Lamar County seniors can stop calling the tax assessor’s office about the newly proposed school tax exemption the board of education put into motion. It is still in the study stages and the earliest it can take effect is 2014.

At least someone may get exempted from property taxes.

How about an exemption all of us? Aren't enough taxes acquired by the state and local government through other means?

Maybe if everyone would try to buy everything local you could see a reduction. If you go to Wal-Mart, you are just lining the pockets of our surrounding counties.

Support your local merchants.

Nice idea, but it never works that way. Government loves to implement taxes and hates to remove them. It's like crack for them. The more money they have rolling in (more people moving in, more business, more local shopping), the more they want. If the tax base starts to dry up (people buying elsewhere, moving away, etc), they want it even more. The only thing that will make a change is to put them on notice that we won't take it anymore.
