Oscar Wimberly tournament set

Lamar County will host the second annual United Bank of Barnesville Oscar Wimberly Holiday Classic tournament at the high school gymnasium. The tournament is named in honor of legendary coach Oscar Wimberly who joined the Lamar County school system from Booker High School when the local schools were integrated in 1970. Coach Wimberly was the first head football coach at Lamar County but stepped down after two seasons to head up the basketball program where he coached over 30 years. He continued to work in the system for several years after his retirement from coaching.

ITS GOOD THAT A SPORTING EVENT IS NAME IN HONOR OF COACH WIMBERLY ! COACH WIMBERLY WAS MY COACH IN BASEBALL,FOOTBALL TRACK,AND BASKETBALL FROM 1965 THU 1969 MY SENIOR YEAR AS A BOOKER HIGH TIGER AT BOOKER ELEMENTRY AND HIGH SCHOOL.

I just love ole' coach Wimberly. I was in high school in the 80's and coach was my health teacher. He is a good person. There will never be another coach quite as good as he was. His wife, Mrs. Wimberly was a teacher of mine too. Shes was a very kind last herself.

When I was in school, Coach Wimberly was the boys basketball coach. Even though I did not play basketball, I always thought a lot of him and enjoyed chats we would have. I have said for years that the LCCHS gymnasium should be named to honor him but he once said, "You name buildings in memory of dead folks. I ain't dead yet." Although I hope he lives for many more years, I still would like to see the gym named to honor him. Something like THE OSCAR WIMBERLY EVENT CENTER.
