In July, our 10 county region will vote on a Transportation SPLOST to approve a 1% sales tax to fund transportation projects within our region.
The Lamar County Transportation Committee will be hosting two town hall informational meetings and you are invited to participate. The meetings will be held April 19, 2012 and May 24, 2012 at 7 p.m. at the civic center.

WHY?...I repeat, WHY? ..Why does Highway 36 need to be widened?
I drive this road everyday and traffic moves smoothly. This will be a multi-year project that will take a lot of private property to be used as right-of-way. Is there an expected housing boom or giant industrial development expected in the future?
I have noticed an increase in large garbage haulers that are probably coming down from Atlanta to unload their trash in some country landfill south of Thomaston. Truck traffic will increase and some housing will be taken.
VOTE NO on this future money pit boondoggle. I want to know WHY the Region 4 Reps chose this particular endeavor to spend money yet to be raised instead of other projects. I see a hidden agenda lurking behind this project. As I always say about government "improvement", NIMBY! Vote NO....Vote NO on TSPLOST!!

"bring back the Model-T and leave our Hwy 36 alone"
Transportation is consistently in the top 3 location factors for companies looking to expand into a new area through a new location or a relocation. It is not by mistake that economic development occurs along the routes of major transportation. Companies want to get their product to market as quickly and efficiently as possible, and if they are trucking - that means getting it to the Interstate. Highway 36 is our route to Interstate 75 and by providing better access to the Interstate, our community leaders are positioning Lamar County to attract jobs and investment. And by passing the Transportation SPLOST, everyone who passes through Lamar County and buys something along the way will contribute to this improved access - not just property owners through an increase in property taxes.
The natural progress of things is for liberty to yield and government to gain ground.
