The Georgia Supreme Court has remanded the case of Jamerson Mangrum back to Cherokee County superior court for hearings to determine if he received effective counsel during his December, 2005 trial.

I am the Mother of Katie Hamlin and Jamerson Mangrum was treated with a great counsel one of Marietta Ga.finest lawyers,I do not understand why they would waste tax payers money,he is guilty and needs to accept his life in prison.Please remember the victim is not Mr.Mangrum Katie Hamlin is the victim and our family, people forget she is the one dead and the Dna and lies from Mangrum were there.

My son knew this boy when he was about 15, when this boy went by a different name while here in Lamar county. I asked my son "Would this boy be capable of this crime?" and my son did not equivocate.
"Oh, yeah, this is one sick dude!", my son replied.
Mangrum is where he needs to be and I wish the court system would quit wasting our money with this nonsense.
Mrs. Hamlin-Tubbs, I'm so sorry that the Georgia Supreme Court is bringing this painful episode back. Accept my condolences on the loss of your daughter.

I wish I could "do the honors" this vile, wretched, waste of human- flesh deserves. I would torture every single nerve tissue in his body till he became numb to pain, follow up with the finisher... lead poisioning to his brain. Then, I would fix a sandwich and off to bed for me.

Thank you for all your comments and I would do anything for my only daughter Katie,I am a fighter and believe God will make a way for the pain in our hearts.It will be 7yrs on July 2 Katie was found MURDER.She lives in my heart everyday and has STOPPED Mangrum from hurting anyone else.Once again,

I am interested in the facts:
1. Where the 2 witnesses (in jail?)pardoned for their offenses for testifying? Civil or Felony?
2. What mind working person with an IQ over 50 would after hours of interrogation; blab to others locked up, they had committed a felony?
3. Was this 17 year old represented by counsel during the questioning by the officers of said county? They website stated: they had their man?
3. Who is Shay? Wasn't he dating this girl also @ the time; per Carolann's blog to Katie's brother, April, 2006?
4. So the neighbors were on their front porch watching for cars coming and going? at 2 am?

I have seen some very strange things happen in our judicial system.
Even in the case of DNA, being she was 15 and he was 17.
Who was at the location where Jamerson Mangrum and Katie were?
Were they questioned? INterviewed even?
Who said Rocha 20, arrested? Wasn't he out of the country? Who implied him in this tragedy?
Who was Jonathan Elkins, 20? Was he involved? Who saw him?
What did the toxocially reports show in the bone tissues?
Why was the change of venue denied, after all the news and media and even local sheriff's website information? It appears to have been very publicized to not seek an change of venue?
Did the neighbors see this boy when he arrived at his residence; since they were on their porch at 2am?
I'm just wondering where all these persons are now and what they are doing?
It's a sad loss for all concerned and God will have his day, I pray this child knew the Lord and her family directed her path in such a manner. I think loosing a child has to be an unbearable event.

Donna, Hello, it is Erin from the old neighborhood. Just read the article and am absolutely disgusted that he is receiving a new trial. He had more than effective counsel and I am so tired of attorney claiming ineffective counsel so that their client can get a new trial. This is one of the reasons I left the criminal law field. I hope the new jury is as smart as the first jury. I just lost a lot of the respect I held for Darran Burns, let me guess, this is court appointed so we are all paying for it

You are a VERY stupid person, I agree that this person belongs in prison, but what since does it make to put him in forever. He was 17 when he killed this girl. And what about the other people that were with him, no prison time at all because they rolled over on him. Their still guilty and just as sick as him but free. Castrate his butt and let him out in 10 years. There are other killers that don't go to jail at all look at the drunk driver from the NFL 30 days is enough?

My wife asked me the same question and I answered no. I continued that I would be in prison myself for killing the person and or family of someone who would do something like this to my daughter. And to A’shirley in#7.1.2 who so descriptively stated that I may sit and rot where ever I am…I’m in Iraq defending my right our right to have an opinion, what have you ever served you freeloading “POS”!!!

I'm sorry that this young girl was killed. You referred to her as a child, she was 15, if she was such a child where was her parents at 0200 in the morning and why in the hell wasn't this child at home at that hour. These things do not justify murder, but it poses some serious questions about the parents of this "child". If there had been responsible adult supervision chances are this could have been avoided. There are multiple victims in this crime, most of all the young girl who is no longer living.

