Litter and ways to get rid of it were the topic of the day at the April 3 Barnesville city council meeting.
Councilman Mark Stone said there is entirely too much litter, especially along College Drive, which he attributed to Gordon College students

I envision a "mom van" driving down the street, while small hands throw their waste out the windows as they merrily sail along.
Three ways I can tell when Gordon is in Summer session:
1) I no longer hear the "thump, thu-thump-thump" after 11 o'clock at night.
2) There is no longer a cloud of cigarette smoke and groups of youths wondering around just the other side of the street from Gordon
3) The side of the roads are no longer lined with fast food waste, cigarette butts, used condoms (yes, this happened more than once) and other discarded items (clothes, paper, napkins, combs, feminine hygiene products, etc)
This is all from Gordon College, not Barnesville people. Anytime the school is closed on at a reduced student body level (like Summer session), none of this happens. It has gotten exponentially worse since Gordon went smoke free. So, I guess they get to be smoke free and all of us have become smoking zones. All Gordon did was shift this from being their problem to our problem.
After this weekend I have had enough. From now on when I see groups of college students loitering on the private property side of the roads I will be calling the police. Given some of the past history, have groups of youths just handing out off campus is asking for trouble. Let them explain to the police what they are doing.
As far as dealing with the trash/cigarette butt issue, perhaps Gordon should be asked to revisit its policy concerning no smoking on campus. They could set up smoking areas outside on campus (businesses usually do that for their employees). Likewise, they could include as part of their smoke-free policy that it doesn't mean the students can just walk across the street to smoke. How about telling the students they cannot stand in front of private property if they want to go off campus to smoke? Or, how about having students that get in trouble, are on academic probation or are found smoking across the street from the college without the permission of the home owner/renter be required to do garbage patrol around all of the streets surrounding, passing through or heading away from the campus?
Let the ones that are causing it clean it up!
Wake up people and smell the roses, don't you have anything else to do except complane !?
I find all this plus beer cans and bottles in my drive way every day but I have more important things to worry and complane about!
Find something better to occupy your time and leave the students alone plus be grateful they are here and trying to better them selves.
Which you should be doing also instead of whining.
How much are the students at Gordon improving themselves if they don't know how or don't make the effort to put garbage where it belongs? I should be grateful for lazy and/or stupid people littering our streets yards? You have a strange sense of what is admirable.
By the way, it is Gordon, not "Gorden", complain, not "complane", and themselves, not "them selves". Seems like you should be doing a little self improvement. And I find it ironic that you are complaining and whining about other people complaining and whining.
But, as Mark Twain once said, "It is a person of poor imagination who can only think of one way to spell a word."
