Lamar County has received confirmation that its $11 million in stimulus package road projects meet criteria. The next step is to see if it gets any money. News is expected in May.

"This will free up Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax money for other roads," -
The law is specific. When SPLOST is voted on, it must spell out to the voter what the money is being used for. It cannot be used for other projects until the voted on project is completed, completely.
Did you read? I think he is specially always talking about ROADS! Don't think the article says anything about spending the SPLOST on anything but roads!!!!! That is what specific SPLOST money he is talking about - ROADS!!! Nice try again though to get some %*$# started!
If SPLOST is supposed to be used for just roads, why it is building the new stadium and the new auditorium. The sign at the construction site clearly states 'your SPLOST tax dollars at work.' If this is true, what does the 1% educational tax that we pay get used for, and what does 65% of our property tax money that the school board get go towards?
Yes I can read. But you still don't understand. So, won't try and discuss a subject you are lost in.
Perhaps you need it in black and white if you can read with an ability to comprehend.
The 1% tax you refer to is a separate splost, and can only be used for the school buildings. It is a completely different splost that was voted on and approved.
Seems entertaining that the "city folk" want to talk about fixing minor things on their roads... when there's still people living on dirt roads with many holes, no ditches for the water run off, etc. Maybe you city people who want to complain need to ride out into the county & take a look at the dirt roads. The county's idea of scraping is to dump all the excess dirt into the ditch or make a big hump at the end of your driveway. So scraping does no good when the water has no where to go... I also have heard 1 person held up the paving. How can 1 person refusing to give up right away stop a paving project when the rest of the road agrees to have it paved???
No disrepect taken or intended either. I was just making the point that I believe in the article they are speaking specifically about SPLOST designated for roads. I think we all know what we are talking about just a misunderstanding of terms. I am just glad to see the new commissioners finally trying to do something!!!
that's why us city folks moved to where we live.... if we wanted to live on a dirt road and deal with all that crap we could have chosen that... but like most civilized people we choose to live where we should not have to worry about blowing a tire out leaving our driveway
Back to the topic...the county needs to refuse any federal monies. Federal "stimulus" results in the feds dictating what the county may or may not do and gives them a foot in the door to do other things. Keep the feds out and stay a sovereign state and county. If the roads need repairing, let a splost pay for it, then vote the splost out. We, as the people have that right and responsibility as free citizens.
The problem with your logic here is that once a tax is voted in, voting it out is near impossible. Currently Lamar County pays 7% sales tax; 4% to the state, 1% local option sales tax (LOST; and it is...), 1% SPLOST, and 1% educational. Every time one of them is supposed to 'sunset' there is a vote, and the threat of our property taxes going up causes it to be voted back in. I'm not opposed to progress, I just think gov't should be better stewards with our money, and stop throwing money at problems until it goes away, or becomes an even bigger problem.
Well, I prefer not to live in the city so that everybody in town doesn't know my business & what I'm doing or if I'm home or not. I can do what ever I'd like on our land & don't have to worry about nosy neighbors
Paul, that is somewhat my point. What you describe is the same model the fed govenrnment uses. Think about it...when was the last time a U.S. President repealed a law a former President signed? Before everyone jumps, yes, there are small laws they might repeal to give the masses a sense of accompishment for voting, or not, the current one supposedly in power. But I'm digressing.
My main point I was trying to bring out is, once you take federal monies, they insist on telling small government what they can or cannot do...not only with the money but in other areas. A temporary splost for the county to fix it's own roads is feasible. If WE THE PEOPLE write the law properly, the local officials hands would be tied.
A most unpopular statement that we can say to local public servants is "You work for us"....the people. We as the citizenry, I think have been conditioned to just sit back, watch another ball game and let public servants do as they will. They threaten to raise property taxes for the county...the citizenry should amass and tell them no. NO is a powerful word.

they can do what they want regardless of what the law says.
Do your own research. I provided you a link to get you started.
That's one of the problems today. People want other people to do there work for them. Perhaps it is time you became smart on your own.
No Disrepect intended.