Now you’re starting to think. Would it be cheaper to the tax payer to put him on death row where he has even more rights to appeals and live in a better part of the prison? I don't think the chair is used anymore. If you’re capable of rational thought you will get the right answers. If he lives to be 75 years old and he is now about 22 that’s 53 more years in prison, just say it costs $35,000 a year to support him that is $1,855,000 for the rest of life, is that fair to the tax payers. I don’t see him getting the chair at this stage. So we will pay for another trial and we will pay for him to be in prison forever. That is why I think it would be better to use him as an example, rehabilitate and reprogram him. Never let him completely out of prison but use him as a tool to show and tell young people of how and what not to do. Then he can work, educate people on what not be and do and give back to the tax payers and never be unsupervised. I still feel that castration should be used as an option.

I grew up with him and I always knew him as Jamerson, but I do remember him changing his name at one time but can't recall the name. I know it was something weird though which matched his personality.

I knew Jamerson pretty well throughout middle school. I've always knew him by Jamerson. We were sort of best friends. I heard about this and its hard to imagine someone I knew doing such a horrific thing to a young girl. I didn't know him very well after middle school because he moved away, but when I did know him, he was a nice person. What went wrong? Whatever did go wrong, I'm just thankful that he did move away and that it wasn't me or someone I knew on the receiving end of this brutality. I am sorry for the family of Katie and having to deal with such a horrible tragedy in their family. I hope Katie retains the justice she deserves against her killer. I am truely saddened and disappointed that Jamerson has done such a horrible thing. I only hope that if Jamerson WERE NOT the killer, that he would prove his innocence, but I am doubtful of that being a possibility.

You know we are a unknowing lot. Even in the case of J. Bene the small child who was actually killed in her own home; the police and citizens actually CONVICTED HER MOM AND DAD, AND now the Colorado DA has stated they have ruled them out entirely.**********

What a terrible loss, just like our soliders overseas fighting for our nations worthy causes and our freedoms to write freely. Had sad this is and what if this guy is truly innocent????? Any other missing girls or women found since this event?
Where is the guy's who were at the house where Jamerson & Katie went? What was the corner's findings of drugs & alcohol levels in the internal organs? Was that information had available?
Why wasn't this 17 year old Mirandized?
Is it commonplace for that sheriff's department to arrest a minor and question expertly, without counsel?

I feel that katies parents minds were clouded by her death and chose the first available target.I know how corrupt the Justice system around that area of Georgia.Canton Ga.,having hired Wallace Rogers jr.,a mentally incompetent attorney from cobb county,suspended from practicing law for a short while,back around 1992-93 as nothing more then a associate judge in the family courts to handle family court case overloads.Lord help all the families that went before Rogers.Anytime Rogers is involved in handling something,you can bet on it , things were not handled properly.Katies parents joe and donna hamlin were abusive and committed child abuse to a family member inwhich was covered up by a police investigator & cherokee county.It's documented,but not by law enforcement.Noone will find the truth by depending on law enforcement in that area of Georgia.I would like to see justice served just as much as anyone,but that can not happen under these corrupt conditions that Jamerson Mangrum had to face.

I studied this case in detail and even contacted witness back in 2005. This guy is innocent and no one actually killed this girl. All this boy did is have consentual sex with this girl...and she was his girlfriend. But the boys that did the dirty deeds and got rid of her body and set her on fire...were never even arrested.

Jimmy was my third attoney in my case...and I can tell you he has one foot in bed with the State. He continued to drag my case out until I lost everything and until the pressure killed my dear, sweet, beautiful...and very patriotic mother. My case drug on for over 50 months because of this attorney's games. And let me say something factual about Katie's mother...this woman is bizarre and her poor daughter was a result of her neurotic state of mind. This is a case that I studied in detail in 2005 and I even contacted witnesses and met with two of them to discuss this case. This kid was not guilty of this crime and he was only guilty of having sex with this girl. The two guys that actually disposed of her body and set her body on fire with gasoline (close to where James lived) were never charged and turned state's evidence against James.

Jonathan Elkins was the next kid they tried to railroad...I gave out FIJ (fully informed jury) pamphlets to the jury pool when Jonathan Elkins went to trial. I was almost held in contempt for it. Jonathan was acquitted in a few hours.

The case of Mr. Mangrum was sent back to Cherokee County for a hearing to determine if Jimmy Berry gave insufficient counsel. I can tell you from experience that this attorney has one foot in bed with the State and loves to play games with people’s lives...The hearing was in front of Judge Harris...and of course James lost and continues to serve a life sentence plus 80 years.

Bringing this painful episode back? You're kidding us. Someday you might get to read and hear about what your family has really done in the past.History seems to have a way of repeating itself. Sometimes to make things Right in a legal fashion,not corruption,so you cant say,"whew i almost got caught for abuse".A crime committed in the past,doesnt mean the truth cant be revealed.Just hope the FBI,GBI doesnt do their job,you might get caught being wrong and guilty of a crime yourself.
