City wreck results in multiple injuries

A very serious traffic accident Monday night at the intersection of College Drive and Spencer Street in Barnesville resulted in numerous injuries. At least two people were sent to the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon.

I want to see a traffic light put there! I plan to bring it up at our next City meeting ONCE AGAIN. I have been informed that this has been discussed many times before and that the DOT does not consider this necessary. However, with all the out-of-town, young drivers on our Gordon campus, IT IS VERY NECESSARY! How many have to die before the DOT would deem it necessary? If money is a factor, which I am sure is, then; at least put a 4-way stop there. I witness wrecks there all the time. THERE HAVE BEEN TWO WITHIN A 24-HOUR PERIOD TODAY ALONE........(LAST NIGHT AND AGAIN THIS MORNING). Mitch's body shop just keeps sweeping up the pieces and hauling off the cars.

there needs to be a 4 way stop right there even though it my be inconvenient, but we gotta protect our out of town aggressive young drivers and the citizens of barnesville, maybe even speed bumps my help who knows

Take the light from that stupid cross walk over the underground tunnel and place it there. That is ajoke waiting for people to cross who are NOT in a hurry.... When they walk infront of you after the light changed, you tap the horn they flip you the bird. Really, that it the stupidest place for a light!!

It is easy to see both directions. If people would just take their heads out of their a$$ or put down their cell phones for a minute and look both ways, there would be no accidents here. Why put a redlight here? The only place on this rd that needs a light is at the highway at the chevy place.

what happened to the million dollar tunnel underground that the students are suppose to use? Remember, they blocked off that part of the road for YEARS to make this tunnel, and they are not using it!!

I drive that way all the time. I never have an issue. And, really, in this town their should be no reason to have a problem. I find it hard to believe this is a problem just with the college students. Yes, they play their music to loud and they like to jay-walk/take their time crossing at College and Stafford. However, it seems much more likely that it is a combination a bad, self-centered, self-serving drivers from both from in town and out of town that cause the problem. There is nothing you can do to protect yourselves that from that sort of behavior. If people won't pay attention and be care now, then a light or four way stop or traffic light won't help.

NO reason for a stop light anywhere there isnt one. If you pay attention to the vehicles that are coming, you will not get into a wreck. Thats the bottom line.

I totally agree. We do not need another red light there. Why did we build a cross under if the students are not going to use it. They don't even try to cross without the light being red, they just push the button! So aggravating!

There was another accident there this morning and no fog was around to be involved. I agree that there does not need to be yet another light there when the majority of us have no issues with visibility at that location. I hate driving by Gordon as well with students constantly pushing the crossing button when they do not need to and holding up traffic. Many of them do simply walk out as if they own the road without regard to the light. Years ago there was a road relocated to accomodate this campus yet we still have issues. Why on earth did they build on both sides of the road anyway? This accident possibly had nothing to do with a student but the area seriously needs rethinking.

Remember that evil president that Gordon had for so many years, Well he built that tunnel basically as a private walk way to his office. The tunnel is nowhere near where the student traffic is

Students, staff and faculty do use the tunnel, all the time. Students use the crossing light, that is not at the tunnel, because it is closer to the dorms.

The accident Tuesday morning involved a young out-of-town, commuting Gordon student and an elderly local woman. I witnessed the whole thing. There have been a total of 29 accidents at the intersection of College Drive and Spencer Street within the last four years; and there has been a fatality there also, per police statistics I have received.

When I'm crossing that intersection at a few minutes after 5pm, I have to be watching closely. The students think that's a 4 way stop intersection for some reason. And they will pull across right in front of you without a second thought.
Need to find another way home, I suppose.

Coming off of Spencer street, next to the gated parking lot, you have to pull out onto college drive to see around the Gordon College sign. No you don't have to pull all the way out into the street, but the college could place their signs closer to the buildings so that they don't interfere with the drivers line of vision.

Where have I seen this before? The ones who cross and don't care are the same ones who would pitch a fit if you do that to them.

I'm sorry but that junction needs at least 2 more stop signs. I had to go thru that junction on the way to work when I went to college there and crossed the street many times there. Its a horrible junction to try and get out from especially if you are sitting at the stop sign on Spencer street closet to the village dorm rooms. I cannot tell you how many times I sat at that stop sign and then gunned it onto the road so I could get on the road because I had been sitting there for so long and ended up running late for work. College drive is a busy road both by Gordon commuters, people who live on campus and the people of Barnesville, its a heavily used road and with students trying to cross it and families living on it to its just is not a safe road. It doesn't need another stop light (but the one on college road does need new lights because it is hard to see those lights) but it does need a stop sign on college drive and needs to become a 4 way stop. And in reply to the people saying the students don't use the tunnel, its used plenty it just sometimes takes a extra 5-10 mins depending where you are coming/going from, sometimes the cross walk is the easier and quicker path to go, if you don't like us pressing the light just so we can get across the road safely then take a different route.

So, if it was so bad, why didn't you take another route? If you were running late because you had to sit an extra minute at that stop sign, why didn't you leave earlier? If you were "gunning" it to get across the intersection, wouldn't that make you part of the problem?

Again, I go that way all the time. Every now and then I have to wait for the college road traffic to pass, but I have never sat their more than a minute. I have never been almost hit by anyone coming off Spencer or going down College unless I was not being careful. And I have no problem looking in any direction when stopped there (on either side).

It seems to me that carelessness at that intersection is the problem. I object to everyone that is careful being penalized because of the ones who are not. It is a straight road with no blind curves or blind hills. It is only "busy" (if you can call it that) at a few times a day for relatively short time frames. Drive carefully and don't assume the other driver knows what they are doing (or are being careful).

Why aren't the students made to cross thru the tunnel instead of on the street? Thats why that road was closed for years and millions of YOUR tax dollars were wasted.
