It’s football season and this week I feel compelled to share a bit of the local history of the gridiron game as discussed on Facebook’s Barnesvillle Memories page.

A football article in Lamar County that lacks the name that epitomizes the game of football...he played at BA, was a WR, and wore #86.....cant believe you didnt mention his name!

Don't forget, Bobby Bowden said his Junior College team from Douglas, Georgia, played the roughest games of their careers against the Gordon Military Bulldogs in the mid-60's.

I didn't realize that but makes sense. My college coach, Bobby Pate, played for Bowden at SGA and probably was involved in some of those games.

Doug McGee played on the 1962-63 Gordon Military Jr. College team matriculating to the Miami Hurricanes for the 65-67 seasons. His TD beat the Dogs in 1966.

Nice article Ken, but the statement about the last team from Barnesville to play for a state championship must refer to high school teams.
In 1950 and 1951 Gordon Military College won the state junior college championship.

bobby bowden and south ga college made their appearence n the early 50s not the 60s. i was there.

I played with Doug McGee at Gordon and we were on the same American Legion team, Post 50, in College Park, Georgia. I was the quarterback on the 63 team and went on to play baseball at Ga. Southern.
Doug passed away a few years ago. A very talented football and baseball player and great team player.
