Barnesville's chickens have set the town a cluckin' with controversy. Some love them. Some hate them. Some say they are great with tater boats. How do you feel? (Open access poll inside.)
Put me down as "pro-chicken" as I think they are good for the town. I noticed when I moved here how few Big 'ol bugs Barnesville has. Now I think I know why. You have live-in, pesticide-free exterminators. And they are beautiful.
Nothing gets done about stray dogs and cats running around why worry about some darn chickens!! I rather see them running around then some stray dogs that could attack...They should have a leash law ALL over Lamar.
Agreed. Noone wants to hear that or to step in chicken poop when one walks freely in your yard either! Livestock should be outside the city limits. Just ask the Fitzgerald residents of the headache of their coveted chickens - the roosting, the damage the vehicles, and if one crosses the path of your vehicle(tickets)...
If you are hearing the chickens than you are also hearing that train that blows it's horn all hours of the night. These are birds. And aren't actually harming anyone or anything. I do think that they are even helpful on removing bugs from the ground.
The last time I read through the city ordinances, there was no mention of any particualr livestock other than swine not being allowed in a person's yard. Have they been rewritten? If so, I would think that whatever is roaming freely already would get a grandfather clause or something like that.
You honestly cannot be comparing the train whistle's blow to the animals' sound are you? These are people working for their living not so feeble excuse you are using to get bugs from the ground. Unemployment is through the roof, and you are making the train whistle excuse?! Chickens root up flower beds. Letting them roam freely in town, I am pretty sure the home owners of Thomaston Street, Greenwood Street and all of the other beautifully manicured lawn owners are not going to appreciate that.
Not to mention, the CDC warns about the bacteria associated in their droppings. While anyone can become ill from exposure to these germs, the risk of infection is especially high for children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems; for example, people receiving chemotherapy or who are HIV-infected. One of the most important bacteria you need to be aware of is Salmonella.Salmonella lives in the
intestine of infected chickens, and can be shed in large numbers in the droppings. Once
shed, bacteria can spread across the chicken’s body as the bird cleans itself and
throughout the environment as the chicken walks around.
Talking about the train whistle it is very annoying. I live on grove street and sleep with the tv on at night and you can hear the train blowing and blowing and blowing. It takes them forever to get thru town at night. When you have to up at 430am its makes a very bad night to keep getting woke up by the train. Instead of letting chickens run free they need to be caged up in the owners yard. If they make a mess in your yard track down the owners and sue them
Actually, the County and the City both have their own Animal Control. Here is the Animal Control number for the city:
Phone (770) 358-1087
Email poundpups1@hotmail.com
They even have a Facebook Page for you to access in case your animal happened to be picked up: https://www.facebook.com/BarnesvilleGaAnimalControl
Here is the website for Animal Control in general: http://www.lamarcountyga.com/animalcontrol.html
Nothing can be done about an animal that is neglected or a stray unless someone CALLS or ACTS.
Does anyone own these birds? I always wondered about their origin. I didn't know they did so much damage. The ones here just putter around and crow as the sun comes up. I must confess that I worry more about the skeletal dogs I see on the back roads often with skinny puppies following behind. I can't imagine letting your dog run loose when you live on or near a highway, and not using the free spay/neuter clinics when they have them. The bottom line, I suppose, is that God gave us dominion over the animals (if you believe as I do) and we are responsible for their care. I don't know what the answer is for the chickens. They may be with us always.
