Local officials held their first town hall meeting about the upcoming July 31 Transportation SPLOST vote, explaining how an estimated $14.9 million in discretionary funds would come to Lamar County if the 10-county vote goes in favor of the new one cent on the dollar tax.
I'm struggling over how to vote. I'm sick of being taxed for every little thing and I see no benefits for my particular little corner of town. As a matter of fact, with the houses that have been abandoned on my street, and the drivers going down the road flinging trash out their windows, I dare say my area looks the worst I've ever seen it.
Yet tax burdens fall on us working tax paying homeowners.
SR 36 does not need to be 4-laned. Let's stop wasting money on "road improvements" and either leave it in the pocket of the taxpayers, or spend it on something we need. How about more deputies on patrol? How about another 911 dispatcher? How about better schools? How about more than one paid firefighter on duty at a time? How about maintaining the roads we already have? Has anyone driven City Pond Road lately? It's a mess. I'd rather see it fixed than any dirt road get paved.
