themselves.

A 3rd grader can write better then that!
Good Heavens truth on...you need higher education. ((GEZ)).

Cathy, I agree with ANON, I would like to know who the mortgage company is since I would like to phone and email them to let them know that I think their business practices stink.
So sorry for all your trouble, you and your family are in my prayers.
