DOT will not change signals at dangerous intersection

The good news: paving, added lanes and striping on Highway 341 through Barnesville probably will be finished by the end of November, but mid-December is the extended deadline.

The bad news: The intersection where Highway 18 and Rose Avenue come into Veterans Parkway (341) will not have any changes in signals, meaning the east-west route is not scheduled for “green arrow” left turns.

"Michael Presley, Georgia Department of Transportation area engineer, told The Herald Gazette last week, “The engineering study doesn’t justify installing left turn arrows in that direction."

But somehow the GDOT was justified in spending $12 million for turn lanes to nowhere all up and down Hwy 341. I counted 12 of those fancy new turn lanes from the traffic light at Hwy 18 to the traffic light at Hwy 19 & 41 where 19 turns off to go to Zebulon, and 2 more that turn into church parking lots!

So, we can have accident after accident at the intersection at Hwy 18 and get no help, and they just help themselves to what they called "up to standard" turn lanes when I called them.

Too bad we cannot vote for those guys. They would be out of a job!

We need to know who to call and worry the hound out of them till they do something about it. Nobody else needs to die out there. PERIOD!

I missed something in my post... sorry. I meant 12 of those fancy new turn lanes that there is no road. They are turn lanes to the woods!

Michael Presley is who I talked with when I called and complained about the turn lanes and $$ spent on such a project. I don't remember the name of the engineer, but they need to hear from everyone who will call to complain. Then we will get something done.

And to top it all off, some IDIOT chose to put some fancy left turn markings in fromt of CVS on Rose Avenue at that light. I had extreme issues with that during Buggy Days since people did not see them and were preparing to side swipe me as I went through the light. That intersection is DANGEROUS. How damn hard is it for them to understand that?

That whole project was stupid, to me. If we can get enough people to call them and complain, some things might get done... but we have to do that. I did it... anyone else?

Found the card... the Preconstruction Engineer for this project is Bill Rountree out of Thomaston. Phone 706-646-6987. Michael Presley is another person in that office and is the person mentioned in the article above. Call them!

Everyone should look at the narrowness of turn lanes, curb height, and curb edge sharpness at intersections, such as near College Dr. and the four lane.

They have a narrow turn lane with a tall sharp edged curb. This is terrible for large trucks or vehicles pulling trailers, people trying to get out of someone's way to avoid them, or people who don't quite know where their rear wheels are following.

Whoever designed those tall, sharp, curbs and narrow lanes designed a hazard we will all live with for many years. There are already many tire marks on and over the curbs.

It's about as silly as the right turn yield signs at traffic lights GDOT seems to love. Some intersections have yield signs, while others do not. This makes people think making a right turn with a full green means they are compelled to yield to people making a left across traffic, which isn't the case according to written guides.

Two things: please paint the concrete islands bright yellow so I can see them. Second, please don't put any of those no right turn on red cameras at our intersections. Those have caught me twice in Griffin when I stopped, looked both ways and turned right on red like you can everywhere but there. Cost me more money than I had.

The intersection at 19/41 and Fayetteville Highway got me too, Annette.
We were talking about those cameras at church one day and I think that camera has taken photos of the cars of many of the ladies at my church!
That thing is a money-maker for some agency...
