On Thursday, October 25, 2012, an article in the Griffin Daily News reported that two women reported an odd odor at Tyus Park. The women reported they smelled ‘pot’ in the area. They reported this to the 911 Center and a deputy was in the area at the time. The women reported the ‘pot odor’ was coming from the patrol car. Sheriff Wendell Beam was notified of this report and an investigation began immediately. The deputy was interviewed and a canine trained in drug detection searched the patrol car and the area in Tyus Park where the incident occurred. A drug test was also administered to the deputy. There were not any drugs found in the patrol car, the area, or the deputy’s system. The source of the ‘odd odor’ was unknown.
